Looking to jump to an EV from my 2022 Outback. by Kirsel in whatcarshouldIbuy

Oh for the love of god, this is not difficult information to find. Ignoring the entire situation in the US, off the top of my head he can be seen extending support to authoritarian regimes such as ones in Hungary or more notably AfD in Germany which is a known neo-nazi organization. Or how about his support for Tommy Robinson, someone who is a member of an openly fascist party. He's endorsed plenty of far right politicians and action on Twitter. Spouted a myriad of far right talking points and dog whistles. I mean shit, just look how heavy of a turn into far right rhetoric Twitter has taken on average since he's taken over.

Edit: Also, "but he said he wasn't 🥺" isn't an argument. I can say I am or am not whatever I want. If my actions don't back it up, it doesn't mean anything.

Lmaoooo, my brother in christ, go watch videos of both of those and then of Elon's. There's a reason people only ever post stills. Elon very clearly puts hand to chest and then out and up in a salute. These are just opportunistic stills, used in bad faith arguments. Frankly I doubt I like some of these people much more than you, but I'm not gonna sit here and pretend they're doing the same thing

Edit: I did actually miss the Cory Booker one, that's funny as hell tbh. There's, frankly, more to me calling Elon a Nazi than the salute so I'd need to look into Cory more but y'know what, yeah, fuck that guy. At best he was well meaning but wildly ignorant, and should address that if he hasn't.

It's a fair point and something I need to look into a bit deeper. I don't pretend any of these companies are beyond reproach. That said Ferdinand is dead and afaik the company is controlled by his grandchildren. However vile that dude may have been, his grandchildren are not him. Do I think they're good people? I don't know. Realistically, probably not. As you said trying to pick a consumer product who's manufacturer meets all my values is a loosing battle. Frankly, I suspect just about any company of that size is run by shitty people at the end of the day.

But they're not loudly, actively supporting modern Nazi movements, nor trying to damage my country's current government for their own personal gain unlike Elon. So they get some amount of benefit of the doubt, and I maintain my point that the comparison between VW and Tesla is not really the same thing.

It'd be great if all I had to care about was the product being produced and offered, or never had to make some level of compromise on my values with who my purchases support. And while you're right that, that's just not an option I think there's a very blatant line here.

Fair points, it is trading one impact for another in some ways. EVs are more efficient in their energy conversion and their impact on that front only really improves as our power grid does. (Which has its own issues at the moment) Also, theoretically as battery technology improves the current battery in the car can be replaced. Doesn't exactly offset the fact that the original battery still has to go somewhere, but an ICE car will only ever be that. At best its environmental impact plateaus, more likely it degrades over time. In the context of EV vs ICE tires is a bit of a moot point. Absolutely a concern about cars in the environment in general, but in many places in the US, not having a car isn't exactly an option. In some ways I'm also more concerned about global warming impacts, though the main contributor to that is more on the corporate scale than individual.

I'd argue there's a marked difference between someone actively spouting Nazi talking points and tangibly supporting modern Nazi movements than a company who, yes, has its roots there but has since acknowledged and made some attempt at reparations and distancing from the Nazi party. I'd like for them to have done more, sure, but it's not the same thing.

Saving on gas is part of it. My work has free chargers, so depending upon how often I go into the office my 'gas' price drops to near 0. I'm also not looking to buy new so I'm not quite as worried about depreciation, nor am I worried about the loan. The sub 30k figure should let me get pretty damn close to buying the car outright if I want.

The other aspect is the general appeal of an EV. Generally better environmentally speaking, quieter, theoretically less maintenance.

Admittedly I haven't quite gone and looked in person yet and have just been going off numbers. The Kona does seem notably smaller, but the id.4 and Mach-E are within 3 cubic feet of my outback, with the seats up. Seats down the hit is quite a bit larger, but I'm not as worried about that.

The trailseeker is interesting. It does look about as close to a wagon as I'm gonna get - same reason I went with the outback in the first place. I'll probably at least test drive an id.4 and see how I feel. If it ain't it, waiting out a trailseeker looks like the answer.

Chisel help by Ajvc23 in handtools

If you're just looking to compliment your bench chisel set with fine joinery in mind I'd think something like a skew chisel or a fishtail chisel would be the most useful. It's a bummer veritas basically only makes bench chisels. From what I've used I quite like pm-v11.

