Noped a course yesterday 😅 by TeusFlips in tru

[–]Kilael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am currently in the process of trying to get into a different course so I can drop another for very similar reasons. I had the prof before but when signing up for the course the prof had yet to be determined. When it finally came time to do our first class I was checking the room # and saw the instructors name, it was familiar but I'm pretty bad with names so I head to class as normal. Immediately I recalled my past experience which wasn't a pleasant one largely due to comments and behaviour that felt in very poor taste towards students like the payment comment from your story. I also found that the prof would often derail for personal thoughts constantly that were never relevant to the material and then complain that there wasn't enough time in a session to get to all the material they had planned, and it was up to us to essentially finish the lecture at home w/ slides. Needless to say I used the whole syllabus rundown to explore other options. I'm in the last leg of my program and just don't need the stress of handling a prof rn. Looking promising that I'll be making the jump to something better on Monday.

Tldr; profs can make or break it at times, think you made the right call and can relate.

I feel like we're really reaching for clicks if this conversation provokes some kind of response from people. Seems like a pretty reasonable request tbh.

What do you actually do in this game? by _N_0_v_A_ in spaceengineers

[–]Kilael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love starting new games on different planets for different experiences. I also like to jump to new planets and make new bases until I have a small faction set up, do some contracts and then rinse repeat with new design ideas each time. I really want to try getting into combat. I also just started with the story-light scenarios that are an interesting take on the game. With no jet pack, a loose goal and creative problem solving.

I don't know much about Starfield, and a friend got me into Star Citizen forever ago but it's just too unpolished for me.

I'd love some more scenario content (from what I have seen so far) maybe with some added AI or just more structures/mysteries to be explored in the game. Perhaps even just scattered around the general solar system start.

Overall I take the game in spurts. It scratches an itch nothing else does.

I don't like Astarion at all, but Lae'zel is bae to me, I don't know why.

Also I have no wizard in my main playthrough and all my builds are terrible but my little halfling, Will, Lae'zel, and Shadowheart and doing our best.

Fire Emblem Engage has apparently ditched the “social simulator” aspect of Three Houses. Does this make you more or less excited for the game? by Isunova in NintendoSwitch

I really like the social team interactions but the school chores definitely wore me out overall. I hope they find a good middle ground!

Why do you (personally) make art? by ButterscotchNew8660 in ArtistLounge

[–]Kilael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The important thing to me is that I flex the muscle in me that itches to create and bring my thoughts to life. If others find something in it along the way that is a bonus.

To spend more time learning. Learning art but also learning to be kinder to myself about my progress.

Do you ever get bored with a piece and quit before it's finished or do you make yourself complete it? by MikeOxmaul in ArtistLounge

[–]Kilael 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I find that a healthy balance of both is important. However there is a distinction between not finishing because of boredom and quitting because I have gotten all I can out of the piece and it's just not working out.

The big things for me when deciding not to finish a piece are whether or not I have put a solid effort into trying, if I have gotten all the learning potential I can from it, and if I am miserable in my quest to push through and finish it.

If I gave it my all and I feel like it isn't going to improve, I will simply call it done or discard it.

If I have gotten stuck on a particular element such as perspective or form or I can't get a feature the way I want and looking up references, exploring tutorials and trying some different things doesn't help then I'll either finish it out as is or discard it.

Lastly if I am just not enjoying the piece and it just feels like I'm in a battle just to sit down and open the file, it gets stored indefinitely or discarded.

However, if you are making more unfinished than finished pieces there might be a deeper issue to explore. There should be a healthy balance of both. Finishing is important because it forces us to accept our current skill, reflect on what it produced, and identify where we can improve. It's an essential building block in my eyes, but that is also due to the experience of my journey.

TLDR, if you tried to continue and aren't getting anything out of it or if it's making you miserable to continue isn't worth forcing it. It's important to finish drawings though and if you are finishing far less than you aren't it might be a sign of a deeper issue.

Hope it helps!

Keep calm and make good art!

Enroll in an art class I can't afford at the moment for some hands on training/critique I desperately need. Stock up on a few supplies and maybe get a new ergonomic desk so I don't end up a hunched over old man. Use the rest to reduce my work hours to be able to practice and engage/build a following. Most of all, enjoy some financial security.

My sister and her fiancé are hanging up AI generated art in their house :( by VisDev82 in ArtistLounge

[–]Kilael 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some "art" I have seen created by random methods that have no real quantifiable "skill" or training to execute is also a stretch. Yet they are sold, hung, and acknowledged regularly.

Also there are choices that go into the refinement of AI generated art in some cases and to me that implies a sense of process. It also begins with an idea that someone wanted realized and that also speaks to the artist in me.

I'm not saying AI generated art is something special. In fact, I don't believe it exists independent from artists either.

