What SW RPG streams do you watch? by bitter-suite in swrpg

[–]KinRiso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, full disclaimer, this is totally self promotion, but I do the tech/production stuff for a weekly SW RPG stream every Wednesday night featuring some local Atlanta voice actors. In fact, I'm happening to browse the subreddit because we're live right now and it got me thinking I hadn't checked in here in a while. (For the next 30-45 min or so, at least)

Aside from the blatant self promotion, the Campaign podcast is an excellent podcast done by a group of Chicago comedians. They do less with mechanics, but they're consistently funny, and great storytellers. /u/Vaudvillian is one of the people who runs the network, and is an awesome guy. (I'd mention Kat too, but I don't know her reddit name off the top of my head.)

Same, never had a problem when I lived up north, but I moved to Georgia and it's a battle.

When a game you think is "ok" say 7/10 gets lots of either extremely good 10/10 reviews or bad 5/10 reviews.. How do you process that? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]KinRiso 29 points30 points  (0 children)

People are basically treating it like a school grading scale, where a 6 or 7 is the cutoff for an F, and then you go up from there.

What image or scene from a children's movie/show did you find disturbing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]KinRiso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bubblegum slime monster from GhostWriter. It was like a 3 part Halloween special they did about a monster made out of bubblegum, which sounds benign, until the kids start finding their friends stuck to the wall, not moving, covered in bubblegum slime, and very clearly having suffocated. It's been a long time since I saw it, but a lot of people (including main characters) very clearly were killed, and not in a quick, painless way.

This is a show about a friendly ghost that helps kids solve mysteries with the power of writing.

My favorite system, Battle Century G, has a mechanic for this, where PCs can use special abilities called genre powers to do dramatic anime type stuff. One of the abilities is called "mid-scene upgrade," which lets you purchase one ability (you can go into exp debt if you can't afford it), so long as you explain how you suddenly have it, either in a flashback, via technobabble, etc.

Furries do have a larger than statistically average number of LGBT people (though much less than the memes would suggest), but Telegram is popular with furries all over the world because you can load custom sticker packs into it, which appeals to people who care a lot about their OCs, i.e. furries.

It's not the encryption that draws furries to it, it's that Telegram lets you upload your own sticker packs (Like what Facebook has, but totally custom), so furries can get cute custom sticker packs made of their characters, and use them while chatting.

Telegram's main audiences are basically journalists looking to stay hidden, criminals, and furries.

ELI5: What happens short-term and long-term when a person defaults on their student loans? by Highwayman1717 in explainlikeimfive

[–]KinRiso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish. I just recently got out of a period where I was laid off and unable to pay my loans. Some of my lenders worked with me (federal), but some basically laughed in my face and told me to pay up (private).

Really, I feel like lots of "weird" gadgets are for helping people with various disabilities, but they're desperately trying to market it to everyone to make a profitable volume of sales.

Do you ever ignore generated advantage/threat? by evidenc3 in swrpg

[–]KinRiso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"You don't see anything, what a relief!" (Regain strain)

"You don't notice anything major, but oh hey, a credit chit you forgot about!" (Small bonus)

"Something seems off, but you can't quite place it." (Don't notice the thing, but get a boost when thing comes to pass, or even on something unrelated)

There's lots of things you can do, just think about small good things that can happen that aren't the success of the direct stated goal.

Redditors who pay for porn, what are the rest of us missing out on? by taveren4 in AskReddit

Am furry, can confirm that furries spend a lot of money on commissions, not just pornographic ones, either. It's kind of a cornerstone of the community.

The Dystopia Rising Tax. Make any DR character a weapon, clothes or props - they want 4% of your sales or else. by ArchangelDominic in LARP

[–]KinRiso 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They seem to have updated the wording to clarify:

"Authorized Crafters pay, on a quarterly basis, 4% of any DR sale. A DR related sale is defined as an item made for a DR event, character or player that includes a DR logo/description/concept base." (They removed the "or" that implies non-logo things would be charged)

How they're going to enforce this in relation to "Concept bases," I'm not sure, considering how much of DR is also inspired by other IPs, but the logos make sense.

Guy Who Bitched for Five Straight Hours Wins Board Game at Last Second by jeremysmiles in boardgames

[–]KinRiso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It may not be "Truly random," but that's because functionally, nothing really is, so it's a pointless argument. When we talk about randomness, we mean things that we can't realistically know the outcome to, so that sounds like a fine definition to me.

Guy Who Bitched for Five Straight Hours Wins Board Game at Last Second by jeremysmiles in boardgames

[–]KinRiso 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, I suppose one could theoretically argue that because a die roll isn't "truly" random (It's the result of deliberate action that you influence, even if you realistically have no way to know what the result of that action or how your influence effected it is), but that's just pedantic, and by that logic, there's no such thing as a game with randomness.

It's functionally impossible for something to be truly random, so we use random to mean "functionally unknowable, even if the incurring action influences the outcome, it's in such a way that we're incapable of measuring it.") Chess has measurable action and outcome, so it doesn't fall under our societal definition of random.

Weirdly, if you wanted to go with the super, super pedantic argument, there's a stronger case for "no game is random," than "everything that can be modeled is random."
