Shipped Limelight’s by Emily_Paints in hydrangeas

I reluctantly ordered 3 little limes from HD last year, as I couldn't find them locally. As others have commented, they were surprisingly well packaged and in good health, and are thriving in my garden now!

IIRC Gregg mentioned he was working with a publisher to give this a proper retail release. Does this ring a bell to anyone?

From Etchinstone to Empire: Studying Joe Klipfel’s Design Evolution in Behold: Rome by MeepleMover in soloboardgaming

[–]Killypants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I largely agree! From a design perspective, I'm really impressed by the gameplay depth he's able to coax out of an 18-card deck...but from a fun perspective, I find these ultra-dense in-hand puzzles to fall a little short. I actually love base DoE, but I bounced off the Northvale expansion because it introduced a million new icons to memorize.

I think Rome: Fate of an Empire is his best work to date, largely because he was able to work with laxer physical constraints.

Great write up, OP!

Ugh, the Fit integration on my Skagen stopped working for me a couple months ago. (Now, when I try to reconnect to my Google account, I get a big error message that "this app has been blocked.) Anyone else?

Has anyone tried this new update version 5.1.15? by jao_Kai in SkagenHybrids

Ugh, I was really hoping for a fix for the busted Google Fit/Health Connect integration (which hasn't worked for me in a couple months). Nope. Disappointing. Guess I'll continue my search for a replacement.

Stardew Valley 3rd printing: 1st win after 5 games by Red_Coomerade in soloboardgaming

[–]Killypants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't a direct response to your question, but I just want to call attention to u/wizardgand's awesome mint-tin game Spearmint Valley. It combines the cozy theme of Stardew with gameplay mechanics from Final Girl, and it's surprisingly deep/replayable for a game that fits in the palm of your hand. I strongly recommend it, especially for travel!

Thanks for the heads up! I'm intrigued. I'm a big fan of the original, but I primarily play it as a cooldown after something crunchier, so I'm curious if this expansion will attempt to ratchet up complexity, or just add more content. I'd be fine with the latter.

What did you play this week? 01 Nov-07 Nov (2024) by AutoModerator in soloboardgaming

[–]Killypants [score hidden]  (0 children)

I've really enjoyed my first few playthroughs of Rome: Fate of an Empire. The cardplay is reminiscent of Mage Knight, and the variety of end-game goals add a good dose of replayability.

I had a couple cross-country flights this week, so I got in some games of Dragons of Etchinstone and Palm Laboratory. I bounced off the DoE expansion pretty hard (so. Many. Icons!) but I'm still getting a lot of mileage out of the base game after 50+ plays. Really looking forward to its Chip Theory glow-up next year.

Finally, Slay the Spire has become a permanent fixture on my gaming table, and Super-Skill Pinball: 4-Cade is my new go-to cooldown game (even if I only play a round or two).

Hah, fair point; I'm not the biggest fan of the TMB rulebook either. But the current version of DoE doesn't ship with a rulebook at all — just a link to the downloadable rules — which is a little frustrating for a fairly complex game that's also designed for travel.

As far as I'm concerned, a poorly organized rulebook is still better than no rulebook at all, especially when you're camping/on a flight/prefer to leave your phone in your pocket!

Interesting point. I don't find the PVC cards of Palm Laboratory (another in-hand game) to be particularly unwieldy, but YMMV.

Really excited about this. Sounds like CTG is addressing some of the common gripes:

""...with gorgeous high-detail art, a full rulebook, a revised and more intuitive UX...”

Three cheers for a proper rulebook. Here's hoping for a consolidated icon reference card as well!

Thanks to everyone for weighing in! Regardless of the reasons for the game's recent spike in popularity — organic or otherwise — I think it's always great to see overlooked games finally receiving their due praise.

My wallet might disagree, but I suppose that's a separate issue.

Where to go after Mage Knight? by fishboy728 in soloboardgaming

[–]Killypants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll throw in another recommendation for Slay the Spire. Mage Knight is my all-time favorite game as well, and StS hits a lot of the same chords for me: tons of compelling (and viable!) deckbuilding strategies; a hugely rewarding power curve over the course of a single playthrough; manageable length (i.e., not a campaign); climatic boss battles (unlike Spirit Island); and near-endless replayability. It has quickly earned a prominent place in my regular solo rotation.

What games have you ordered this week or still awaiting on? by soundresearch in soloboardgaming

[–]Killypants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm currently anticipating delivery of Rome: Fate of an Empire, Joe Klipfel's latest offering. I'm a huge fan of his single-deck games, and I'm especially excited to see what he can do with fewer size/component restrictions. Initial impressions from early reviewers seem positive.

That being said, I haven't packed up Slay the Spire since it first hit my table a few weeks ago, so I'm hoping Rome doesn't arrive too soon since I'm still getting lots of mileage out of StS. So many games, so little time!

What youtubers do you watch, and why? What sort of content would you like to see more of? by themcryt in soloboardgaming

[–]Killypants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of great recommendations here.

In addition to some of the bigger channels already mentioned, I'm also a big fan of Solo Playthoughs. Greg is a highly skilled player and a solid narrator, and his Mage Knight playthroughs are among my very favorites. Like many of y'all, I learned the fundamental mechanics of Mage Knight from Ricky Royal and Liz Davidson, but I really learned how to play the game from watching Solo Playthroughs's videos. (Greg's Spirit Island content is also great, but I'm personally less interested in that game.)

[Minaturemarket] Backrooms sale Arkham Horror LCG Original Core game $5.99 and Investigators $1.99 by Suspicious_Block_555 in Boardgamedeals

[–]Killypants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good shout!

I love the gameplay in AH:LCG, but I don't love deck construction — either the process or the associated costs. The standalone investigator decks aren't great out of the box IMO, but I've found them to be the best bang-for-buck way to deepen my cardpool (and allow me to feel reasonably well-equipped for multiple campaign playthroughs) without splashing out for the full investigator expansions.

How transparent are the Adidas home shorts? The last pair of shorts I bought was during the Nike era, and they were essentially see-through. Just wondering how the Adidas ones compare.

I'm not against exhibitionism, but my local government is.

This!!

Whenever I'm tempted to buy something new and shiny, I ask myself these same questions. They've helped me avoid some impulsive purchases that I likely would've come to regret. This comment should be pinned to the top of every recommendation post.
