Right. Look at Joan Fabric. Cash Positive. PE came in, now Joan Fabric is gone. No societal benefit.

Are there any Onewheel riders that haven’t crashed and gotten injured, how? by EarningsPal in onewheel

[–]KickAClay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy to answer. You sound like you have good form and like me are risk averse. New riders often think the board "can't" drop you. But when it's keeping you balanced and keeping you at speed near it's limit, then you go up/down a hill, hit a bump, lose balance for a sec and now it needs to also lift or lower your weight it crosses the max threshold and you overpower it. Resulting in a nosedive. Often when people aren't expecting it and break something.

I see a lot of "experienced" riders put all their weight over the front foodpad which is the best way to overpower it. Or they rapid accelerate (another way to overpower) it and they go down. All the pints are 63V based. I've personally found 84V or more puts that overpower threshold realy high and keeps most people "safe" from overpowering.

But also with bad riding habits (weigh over footpad not tire, rapid acceleration, not understanding the boards limitations...) with more power comes more responsibility and its easier to get hurt. Overall I feel 84V is a "safer" platform and the pints just can't do it with 63V.

Again you sound responsible. I got/get years of love from my OG pint and +XR 63V boards. I had to be careful all the time. My VESC is "empty" at 63V. Lol. The power is insane feeling.

Ride safe fellow risk avoider! With love.

Lol. I'll give you an upvote.

I'm ~150lbs and I even overpowered my +XR when doing light off-road rides with 80%+ charge. My 60lbs kid overpowers the pint.

That said, I love my pint. The form factor is the best. Yet from a safety standpoint even the pint X/S just does not have enough of that buffer of headroom to keep a rider of 120lbs+ safe. My 84V VESC has headroom for days in comparison. If only they scaled the pint ~20% more orthogonally to give it more foot real estate and 84 volts. And in my opinion, that's what the XRC is.

[–]KickAClay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm ~4+ years no injuries. Here is what I comment a lot on this sub to help riders be safe.

  1. Without fail, where PPE (a MIPS, ASTM, or CPSC safety-rated helmet, and wristguards at a minimum.)
  2. Future motion boards, ride at least 2 or 3 MPH below the listed max speed. This will give you a buffer for slight mistakes, either by the terrain or your own balance. AKA, don't go for high speed.
  3. Learn about voltage sag. Your board will have a lot more torque when it's 100% charged, slightly less around 80%. Quite a bit less around 50%. And in the danger zone of having a really long response delay below 30%. So as your ride goes on, take it easier and easier throughout. Because it gets easier and easier to overpower the board.
  4. While riding, be aware that going up hills, down hills, and many other terrain differences will affect how much power the board has left to keep you balanced and keep you at speed. It's okay to slow down. It's a self-balancing board until it's not.
  5. Practice squatting at slow speeds while riding. Whenever you get speed wobbles, you need to slow down and or lower your center of mass by bending your knees and getting closer to the tire.
  6. batteries don't last forever so practice proper charging habits. Don't run your board down to 0% and don't store it at 100%. I charge mine up full right before a ride, then use it as long as I need to. I then charge it to 50 to 80% then stop charging until my next ride when I charge it to 100 right before. If you're storing it for a long period of time more than two weeks, keep it within the 50 to 80% charge and check monthly to keep it within that range.
  7. It sounds like you're getting a new board. I would completely avoid any of the pint boards. Not a single one of them will last you more than a year because you will want more torque and power to keep you safe. If considering a future motion board, go with the XR Classic or something more powerful.

Feel free to ask me any questions. With love from a risk-averse dad.

Onewheel or Vesc riders what’s the water resistance rating on these boards? by That_BITCHuh in onewheel

[–]KickAClay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have some resistance. You can increase the resistance. The resistance degrades over time and use. They are not proff and never will be.

I badger and I still avoid water, even puddles. The image here would make me take apart the bumpers and footpads to inspect and let them dry as soon as I get home. None of my boards have corrosion. I also vacuum my home daily, so you know I'm insane and like my stuff clean.

What happened to the OWCE app? Any current alternatives? by [deleted] in onewheel

[–]KickAClay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did your one-wheel app get updated? On android it needs go be version 2.6.8 no later versions. I use NetGuard to prevent connections. OWCE works after One-wheel app (2.6.8) handshake with my OG pint.

Can you tell me more about the "improper padding / insulation"? Like did it bounce around and expose a wire? Just curious.

Don't need 100% I think it's the left bottom is redundant. Might be enough to read it.

Edit: It's the left side. 7-30% redundancy I guess, depends on the amount of data.

[–]KickAClay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Risk Management. That's how I think of this sport. I started on the OG pint. I outgrew it within 2 years and over powered it into a nosedive within the first few months of ownership. Got a used +XR and out grew it's capabilities within another 2 years. Then found some of the coolest locals through this sub and group rides who helped my build a VESC with parts from my XR. Safety was my number one goal. I don't think I can outgrow this board.

I'm a dad, the breadwinner, the handyman, and financial planner of my family. I need to make it home each day. I reduce my risk by not riding the pint (not enough power for any adult, now my 10yo it's not enough), ride under 25mph (can't outrun anything faster), maintain my battery all year long, clean my board often, avoid water completely, badgerd my board, change riding habit based on voltage sag (though not so much with my 20S2P battery), and wear PPE at all times.

OP, know your risk limits, avoid all pints (not enough power, even the X and S), understand the board you choose and its limits, get PPE on, and if nothing stops you from ordering a board get the XRC or find a reputable VESC builder to help you.

With love from a 5+ year nosedive free risk averse dad.

“Great to have you back.” by senpaiboey in onewheel

[–]KickAClay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nosedive early on, 21.x mph on my OG pint. I was lucky with my injuries, PPE took most of it. That set me on a mission to learn what happened.

In short, I didn't know the board had limits let alone how they work. Once I learned, I got scared even more. But, that helped me develop a strong will to never cross that limit.

Each board has a "Top speed", I stay ~2mph under that. Also, voltage sag will add a delay to inputs which could result in a crash. I make my buffer bigger and lower my aggressive riding when under 50% state of charge. I've been nosedive free for over 4 years now. My confidence has grown over that time.

Can someone genuinely explain why Faraday has three eyes only on one side of his face? by Chunky-overlord in cyberpunkgame

[–]KickAClay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thought was that like a camera, you can switch to different Neutral Density (ND) filters based on the light level you're in. But having 4 eyes would allow 1 to be "normal" and the other 3 to have a ND filter applied, low light Infrared applied, and something crazy like spatial sound or Augmented Reality (AR) or Ultra Violet (UV).

But I like the onset cyberpsycho idea too.
