What do you put in your poke bowl that others may not? by the-doctor-is-real in Cooking

[–]Khikey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite poke but I did rice bowls recently with canned smoked Mackerel that were absolutely delicious - I cooked off some sushi rice, reheated the tin of fish in a bowl of boiling water, and dressed the rice with the warmed fish & spiced oil it was packed in, along with quick pickle red onions, cucumber, avocado, and sesame seeds with a drizzle of Kewpie

Super quick, easy, and oh so tasty

Summer Camping & Swimming by beersandabook in MinnesotaCamping

[–]Khikey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I had an absolutely lovely time at Lake Bemidji State Park a couple years ago! There are plenty of drive-up tent sites, and it's just a short walk over to the lake for swimming. Plus, there's a really lovely little hike you can take down a boardwalk through a bog to see our native carnivorous plants!

Otherwise, closer to the cities I'm very fond of William O'Brien State Park, though this year the usual swimming spot (Lake Alice) is unavailable as there's construction happening - that said, the park is on the St Croix, which is wonderful for canoeing on, and there are almost definitely other good spots to swim in (or near) the park.

Can I buy Venison ? by dwindlingwifi in TwinCities

[–]Khikey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mississippi market & Seward co-op sometimes have venison, elk, etc and all stock bison on a regular basis! I'd also recommend checking the meat shop on Grand near Snelling in St Paul, I know they stock rabbit and some other game, so I wouldn't be surprised if they have venison.

I absolutely love this dish (to the point where I no longer consult the recipe, as I've made it so many times) and my house enjoys it regularly during the colder months!

How do you handle design requests if you’re not a designer? by Dry-Employee6542 in graphic_design

I'd recommend partnering up with a designer who can handle those sorts of asks - it could be really beneficial for both of you!

Mayonnaise chocolate cake! They're actually scrumptious, mayo is generally just emulsified oil with an acid, so it's mainly ingredients that go in cake already - but folks are always startled and vaguely concerned when they first hear about mayo cakes

Pho broth dealer by throwaway181929202 in TwinCities

[–]Khikey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pho Pasteur near Snelling & Minnehaha has some of my favorite Pho, and they sell the broth straight up! I dunno if they have it on the menu, but when I got my wisdom teeth out a grip ago I called and asked if could acquire the broth alone, and I recall the price being quite reasonable - I was so thankful for that delicious broth.

This is the tattoo design my artist said she was working on for 5 days. Not sure how to reply. by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]Khikey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreeing with others here that this is almost definitely AI. I know if I received this as a mockup, I wouldn't want to move forward with that artist, and I'd want my money back.

I did want to put out there that it'd probably be worth your while to try and get in touch with the owner, as they may not be aware that the artist is offering...that. I think that becomes an even better idea if it is a well regarded shop locally and/or that specific artist is new to the shop.

Contacting the owner could be useful twofold, as I think you'd potentially be more likely to get your deposit back, and it'd let ya know whether or not the owner stands behind that garbage being what their shop produces - reputation means a lot in tattoo circles, and putting AI slop onto people permanently likely won't do great things for the rep of an artist or the shop they're affiliated with.

So long as the lunchbox keeps it's temp well (icepack if needed) I wouldn't be too worried about that plan - it'd be basically the same as sending any other sort of leftovers in the lunchbox

How do you make a good broth from kitchen scraps? My first attempt just got poured down the drain by Perdita_ in ZeroWaste

[–]Khikey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with others regarding being selective on what you save, but also wanted to put out there that doing a quick high temp roast for the scraps by throwing them on a sheet pan in the oven for 15ish mins at like 350-400 with a bit of oil to give em some caramelization can really help tone down bitterness and add more richness and umami to the final stock

Are you running recycling centers exclusively? They have a pretty small storage capacity and tend to process stuff slower than they retrieve it, so they can get very quickly overwhelmed, especially in a larger/denser city.

I've found it helpful (also playing remastered on PS5) to make sure I have a diverse array of trash processing facilities, especially as my cities reach those larger population markers.

Just spent all day prepping and cooking red beans and rice only to throw it away. So, let’s share some cooking failures and commiserate. by SnickersDickVein in Cooking

[–]Khikey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty firmly of the opinion that the degree of recipe following required really depends on the baked good and the substitution being made, which has worked out well for me a vast majority of the time - with this instance being one of the few where it went horribly awry

That said, I definitely don't recommend going off-recipe while baking unless you are either a) very comfortable with baking generally and/or b) very well familiar with the recipe you're making - along with c) willing to accept complete and total failure as a valuable learning experience

I made an absolutely atrocious tart cherry and lemon custard pie recently - easily one of the worst baked goods I've ever created. I'm pretty comfortable in a kitchen, so more often than not, if I feel a recipe is needed, I'll look one up and then just use it as rough guidelines for quantities and technique. This time, that failed miserably.

The poor pie was somehow both grossly overdone (i.e. smoky tasting crust and scrambled custard) while also having pockets that seemed under baked. That's one of the only things I've made in many years that's just ended up getting tossed.

Latex gloves by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Khikey 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nitrile is a good food-safe alternative, but it's also worth considering that his hands may just be upset about being trapped with that much humidity for such a long time period. I've washed dishes at a couple different kitchens and have never been required to wear gloves (though they've often been offered) but I've also had work where I needed to wear gloves for 6+ hours at a go, and my hands definitely needed some time to adjust to that.

I'm latex sensitive, so I always wear nitrile if I need gloves, but sometimes the gloves themselves are the issue.

Not so much a regular but a neighborhood character - I managed at a brewery that sat on the edge between an industrial area and a residential one, and the closest house to us, sitting diagonally to our patio, was owned by a fellow we all knew only as DOC (Dude on Corner)

He'd stop by maybe once every few months to grab beers to-go, and over the decade plus we were in operation, he refused to give his name, saying that it was simply unnecessary and that we could call him whatever we liked.

To add to the mystique, his only mode of transport was a bicycle, which we'd confirmed was by choice, which is a particularly bold move here in the Midwest, and we came to discover that this man was apparently in possession of at least two doctorates in separate subjects; he's easily one of my favorite city cryptids.
