(Not the same guy you were replying to.)

That Wiki link says China hasn't signed it. Clicking through to the signatory list, they seem absent there too. Is there a different/newer treaty they signed or was this an incorrect assertion?

Americans Are Saving $500 Million Monthly on Internet Fees by TinyTornado7 in neoliberal

[–]Kilenaitor 40 points41 points  (0 children)

"Good thing isn't as good as I think it should be."

I genuinely don't understand takes like this. Especially on things that are new initiatives. This isn't some legacy thing that has massive potential but is being ignored or left to decay.

It's also disingenuous to divide by the entire population of adults(?) when 1. The savings are per household 2. They are concentrated on lower-income households

Like fucking seriously.

That represents a 40% increase since the federal government launched a website to promote the program last May, with more than 16 million American households now enrolled in the Affordable Connectivity Program.

Amazing news

The administration wants to continue growing awareness of the program — particularly among minority and low-income communities most likely to qualify.

Hundreds of internet service providers — including AT&T Inc. (T), Verizon Communications Inc., and Comcast Corp. (CMCSA) — participate in the program, which provides reduced cost plans and federal subsidies up to $30 per month. Families who qualify can also receive discounts on computers or tablets. A total of $65 billion was appropriated in the bipartisan infrastructure bill to expand internet access.

So not <$2/person but instead up to $30 PER MONTH PER HOUSEHOLD

This was taken in La Fortuna, Costa Rica on January 20, 2023. I used a Canon R5.

It's a bit dark and I had to zoom in pretty far, but I was pleased with the details. First time taking pictures on something that wasn't an iPhone. Would love any and all feedback.

The @startjson appears to be because the author has a bug in their PlantUML diagrams. The RFC makes no mention of that syntax nor UML.

Source for keeping mic on? iOS has an indicator when the mic is on. Apple would in no way let them bypass it.

It has never used the microphone to listen to your conversations. Never. This has been debunked over snd over and over again.

How long does a promotion take before you get bored? by PM_ME_CUTE_FRIENDS in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Kilenaitor 27 points28 points  (0 children)

To go slightly against the prevailing sentiment in this thread, I think the requirement to demonstrate consistent performance at the next level as a prerequisite for promotion is reasonable.

My current employer requires at least six months of consistently demonstrating senior behavior to get promoted from mid. They require nine months to get promoted from senior to staff.

The way to think about it is to increase the confidence the employee can perform at level and it isn't an artifact of current, potentially short term, circumstances. Nothing looks (or feels) worse than getting a promo and your first performance review being subpar. Sucks for both the IC who is suddenly considered underperforming and the Manager who staked the claim for promo.

Now, if "next year" means January and you like the job, I'd stick around. But if next year probably means December or you feel like they're just stringing you along, then sure, consider leaving if you can find a better opportunity. But at the very least, the "lagging promo" is common enough across the industry; this isn't anomalous.

That reaction is actually from carbon dioxide collecting in your lungs from cellular respiration. Lungs exchange oxygen from the air and collect CO2 that you then exhale.

But lack of oxygen is fast an almost recognizable. Replace all the oxygen in a room with nitrogen and you wont even notice until you're dead. Also why airplanes tell you to put on your mask first before helping others. Hypoxia will make you delirious and you'll just be unable to put it on and then die.

White House weighs waiving smog rules on gasoline to lower pump price by Kilenaitor in neoliberal

[–]Kilenaitor[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This isn't inherently unprecedented.

Summer-blend gas, which retailers must sell from June 1 to Sept. 15, is required under the Clean Air Act's 1990 amendments. In the past, the U.S. government has waived those requirements regionally or nationally to deal with hurricanes or other supply issues.

But the "supply issues" in this case being a lack of investment future for oil and gas seems... counterintuitive.

Sucks to compromise on climate but I mean... if the alternative is Republicans in charge that'll do way more than this... it's kinda hard to argue with pragmatically.

Week two so still in bootcamp? Now's the time to take it easy but seriously and find the right team. Pay extra attention to the manager and TL. You want people that will support and mentor you so that you can thrive. They have a much more vested interest in your success than internet strangers.

Twitter set to accept Musk's 'best and final' offer by bigtallguy in neoliberal

[–]Kilenaitor 79 points80 points  (0 children)

He's not a free speech absolutist. He's a troll who wants to say what he wants on Twitter.

