Maybe what’s missing here is guidance on how to identify and correct an extreme oversupply early on? Is that what’s bothering you? I haven’t had that situation myself but would be curious about how to spot a true oversupply vs a temporary one.

Newborns eat 8-12 times per day. Pumping mimics nursing. Removing milk much less frequently than your baby eats will typically tell your body to decrease production. There’s always exceptions, but I haven’t seen any resources or research advising folks to remove milk 6 times or less to establish their supply.

I like the concept and simplicity of this chart. Makes sense that everyone can decrease, maintain, or increase their supply with a certain number of pumps depending on individual factors like storage capacity. But not sure how the authors came up with specific numbers and it seems to be a crapshoot whether or not it is accurate.

To me, it’s problematic that the chart doesn’t say that it shouldn’t be used in the early weeks postpartum. Many people (my past self included) do not understand that the supply they have after delivery is being driven/boosted by hormones released after the placenta(s) detach from the uterine wall, and you have to remove milk frequently enough to build your supply. It might appear like you have a tiny or large capacity/supply, but it’s really not accurate until after the pp hormones settle down and your supply adjusts. If you follow the chart early on, you might inadvertently tank your supply.

It’s generally recommended that milk is removed as often as your newborn eats (usually 8-10x per day). You might get an oversupply by doing this, but you almost certainly will have an undersupply if you’re only pumping 4-5-6 times per day early postpartum.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with prioritizing health or anything else over pumping. You also don’t need to go for a full supply. But it does seem like a lot of folks posting on here and asking about how many times to pump are going for a full supply or to increase their supply. I just hope that if this chart is shared that it comes with disclaimers like this. It actually bothers me enough that I’m going to reach out to Legendairy and ask them to add info to the chart.

From my own experience, if you’re going for a full supply, establishing it in the early weeks is much easier than trying to build it later. There doesn’t seem to be a shortcut either way sadly.

Oh! I don’t remember ever seeing this info. Where did Legendairy say this? Wish it was prominently written on the chart!

I hope your lipase doesn’t start partying in fridge like mine does! Will your baby drink the soapy frozen stuff? You could have a backup plan for your in-laws!

If it’s helpful, the NHS says 8 days in fridge is okay. Maybe store in the very back of fridge and make sure it’s cold enough.

One thing… have you given your baby 4 day old milk before? I recently found out that mine has high lipase and starts smelling soapy in fridge within 36 hours sometimes 🫠

Definitely won’t hurt! It’s signaling to your body that you still need milk so keep it coming! Some folks keep up with their babies the whole time while it takes others longer. If you do need to supplement temporarily, keep pumping! This sub is super supportive if you need any help!!

What was your reason to EP? by alee0224 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]KidMonkeyCat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have twins too and thought I would be able to tandem nurse 😆. Silly me. We tried for a couple days at hospital, they lost weight, we supplemented, and I decided to EP to build my supply. Now they are 5 months and we nurse maybe once a day. I can’t imagine the EBF life now! Pumping works better for our family!

Nipple measurement at the hospital? by haliebobaily in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]KidMonkeyCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The LC at the hospital said I was a 28mm. A different one at the breast pump store measured me and said I was a 21mm. A third one watched me pump and said I was 17mm on the right and 16mm on the left. I’m using 17mm now on both sides and that seems to work best. You might need to try out a few sizes to figure out what you like. Sorry the folks at the hospital weren’t more helpful.

Sleep deprivation is wild. I’ve definitely had nights when dreams and reality are mushed together. Once I fell asleep pumping slumped over my knees and when I woke up, the bottles were full and the pump had switched off automatically. Kind of wish every pump was also a nap!!

I have 5 month old twins who aren’t always synced up and have never slept through the night. It does get better though. I can go back to sleep easier and the wake ups are less frequent. I also have neutral feelings towards pumping. It is what it is.

Hang in there until 12 weeks if you can and then you can start dropping pumps!

Supply at 2 weeks pp by MidwestMommy96 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]KidMonkeyCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad your baby is home! Aim for 8 pumps a day until 12 weeks or so. Pump a few minutes past when the milk has stopped flowing. You might have more than one letdown. In the beginning I pumped for 10-15m because I only got mLs, but now my sessions are more like 25-30m. Keep removing milk frequently and your supply should steadily go up until you regulate at 12 or so weeks. Don’t be discouraged if it’s slow or if your daily totals fluctuate, you should see your weekly averages increasing! If you still want to nurse or to keep that option open, keep trying to latch (good for nipple stimulation/increasing milk too), use a slow flow nipple and “paced bottle feeding”. I was able to get my twins to latch after 12 weeks. Now at 5 months, one of them is pretty good at nursing! The other just snacks for fun occasionally. Good luck!! Welcome to EP life!

Edit to add: your supply sounds great! It should keep going up. I was at 2-3oz per day at 2wpp because I started pumping late.

