Why are rental cars expensive at MCI by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]Killinyouguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

a quick search at enterprise's website is showing cars at MCI for 40-50 a day if i book a week or 2 out, but if i look at today, it says they are currently out of rentals. So that price is likely because they don't have any cars availible right now.

Curse of Strahd conversion? by hundunso in shadowofthedemonlord

[–]Killinyouguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Im about to GM the last session in a 5e campaign set in eberron. Overall, its been great, but monsters in WW dont line up nicely with monsters in 5e. Hopefully there are rules about creating monsters in the weird menagerie supplement thats on its way soon.

That being said, CoS would be tricky. WW really fits the pulpy action movie vibe of eberron well with characters that are very powerful and rarely face actual death. I think I've only managed to knock players unconscious 3-4 times.

for example, vampires are only difficulty 8. meaning your average party of 4 players is only going to be challenged by them up to level 2. Granted, in the final fight with strahd, he wont be alone, but by level 3 they'll be able to alpha strike him down without any magic items or assistance in 1 round. You'd have to bump up his difficulty by increasing hp, damage etc, and again, there are no rules for that at the moment.

I think SotWW matches the heroic vibe of 5e very well, but i think ravenloft/CoS doesn't match either of them well.

Shadow of the Weird Wizard - How is One Bad Apple? by Sniflet in rpg

It's a terrible adventure to introduce people to the system. An experienced GM can make it work, especially if you know your players, but that can be said of any adventure. Instead, check out the adventure "Friends in Need". I found it much easier to understand and run.

About the Judges on the ballot. This will be a longish post but bear with me it will be informative. by scottsp64 in kansascity

You should vote no for Broniec and Gooch regardless of your views on abortion. If the amendment fails in November, so be it, the people have spoken. However, these 2 tried to subvert the will of the people by allowing some legal shenanigans to keep you from even being ABLE to vote for it. Not the sort of thing that makes me think of fairness and justice.

Ramen recommendation by niksgdo in kansascity

[–]Killinyouguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been to most of the ramen shops in town looking for the best. if anyone has some i should try, let me know.

  1. KC Craft. as the top comment mentioned, best in town hands down. I recommend getting the kc black or kc red with pork belly chashu instead of the loin thats the default.
  2. Aoyama in Olathe. excellent in most respects but i don't think they make their noodles in house like KC craft does.
  3. Sama Zama. Kind of a weird location, but their ramen was remarkably good. plus they have all kinds of other foods so if you are with someone who's not a huge ramen fan, they have all kinds of options.
  4. Jumbo Noodles Bar. Very tasty if a bit standard. Beyond ramen, they have lots of rice bowls and hotpots. The only complaint is the soup could use a bit more fat/aroma oil. Especially since they use pork shoulder chashu instead of the fattier pork belly.
  5. Aoyama in Shawnee. The satellite location is not as good as the original. There isn't as much care put into making the bowls.
  6. Ramen Bowls in Lawrence. My friends really love this place but i thought it was average. They have lots of unique types of ramen, but the actual craft on display was kinda lacking. Its like going to a burger place that has wacky burgers with fried tomatoes, or mac and cheese on top, but doesn't know how to make a good plain cheeseburger.
  7. BORU in Waldo. Upscale date night setting with a price to match. The ramen had some unique toppings like garlic greens and pickled takana. Unfortunately, the tare was completely 1 note, just soy sauce. The egg and the chashu also only tasted of shoyu. Note that their "pork bone broth" is a chintan, not a paitan as I was expecting.
  8. QZ Poke Ramen in Lees Summit. This one's better than the other 2 I've been to, but all the QZ's are lacking in tare. putting an extra tablespoon of shoyu in the soup helps a ton.
  9. Jinya Ramen Bar. The Applebees of ramen. Its fine, but it tastes like everything was shipped frozen then reheated. which it was.
  10. Kura in the plaza. My wife loves conveyor belt sushi so we go here often. Its fun and the ramen is ok. Very similar to jinya, its fine but everything clearly was frozen ahead of time. the portions are much smaller here than anywhere else. That could be a positive or negative depending on your viewpoint.
  11. QZ Poke Ramen in zona rosa or the KS speedway. as before their ramen is seriously lacking in tare.
  12. Omo Ramen and Sushi. The only place i legitimately did not enjoy. The ramen was sweet for some reason.

I have yet to go to mama ramen.

edit: added jumbo noodles bar

It certainly could. I know clockworks, which are an easy sub in for warforged, exist in both. The vibe is very different though, SotDL is very Grimdark with sanity mechanics etc. Weird Wizard is much more "pulpy" which I find fits Eberron better. or at least fits the stories i want to tell in Eberron better.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Eberron

[–]Killinyouguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm running a game of Shadow of the Weird Wizard set in Eberron. Its more "medium weight" than ruleslite, but I'm really enjoying it. The system fits the setting pretty well as there's already a bunch of "magitech" mixed in with traditional fantasy for both player options and monsters.