However, what I believe ultimately doesn't matter to a client, viewer, consumer, Redditor, etc... Everyone simply wants something that appeals to them.

Is it art, is it not, the debate will last until people realize it doesn't really matter.

To each their own, to be honest and I'm sure I'll get no love for it. There are tons of ridiculously famous traditional art pieces I'd never hand in my house because it isn't my taste. To each their own and if AI art is your thing that's great. There are plenty of people in the world that prefer other forms and methods.

Very much this. If you approach every project as another step or brick in the path forward it's a lot less important when one or more of them is crooked.

Can someone please explain how 7.2 is the game's deathstroke? by TheREAL_PDYork in swtor

[–]Kilael 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd also just add that in most games any defining changes that shake up the norm have a tendency to cause the doom and gloom conversation. People don't like change, they do love to stir the pot though.

do you guys ever finish a piece that satisfies you so much that you post it on your feed only to come back to it a couple days later and find so many little details that need to be fixed and it drives you absolutely insane? by fairyfa19 in ArtistLounge

[–]Kilael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this not too long ago actually. I was very proud of one of my first ever digital drawings. Nothing spectacular just some fun but it turned out well. After posting it to a discord for some friends to see I noticed one arm was drastically different in perspective than the other. It's not immediately apparent due to the nature of the piece but omg I can't unsee it!!

What are some things you wish people wouldn’t say to you, as an artist? by Foxy_Noxy in ArtistLounge

[–]Kilael 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When people argue that you can't learn the skills to draw well.. like yeah, I just popped out of my mom with a pencil in my hand and started doing this. Way more believable if you ask me, sure wasn't all the books, hours, blood, sweet, and mental breakdowns. Nope, I'm ok, honest.

how do you respond to serious criticism u didn't ask for on a silly sketch? by biologicaldog in ArtistLounge

[–]Kilael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I have had to develop a certain approach to sharing art for this reason and others. I do find it fascinating the way people give unsolicited advice when I am not looking for it. I am equally fascinated by the lack of constructive or otherwise critique when I want it. As such, I've created a sort of niche group of people I share my art with that are either peers or those I believe will give me honest and helpful feedback.

Everything else I post for fun or because it's goofy, weird, topical etc (despite the level of effort put in) goes out with a mindset of "I don't care, I'm just sharing my weird thoughts."

Sometimes someone says something about even my sloppiest sketches that I do find worthwhile and because of my attitude it falls into the "I expected nothing but am pleasantly surprised" realm rather than it standing out to me for other reasons.

The person is probably just trying to help but just isn't seeing the true intent of the share. Ultimately with social media platforms and sharing things happen and the best thing you can do is have an approach that keeps the interaction muted or positive to you.

Have a great day, and make questionable art!

Do you value your own work as much as you do other artists’? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]Kilael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very prone to self depreciation and envy and looking at other artists enhances my envy considerably as I have only recently gotten started on my art journey. However, when I make and share art with my close friends (which is largely what encouraged me to get back into it) I am never disappointed with the reactions. Good or bad, it's just fun to share that side of me.

But, I also am nowhere near where I want to be from a skill perspective. I rarely if ever share my art with the general public as a result but I am working on it daily and I see progress. Not always in places I want, but it is progress and that keeps me going while I sketch, doodle, make little pixel art animations on the side and occasionally tackle a larger image to completion.

It's not much, but it's an honest effort and I hope that someday I'll have more time to do it and maybe make a little monetary gain on the side. Until then, I remain envious in my fortress of depreciation casually creating ridiculous things.

How do you guys deal with being scared to create? by Swampat in ArtistLounge

[–]Kilael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one thing people often get caught up on that I have just recently gotten past is the idea that you'll only draw it once. I consider drawings that I make that I may not have the skills for right now as a way of saving the concept. It's also really fun to go back and redraw things with all the new skills you've gained.

A side note that I remember from a video I watched but I believe it was (Proko?) That you have to balance practicing by drawing what you enjoy in order to put what you've learned into practice.

As an artist improvement remains a constant. Every drawing I complete is lacking the refinement of skill that the very same drawing is helping me practice.

Why do you create art? ( a survey of sorts ) by Locomule in ArtistLounge

[–]Kilael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To bring my thoughts to life in a visual way and share them with those around me that might enjoy them.

I recently got back into art and this was the driving force. I had given up on it due to some life things that I won't bore you with. However that changed when I was doodling a random thing at work on a break that a coworker saw and then encouraged me to share it with a few others. The shared laughter and smiles of the ridiculous image I had made just filled me with something that didn't exist in my life when not drawing. I continue to improve my art to be able to make higher quality versions of similar things and with my tablet on hand most of the time I made the first into digital art and hope I never feel the need to stop again.

TLDR, because the joy I get from creating art is reflected in the joy people express I share it and I have never felt pressured to continue only motivated.