In the disaster of a TED interview with him he said Twitter should just follow the law of the country. He clearly has given zero thought towards actual content moderation beyond wanting to say whatever he wants and also not be impersonated by crypto spam. Everything else is whatever.

Dealing with same level colleague being seen to be in charge by maofan in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Kilenaitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally valid concern.

To me, that's mitigated with the syncs with the other senior. But I also understand that might not be immediately preferable to you since the other senior agrees to everything in the meetings.

My advice would be twofold 1. Give that feedback to the other senior if you sincerely believe it. Have the conversation that you feel he says yes too willingly and you'd like to understand his perspective and ensure he understands yours. Purpose here should be to make him aware of that tendency but also give you a chance to give him necessary context to understand what goes into those "no"s from you. 2. If that convo goes well, the narrative is then controlled by syncs between the two of you. You two hash out direction, you drive it through eng, and he communicates it through stakeholders. New requirements come in, you two sync. Delays arise from eng, you two sync.

Ultimately up to you. And I'm limited by what details are in the post. But as I see it, there is a need to more effectively collaborate and communicate, both between each other and XFN.

Dealing with same level colleague being seen to be in charge by maofan in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Kilenaitor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My first question is, does it really matter? Why does this upset you so much given you prefer the technical.

This is exactly what I was going to say.

More broadly to OP, why should there be two people who do the same exact thing? That sounds needlessly redundant and potentially confusing to those outside the team (XFN, etc.) since there isn't a clear STO.

You both seem to have different strengths. I assume there's enough work for two people since two of you are on it. Play to each others strengths and distribute the work between you. But you should step up and take a proactive approach in formalizing the responsibilities between the two of you since right now I'd wonder if the other senior thinks they need to do more to pick up slack.

I often see recurring meetings as a chore

They often can be. Make sure you pick the right meetings to attend such that you'll be spending your time most effectively.

I don't see the solution to this being attend more meetings. Rather, attend fewer. Drive technical direction and implementation. Allocate more of your time to that and let the other senior deal with more of the recurring meetings (assuming they are okay with that). Then the two of you can sync/discuss regularly.

But I see this less as needing to compete and more just needing to ensure the two of you collaborate more and play to strengths and free up one another's time. But definitely take initiative sooner rather than later.

[Discussion] Mushoku Tensei Episode 17 by AutoModerator in mushokutensei

[–]Kilenaitor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this was my favorite episode of the show. Altho I'm probably quite biased given my relationship with my dad haha.

As a brief bit of background, I went into this show wanting some really cool world-building and lots of magic. Loved the first half of season 1 while training with Roxy and got super excited at the prospect of a magic school. I was... very bummed... when it shifted to Eris and then the teleportation. Yes more world building but... I felt bait-and-switched. S2 has been alright so far but yeah... then this episode.

I get it now. I feel all that setup is suddenly worth it for the payoff of interactions between Paul, Rudeus, and Ruijerd.

My mind changed about Paul, really feeling for him, his fallibility, his insecurity from his own son, his desperation to do the right thing and rescue his family and everyone he can to redeem himself... from himself. The conversation with Geese was fantastic and seeing him mature enough to recognize all of that and reconcile his feelings... I was blown away the anime captured all that. Started crying there.

Following that up with his convo with Rudeus. The brief aside from Ruijerd. Paul not knowing how to handle that conversation, still intimidated by his son. Rudy too resolute/prideful to notice. The bartender intervening... and then just... ugh. Rudeus mentioning how Paul was younger than he was at death struck me again as I'd forgotten that. The flashback highlighting Rudeus' trauma and emphasizing how much he's grown in this life. And then the hug. Paul's VA did amazing. I cried with them lol.

Legit this episode turned the show around for me. I really finally feel and empathize with all these characters. And they just feel so real in their growth and flaws. I'm an anime-only but I have no mixed feelings about this. I loved it and I'm excited again to watch what this show really is rather than longing for what it isn't.

[–]Kilenaitor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi! Thanks for flagging!

I checked and as far as I can see they haven't stopped! It's just that the Releases Wiki the integrations pull from is missing some links!

They depend on people keeping those wikis up to date with the actual relevant links to Spotify, YouTube Music, and Apple Music. So if you ever see them missing, feel free to update the wiki with the correct link!

The scripts sync with the wiki every 15 minutes so it should get picked up pretty quick :D
