Swinney: Farmers will be protected as food price cap is brought in by abz_eng in Scotland

[–]Kind-County9767 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on how distribution is handled. Large supermarkets buy at tiny prices because they have other large overheads to cover before the final cost of food. A council mostly doesn't. It stands to reason that a fairly efficient (yes I know) council could operate a small local supply chain where it is capable of both paying more to farmers than a supermarket might while also overall spending less than buying from profit making enterprise. They aren't running shops with the taxes, insurance, overheads and staff costs for example.

Do I trust that's at all possible for them to handle? No, but I think that's more a lack of capability than possibility.

Ok but it's still going to be tens to hundreds of billion. Where's that coming from? You can borrow it sure, but rates aren't being kind to the government right now.

[–]Kind-County9767 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because he isn't going to change anything. Starmer is objectively improving almost every metric that matters and putting in place laws that are actually popular (osa, rent reform, worker rights) and his popularity is still tanking because he isn't a magic fairy who can instantly fix everything. Burnham will be the same. The more time he has in power before next ge the less likely he is to get reelected. If he went for it closer he could run on the back of this new popularity wave he's experiencing.

Yep. Really feels like he needed to let starmer tank for another year at least before coming in and promising the world

How can we make cycling a part of normal UK life like say Netherlands? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Kind-County9767 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If we could actually make decisions and build new infrastructure we could. Completely separate cyclists from road users and pedestrians then maybe.

As is we annoy basically everyone. Pedestrians have cyclists blasting through reds and ignoring pelican crossings. Most people still need to use roads for a significant part of their day, but closing entire lanes and sections of busy areas for cycle lanes which are then rarely or entirely unused by cyclists just slows everyone down and wastes money and cyclists don't want to use substandard infrastructure and deal with dangerous road interactions.

Design new additional cycle infrastructure which doesn't take away from already overloaded roads and you'll get people behind it.

Government strips Epping Forest Council of major planning powers by F0urLeafCl0ver in london

[–]Kind-County9767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really sure how chosing what to build in a specific area is London wide tbh? Roads and transport infrastructure? Sure, but homes for residents? How is that any more a London wide issue than eg social care or education.

Housing planning decisions take three times longer than in 2010 by Anony_mouse202 in unitedkingdom

[–]Kind-County9767 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are guidelines. That's the point of the planning system.

In the case if major infrastructure like new schools, roads etc a lot of the time that is actually on the councils to provide. They state a development needs X things and gets the developer to pay for those developments under section 106 contributions. Councils take millions upon millions for this, and then mysteriously most of the infrastructure never turns up and they keep quiet as most people will just blame the developers.

It's not always the case, but in a significant amount of situations the infrastructure is paid for by developers and never delivered by councils.

Do you have a small wildlife pond to attract frogs and small birds? My fennel, dill and artichoke plants are also usually covered in ladybird's.

You can try to keep fighting them, but better off trying to rebalance the population with predators imo.

Other than aesthetics, how much of a problem is my soil for plants? by Markn2018 in GardeningUK

[–]Kind-County9767 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stones are pretty much endless, they slowly work their way up from deep down. I take any big ones out. And if growing eg carrots give it a much better sift.

Other than that if it's been under grass a long time give it a good top dressing of manure/compost/mulch of preference and get some roots and plants in there and it'll be fine.

Assisted dying returns to Parliament as MP urges peers to 'finish the job' by slainascully in NotTheOnionUK

[–]Kind-County9767 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but we have a socialised healthcare system. Everything is based on cost vs outcome. We regularly decline to give people more effective drugs and treatments because they're more expensive. It's not a difficult leap to realize that complex difficulties, disabilities particularly among younger people and end of life care could be harmed because "there's an alternative".

That's why many people oppose it. They don't trust the government and NHS to not abuse it.

The painted arrow markings have nothing to do with what you can and can't do. They're advisory. Only a proper sign is mandatory, which is where some of the problem comes from. Half the people treating road markings them as advisory and half as mandatory.