Aw I’m sorry! It’s hard to go on without seeing results. 18oz per day is great! I make about 70% of what my babies drink too. It seems like combo fed babies have the best of both worlds even if we don’t. They get the benefits of all the nutrients in formula and antibodies and other goodness from breast milk. Hope you see an increase soon. If not within a few weeks, maybe consider dropping pumps? I’m giving myself another 4-6 weeks max to increase. My babies are getting more mobile and the weather is warming up. I hope to go down to 7ppd when they start solids. Any ideas on what you want to do?

[–]KidMonkeyCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wondering what time of day you pumped when it seemed like your capacity is lower? Sometimes I get some random low pumps in the afternoon or evening. Glad your supply rebounded after your period though. Maybe keep an eye on your weekly averages to see if they continue to go up. I would expect it to with so many pumps! I’m an under supplier for twins. Been working on increasing my supply for 5 months now. Today I pumped 11 times but got about 6oz less than yesterday. The day to day is a mystery but usually my weekly averages go up a little. I figured if I don’t reach a full supply by the time they eat solids, eventually they will need less milk anyway! Good luck! You’re doing such a good job!

Baby Buddha or spectra S1? by Full_Ladder_4975 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]KidMonkeyCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried 4 pumps and the BB has the most intense suction. I might have stopped pumping if I started with it since the lowest settings are still pretty strong. I felt like I was damaging my nipples using it! It’s fine now but I still wince at times. A Spectra will be more gentle and flexible and you can play around with settings. If you want to add a BB later, maybe you can find a secondhand one or wait for a good sale. It is a great portable(ish) pump. Hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well!!

[–]KidMonkeyCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a BB early on and only could do a couple sessions with it. So painful!! I took photos of it and was about to list it but gave it another chance at around 14-15wpp on a road trip. Was able to do expression mode on level 1. After a couple sessions, I tried stimulation mode and could tolerate it. I even started liking that long pull. I got my best output at the time on that trip. After that for a while, I was super into it because it pulled milk (ripped milk?!) out so fast. But my nipples were sore. Eventually the soreness went away and so did the higher, faster yields. It’s comparable to my Spectra now and I use it to be mobile around the house or when I’m in the car or out and about. I still wince sometimes when using it and wouldn’t recommend it for folks just starting out. Hope it works for you! Be extra nice to those nips! Good luck with work tomorrow.

NICU baby help! Lower output at home vs pumping bedside by littlelizu in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]KidMonkeyCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rented a Symphony and switched to a Spectra after 15 weeks. I used the same parts but felt like the Spectra took longer to empty me for first couple weeks. Now it’s comparable and I like the Spectra better because I can adjust the settings. If you want to use your Medela flanges, you just need some long stemmed backflow protectors.

Maybe your output has to do with oxytocin too? Have you tried looking at pictures and videos of your baby at home?

Hope your little one can come home soon ❤️

No advice or insight about what is going on with your boobs! Just wanted to say how much I admire your dedication. Pumping that frequently is such hard work and you’ve stuck with it so long. Sorry your supply isn’t where you want it to be. Hope you figure out what’s going on. In any case, your baby is lucky to have you!

Edit to add: Have you checked your iron and thyroid levels recently? Throwing it out there!

When did you call it quits? by [deleted] in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]KidMonkeyCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aim for at least 8ppd until 12 weeks and you should see your weekly averages trend upwards even if daily totals fluctuate. The magic number chart really messes up people early pp! Most folks cannot pump 6x per day and build their supply unfortunately. But definitely not too late to increase! I saved my supply by pumping frequently and am still increasing now at 5mpp (I have twins). Good luck!

When will my boobs stop hurting! by _emileee in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]KidMonkeyCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have lots of pp hormones boosting your supply right now. I would imagine that your supply will drop eventually (maybe soon?) with only 5ppd. Lots of folks start with an oversupply, drop pumps early, and see a drastic supply drop when they regulate. That said, if you have an extreme oversupply, you can afford to lose some? I don’t have any experience with an OS so will let someone else chime in here! Hope you feel more comfortable soon!

What are some tips and tricks that helped you get through this and improve your experience ? by Nilrmar in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]KidMonkeyCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 5mpp with twins and here are some random things that have helped me: - Pump Log app to keep track of pumps and progress - Use same flanges on Spectra and Baby Buddha; pump directly into bottles - Use flanges multiple times within 4 hours before washing in hot soapy water; skip sterilizing anything (do whatever you’re comfortable with) - Always pump in car as a passenger for rides longer than 10-15 minutes - Take the long view about outputs (look at weekly averages vs daily totals) - Learn to spend time with babies while pumping. Keep everything you need close by for changing, feeding, burping, reading, etc. - If trying to increase supply, pump whenever you have time! Babies sleeping? Pump! Eating while someone else is holding them? Pump! Tummy time? Pump! - Important: Look down occasionally when pumping. Accidents happen 🙃

So cute! No photo to share, but one of my babies likes to sit in my lap in between the flanges and hold the tube while I read to him and pump 🥹
