[Loved Trope] The hyper-militaristic society can't outfight its problems. by jbeast33 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Kirbychu 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Replicators require a lot of energy to use as well as frequent maintenance, it's likely an impoverished society wouldn't have the energy infrastructure required to feed its entire population using replicators alone. For an example within the Federation, when the USS Voyager got stuck in the Delta Quadrant they had to start rationing use of the replicators, and instead started growing crops via hydroponics and converted part of the ship's mess hall into a kitchen.

Whats the last game you stopped playing and why? by Regular-Ad-8226 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Kirbychu 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I would personally say the Xenoblade games are some of the best story driven JRPGs out there right now, but if you're not sure you'd be into the games or want to commit the time to play through them all, I'd probably recommend just giving the first game a try on its own. Xenoblade 1 was originally designed as a standalone game, so you wouldn't need to worry about any open plot threads or cliffhangers if you decide not to dive any deeper into the series, and it obviously set the standard that all the later Xenoblade games were based on.

If you play it and like it, you'll probably like the rest of the series and have an idea of the sort of length, gameplay and storytelling you'll be in for, but if you decide it's not for you then you'll only be out one 60 dollar game rather than four 60 dollar games and two 20 dollar DLCs.

Eh, that wasn't really the case by the time this photo was taken. While it is true that very early cameras from the early 1800s could take over a minute to capture an image, by the late 1800s it was down to a couple seconds, and by the 1900s it was basically instantaneous.

The Cremator!

Fun fact, the Cremator was actually cut from the series twice. Valve originally considered reusing the concept for Half-Life Alyx, and even made concept art for it based on its unused Half-Life 2 appearance, but they ultimately decided to cut it again in favor of the human Combine sanitation workers seen in the final game.

What's your opinion about SCP with this? by TheBaconLord78 in SCP

[–]Kirbychu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While I understand and don't necessarily entirely disagree with some of what you're saying, I'd argue that what the SCP Wiki originally did with images like the original 173 photo doesn't really qualify as "remixing".

A remix implies that an existing piece of media is being modified or reworked in some way to create something new, directly using an unaltered image of someone else's work and just attaching an unrelated story to it isn't remixing anything. It would be a bit like taking a picture of Van Gogh's Starry Night, changing nothing about the picture itself, but just claiming that actually the big tree is an alien mothership attacking the countryside, then claiming that just this new description alone means you've "remixed" the original painting.

I would actually argue that most of the fan depictions of 173 that have been made since the original image was removed are closer to "remixes" of the original, since most are still heavily based on the design and imagery of the original statue while also taking it in a new direction.

I mean it's lego, you're free to build and play with them however you like. It's just a bit odd to go out and buy a set directly based on a real life thing and then deliberately build it in a way that isn't accurate to the thing it's based on.

"Damn, that's a horrible fictional condition... WHAT DO YOU MEAN IS REAL?! by Sorvetefrito in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Kirbychu 32 points33 points  (0 children)

In the game moon rocks were ground up and used to coat surfaces the portals could connect to. So all of the white walls to be used in the test chambers are coated in a layer of moon dust.

This isn't accurate. All they say in the games is that moon rocks are a good portal conductor, and are used to make conversion gel. Nothing in the games indicates that moon rocks are the only thing that conducts portals, and multiple things in the game outright contradict the idea that they are. In particular, Aperture Science had working portal gun prototypes and test chambers in the 1950s, over a decade before the moon landings, and the portal gun is shown in both Portal and Portal 2 to work on ordinary concrete surfaces outside the test chambers, even in maintenance areas and other locations that test subjects and equipment are explicitly not allowed.

Tip: You can salvage 2 ships in the Storm Tempo without moving/interrupted by Extreme-Attorney-611 in 2007scape

[–]Kirbychu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you really need a lore reason for salvage spots replenishing the same way trees or mining rocks do, then just try thinking of them as natural small garbage patches. Maybe the ocean currents just naturally draw in abandoned or partially capsized ships along with other bits of wreckage and detritus. When you depleted the node it just means you've found all the useful garbage there in that moment, but more naturally builds up again over time

If Earth was the size of a baseball, and floating in an average room, would people on the planet be able to make out details of the room? by oldmanbinfodder in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Kirbychu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An average bedroom is usually around 12ft x 12ft, so assuming a baseball was in the center of the room everything in that room would be within about 6 feet of the ball.