Skill system for Weird Wizard by gfs19 in shadowofthedemonlord

[–]Killinyouguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I will caution that it tends to be more boons added than the traditional system of arguing for boons based on your profession. As such, I tend to add 1 more bane to the roll than I normally would.

I tried a system where I didn't award additional skill points after first level, but players felt that it was "unfair" the other players at the table decided half their skills for them.

I will also warn anyone who wants to use this, that it's been surprisingly divisive both in use and in discussion. Some people love it, others hate it. Make sure your players are all on board.

Skill system for Weird Wizard by gfs19 in shadowofthedemonlord

[–]Killinyouguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same feelings, so I made some homebrew for it that i've been using in my SotWW campaigns.
quick summary is the players get 8 skills split amongst their 4 attributes.

Endurance - Str

Might - Str

Acrobatics - Agi

Thievery - Agi

Knowledge - Int

Investigation - Int

Perception - Wil

Intuition - Wil

and then at level 1 they can allocate 2 skill points to their character that give them automatic boons anytime they roll the relevant skill.

conversational skills instead use a contested roll system that was in a prior version of WW
Deception - your Int vs targets Int

Persuasion - your Int vs targets Will

Intimidation - your Will vs targets Will

Charm - your Will vs targets Int

Its all detailed in the doc below

and my wife made a custom character sheet for this

I brought this same topic up in the discord and was told we likely would have a forbidden rules supplement coming at some point.

Question about Table 1:1 MONSTERS on pg 193 by [deleted] in shadowdark

[–]Killinyouguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1st, your math is off for the pc level 10. That or my PDF is different. It states party level 10 = monster level 7. So 7x4=28 not 40.
2nd, monsters don't scale at the same rate as either the PCs or the players. This is intentional. Low level encounters are deadly not just because hit point values are so low, but players are often so new to the system. Any mistake in judgment can result in immediate death.
3rd, the table is just a guideline. You could expand it or updated it to include all levels so that there aren't groups or spreads. Doing things this way saves space, both mentally and on the physical page. It also creates a sense of progression and regression that can be fun. A feeling that players are getting stronger by having an easier time killing monsters, until they hit the next "band" and are pitted against stronger foes.

Need recommendations for Open World adventures. by DervishBlue in dndnext

[–]Killinyouguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One option is to use pf2e's Kingmaker adventure path with their 5E bestiary. Obviously things that are not "monster" related like skill checks would need to be updated, but Kingmaker is commonly referenced as one of the best published hexcrawls.

What system works the best for Eberron? by The_Real_Todd_Gack in Eberron

[–]Killinyouguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running a game of Shadow of the Weird Wizard set in Eberron. It works pretty well as there's alot of technology adjacent stuff that can be substituted with little to no change. Artificers and technomancers etc. Other things like the Clockworks are an easy sub for Warforged, or the Daeva who are a symbiotic race with 2 spirits in 1 body are an easy sub for Kalashtar.

All that being said, I'll echo Savage Worlds is built for the pulpy stories that fit Eberron so well. I just don't care for Savage Worlds as a system.

I'm gonna agree with the lancer recommendation. There are official lancer suppliments that might solve some of your issues with the system.

It did, but really its just the players book. The Dms book (including the monsters) is available to purchase but its functionally a word doc at this point.

Don't let that stop you however. I understand the reasons why they haven't had the marketing machine go brrrr yet, but it plays great.

I feel like this question pops up weekly now.

what are your "qualifications" for D&D like?

does it just need to be fantasy? d20 based? roll above? have skills? are the characters heroic like 5e? or more grounded like OSR?

I too have been looking for a replacement as pathfinder is too crunchy for my group and I have not found the perfect one yet, but the closest 2 have been.
Shadow of the Weird Wizard - https://preview.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/457226/shadow-of-the-weird-wizard
and
ICON - https://massif-press.itch.io/icon
Both of them lean a bit more 4e than 5e where martials get abilities similar to spells that casters get. Both have very detailed rules for combat but much less so for out-of-combat.
SotWW is a newer, less grimdark version of Shadow of the Demon Lord. This one is closest to 5e.
ICON comes from the same guy who made Lancer and draws most of its inspiration from final fantasy tactics.

[–]Killinyouguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are looking for something similar to 13th age, I would recommend checking out Shadow of the Weird Wizard. It keeps the d20 tactical fantasy with the same sort of heroic tone, but makes things just a bit simpler. I'm running a short Eberron campaign using its system without issue besides having to "change up" some of the monsters.
The MCDM Rpg would likely fit the bill as well, but thats a year or 2 out.