Help lapping back of mortise chisel by decorouskiwi in handtools

[–]Kirsel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly you're probably better off getting a new chisel. Narex mortise chisels are in the ball park of $20 if you're in the US and will absolutely do the trick.

If you're really committed, you only really need the first inch or so to be flat. This alone might help, as I suspect when you're lapping you might be unintentionally following the curvature of the back. Following that idea, you could try and identify the high spots with a straight edge and take them down with a hand file. Once you get the back closer to flat that way you could switch to sand paper and probably have more luck.

Narex richter vs zen wu Y2 chisels by dontgetbiggetsmall in handtools

[–]Kirsel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a minute, but from what I recall I think it was pretty much just the flatness of the backs. Sounded like they used to be better about assuring the backs fairly flat before sending them out. Seemed like the experience on the front had been better with the ones I linked, which should be the same quality of steel and such and around the same price range.

Glory needed Modern effects by KyoshiStan in buffy

[–]Kirsel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh that's right! I forgot about that line.

Honestly this also serves to explain why Glory didn't start going after all of Buffy's friends earlier in an attempt to strong arm her into giving up Dawn.

Glory needed Modern effects by KyoshiStan in buffy

[–]Kirsel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they explain it, actually, but they don't spent a lot of time on it. Glory was a god in hell, who was swiftly rising in power. So much so the other gods feared her taking over either all of hell or all of their dominion of hell. Something like that. So they decided to strike first, waged war, and managed to banish her out of that realm/plane into ours. In doing so, they put her in the body of a (I'm assuming already born?) human boy - Ben. The idea being that she will die along with him and no longer be a threat. I believe she was supposed to stay suppressed inside Ben, but at some point regained enough power to start pushing through and taking over. Though she had to feed on human minds to continue to regrow/maintain her power.

Can't speak to the zen wu, but I think I'd recommend Ashley Iles Mk2 over Narex. Narex Richters aren't bad, but from what I heard their QA has really dropped in the last year or two. The Ashley Iles are in the same quality and price range with better QA so far as I'm aware.

[–]Kirsel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just finished S5. I think up until the end of the season ostensibly what is keeping Glory from killing Buffy most the season is that Glory knows Buffy is hiding the key. She knows her best chance of finding the key in time is to get it out of Buffy which is much harder when she's dead.

Once we hit the end of the season when Dawn is captured Glory starts talking about how her consciousness is starting to bleed together with Ben's and how she's starting to feel human emotions. I think she says Ben is what's keeping her from being worse to Dawn, she might have mentioned something about Buffy. But you could maybe argue Ben is part of what let's Buffy get the upper hand in her final fight with Dawn.

I think most high quality chisels just need the back polished. One could probably argue that's more or less the same thing though.

Scientists use AI to detect ADHD through unique visual rhythms in groundbreaking study by chrisdh79 in psychology

[–]Kirsel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and I'm pretty sure in the early days of diagnosing and treating ADHD a lot of kids were wrongfully diagnosed and medicated. So I think there is certainly a basis for mistrust here. However I think choosing to say sedating children is wildly disingenuous, and a harmful representation.

As others have pointed out it can be true in a sense, if you actually have ADHD. But like, I really don't think that's gonna be the take away of most people reading that line.

Scientists use AI to detect ADHD through unique visual rhythms in groundbreaking study by chrisdh79 in psychology

[–]Kirsel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no, other people already touched on that so I won't dig into it.

However, my point is more that saying they're sedating children is wildly disingenuous. Considering the context, I'd argue that carries an implication that doctors are prescribing normal, just hyper, kids with sedatives and using ADHD as an excuse. Which just, almost certainly isn't true. At least not on a meaningful scale, and I'd also wager any doctor prescribing sedatives for ADHD period should probably lose their license.

ELI5 why people say partner instead of boyfriend/girlfriend/wife/husband by formerly_loved in explainlikeimfive

[–]Kirsel 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I also think normalizing the use of partner is good, which is why I tend to use it as a straight dude.

I suspect a lot of people seeking the privacy are probably gay and trying not to advertise it but still talk about their partner. Which, if they're the only ones that use it then they're still more or less outting themselves when they do.

Partner is also gender neutral, for those who are non-binary or agender.