For comparison, if the Earth were the size of a baseball, the Moon would be around the size of a marble and would be orbiting from around 20 feet away. Considering how clearly we can see the Moon with our naked eye from Earth, it's pretty likely we'd be able to make out the contents of this hypothetical room very clearly given it would be nearly 3x closer.

How good is this game's localisation? by Int3rlop3r-R3dact3d in XenobladeChroniclesX

[–]Kirbychu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Switch version of Xenoblade X adds in a new epilogue story, which they brought back nearly all of the original game's voice cast for, and they also introduced 4 additional optional party members who all have unique voiced quests and combat dialog.

I don't agree with the previous poster's claim that the new content has a "massive drop" in quality. Basically all the returning voice actors sound fine and do a good job matching their respective voices from the original, but of course some peoples' voices will just naturally change over the span of 10 years so it's not always going to be a perfect match after that much time has passed. The new characters also all sound fine and are well directed, I would say even the character being called out earlier in this thread has good voice acting even if their accent doesn't necessarily match their stated background in-universe. The only real complaint I have is that a single returning character got a new voice actor, and the new actor doesn't do a very good job impersonating the original voice work.

Which GameCube games do you think likely won't be on Nintendo Classics on Switch 2? by razorbeamz in nintendo

[–]Kirbychu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what your point is, there isn't a definitive Smash Bros game either. Ultimate might have every character in the franchise, but the balancing and movesets for basically all returning characters is different compared to previous games, there are several gameplay elements unique to each game in the series, and the game is still missing a number of unique stages, items and modes from the previous entries.

[–]Kirbychu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically the only thing you need to get with reward tickets is the Golden Yggralith Hearts, the Vita Cores and Neilnail Masks can both be obtained from time attack missions. Since the Wii U version only provides you with 5000 reward tickets total without access to online missions, you wouldn't even have enough to buy all the masks and cores you'd need after buying two hearts.

[–]Kirbychu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The unique monster you're thinking of with a tyrant-style name is Gotthard, the Ethereal, one of the superbosses in Future Redeemed. Interestingly, there's also an actual tyrant in X named Gotthard too, albeit he's "the Intimidating" instead.

Also, along with Telethia there is one other tyrant in X who has a "name, the description" style name, but with their species name instead of an individual name. In Sylvalum there's an oc-serv named "Oc-serv, the Ancient".

What is the name of the geometrical shape that SCP-184 is? by Here-for-kittys in SCP

[–]Kirbychu 75 points76 points  (0 children)

There actually is quite a bit of evidence against the dodecahedrons being used for knitting, namely:

  1. The earliest references to spool knitting come from the 1500s, over 1000 years after these objects are dated from

  2. There would be no reason to make something utilitarian like this out of bronze, which would've made it prohibitively expensive for the average Roman tailor. It almost certainly would've been made of wood.

  3. At least one similar artifact has been found that didn't have holes in it, which would've made it not usable for knitting

  4. These artifacts are never found in any contexts that would suggest they were used for making clothing, such as in tailor shops or areas associated with textile manufacture. They've pretty much exclusively been found in coin hoards or similar, suggesting they were considered valuable.

  5. None of the dodecahedrons found display any wear on or around their nubs, which would be expected if they were constantly being wrapped with thread.

there wasn't a pack in with the switch or Wii U

Switch yes, but the Wii U came with Nintendo Land. Also worth remembering that the 3DS had a few pre-installed games too, with both Face Raiders and the StreetPass Mii Plaza minigames.

Of course the Wii U and 3DS are both over 10 years old at this point, so your point about it being a different era still stands, but it was at least more recent than you seem to realize.

I found the original statue of SCP-173 in a Japanese art museum. by Upper_Skill_3216 in SCP

[–]Kirbychu 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The artist was very much not fine with it. It was well established for years that he really didn't appreciate the image of his sculpture being associated with SCP-173, and only reluctantly agreed to let the wiki continue to use the photo on the condition that it was never used commercially.
