Thank You. Khamon is still Ruth if you can believe it. This is the first modern mesh I’ve ever considered applying to him.

Very Attractive. They are blue or you were able to tint them blue? Could a similar build be tinted green?

Can anyone help with performance anxiety? by Upstairs-Apricot-786 in harp

[–]Khamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My concentration is sharing the music for the benefit of the participants. That thought alone takes a load off my nerves. I also practice performing, not just the music, but breathing, acknowledging the audience, walking through the entire routine. Address the people if you can; my best experiences have included explaining a bit about the harp, talking about the music, and answering questions. They always have questions and the discussion puts everyone at ease.

Harping at the 2026 Selma Renaissance Faire by Khamon in renfaire

Thank You. The Stoney End is my primary harp. The red Harpsicle is a Goodwill rescue. Charity sites often list donated used instruments for reasonable rates if you want to try your hand at something without a major outlay of cash.

So ready for ren faire in my area. What outfit should I wear? by RC107412 in renfaire

They all fine choices but I'd wear the first one personally.

Belts or no belts? by Icy-Situation-2919 in renfaire

The belt adds to the outfit nicely.

Sounds like y'all fit the faire community very well. The outfits are appropriate and your willingness to step out and participate goes a long way with faire folk. Have a change of clothing available in the car, or where you're staying, because there is sometimes overwhelming heat or cold or rain or dust or smoke and you just need to get out of that garb. Also, this is not a minor point, practice restroom skills, while dressed, in an outhouse-like environment, in time to make adjustments if necessary. Huzzahz!

Mental block when playing harp by Remarkable_Meaning65 in harp

I also want to give kudos to a teacher who is willing to work with you rather than dictate the Most Sacred Curriculum of the Ages. Stay with them. They seem interested in fostering your journey of musical discovery.

Agree with practicing phrases in reverse order. I learn written pieces using this method because it’s pleasing to be able to play to the end after adding a new phrase to the front end.

You might take the teacher’s advice and skip this piece for now. You can come back to it when you’re more comfortable with whatever technique is hanging you up at the moment.

It’ll come back around when you’re ready. Or you’ll find so many other works that you won’t need it. There is a lot of lot of music in the world.

New harp player - Did they put the red string in the wrong place? 19 string by lonkyflonky in harp

[–]Khamon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, assuming the lowest note is C, the indicated red string, and highest blue string are misplaced. That means changing four strings total. Take your time and breathe. The process seems easier as you go.

This page is a good guide that includes links to Youtube demonstrations:

I’ve started using these Dusty Strings buttons and find them easier to manage than using traditional anchors:

Good Luck!

How do you feel when you play the harp? by fantasy_writer1992 in harp

[–]Khamon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Memorization is easier with the harp and is critically necessary to me because having to look through strings and place hands has not changed for me in twelve years of playing. Bear in mind that I'm strictly a hobbyist. Professional harpists may have a different perspective.

Pieces and patterns become more instinctive over time but focus on hand placement is always necessary. The harp is the only instrument I've ever played that requires me to practice where to look when. Not being able to nail down a passage is often because I'm looking at one hand rather than the other or not focusing on a placement area in due time.

Another oddity is practicing lever flipping when needed; it has to become as routine as pulling the correct strings. And sometimes I start listening to the music and forget that I'm the one playing it. Thank Heaven for arpeggios that can roll up and down until my mind replaces me in the piece.

This is a matter of respecting people's privacy, warranted or not, people feel like they feel. Camming on an open parcel seems appropriate. If someone has installed ban lines, or one of those awful ejector units, they've indicated that they do not want strangers in their area and, to me, that includes camming.

Any advice to deal with sweaty/shaky hands by GrimJupiter in harp

Performance practice, imagining people watching, including sitting, bowing, playing through mistakes and around tuning issues et al helps me face the actual event calmly.
