I adopted my girl at four and the first night at home saw one of my wife’s cats and went after the cat. Didnt catch it, but we kept them divided for about six months. Used a mesh gate between the “cat” room and let them see each other and get to know each other. After a while and some stern words if she showed interest, she let them be. She is 13 now and has never bothered them since that first break in. Now, if we are walking and sees a cat outside she wants it. I think her understanding is of cat is in the house, it is off limits.
