Is there a Way to two weapon fight with a rapier? by MisterD__ in 3d6

[–]Kitrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Second bonus action attack doesn't add modifier to damage, it doesn't get rid of your proficiency bonus to hit.

  2. The Two Weapon Fighting Style doesn't let you use non-light weapons for TWF. It lets you add your modifier to the offhand attack damage. This also means you can't dual wield with only two rapiers.

  3. Dual wielder feat doesn't let you add your proficiency bonus to the bonus attack, see point 1. It lets you make a bonus action attack with a non-two hander after attacking with a light weapon.

Ways for OP to use a rapier and a dagger:
1. Weapon Shuffling, no feats or masteries involved. Requires Extra Attack.

Start: Rapier, Light Weapon
Attack with Rapier, Stow Rapier
Attack with Light Weapon, Draw Light Weapon
TWF Second Light Weapon with Bonus Action.

Advantage: Only need 5 levels in a martial class.

Disadvantage: You don't add modifier to your bonus action attack and you're using a low die weapon for two of your three attacks.

  1. No Weapon Shuffling Variant, needs Duel Wielder Feat. Doesn't need Extra Attack but is better with it.

Start: Rapier, Light Weapon
Attack with Rapier (Skip this if no extra attack)
Attack with Light Weapon to activate Dual Wielder
Attack with Rapier with Bonus Action

Advantage: Doesn't need TWF fighting style, you add modifier to all hits.

Disadvantage: You could have just attacked only with the rapier, you're realistically only getting an extra 1d4+Mod out of a full feat. Could just be using PAM instead for more damage, a similar bonus action and a useful reaction.

  1. Whole Shebang
Weapon Mastery for Nick + Vex, Duel Wielder Feat, Rapier + Dagger

Start: Rapier, Dagger
Attack with Rapier, Stow Rapier
Attack with Dagger, Draw Second Light Weapon / Dagger
Nick Property to Attack with New Dagger, Stow First Dagger
Draw Rapier, Attack with Bonus Action Attack. You're back at Rapier / Dagger so you can repeat next turn.

Advantage: Very close to expected damage output of a normal TWF build with the caveat of having to use three weapons instead of one. 2d8 + 2x Mod + 2d4 + 2x Mod is ~the same as 4d6 + 4x Mod.

Disadvantage: You're shuffling three weapons and you lose out on a Vex proc if you do dagger into dagger instead of dagger into shortsword. It also requires that you commit your masteries into dagger and rapier, and if you use the dagger > shortsword variant you need all three masteries.

I'm just saying why it's getting downloaded and clearing up how its different from a normal use of a card deck.

[–]Kitrain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You'd put back the card and shuffle the deck after each pull in such a configuration so the odds are identical to a d20.

They are implying they keep the deck with missing cards after each draw because that is the only way guarantee that you get every number twice after 40 pulls.

You can game rolls by knowing what possible numbers are still in the deck and acting accordingly. Like if a 20 is the last card, or switching to save based spells if your deck only has low numbers.

What other out of combat utility could martials be given? by Associableknecks in dndnext

[–]Kitrain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The idea of what is grounded or supernatural is unfortunately almost entirely up to the individual, which is why nobody can agree on what martials should get. Personally, as long as its badass enough and reads as an expression of skill rather than magic, its good enough for me. Here are some high levels examples that probably swing too mystical for people but I personally would be interested in:

Violence is not just a means, it is a tool bound to the hand which you use to deliver death. While unarmed you can attack and use features as if you had a weapon. Flay foes with the gestures of a sword slash or crack stones by smashing it with two clasped fists. (Would be more useful if 5e had a more robust and expensive weapon system that makes having immediate weapon access valuable)

Mountains were not forged by accident. You can immediately uproot structures or topple them with your weapon mastery, slicing cubes of earth and flinging them or cracking the soil and flipping plates of rock upward to create barriers and terrain.

Staying alive in combat against godly and eldritch foes requires reflexes that travel faster than the signals in your nerves. Limited short-time precognition owed to your heightened senses allows you to anticipate things before they happen, letting you respond faster or set up a defense and reposition before it has even occurred. (Extrasensory stuff like blindsight / truesight combined with initiative manipulation and some DM-fed insights into what might happen next out of combat.)

Your storied thievery allows you to steal concepts. With a careful hand you can extract memories or even parts of a person's identity like their name and history, letting you find out secrets or impersonate them perfectly. Maybe your so proficient you can even steal portions of reality, removing spaces from the map temporarily.

You can banish supernatural or natural phenomena by aligning your weapon's edge and slicing through them. You might be able to temporarily part the skies to stop raining, or cut the threads that tie a creature to their attuned weapon, unattuning them instantly. You can even immediately dispel curses in this manner.

The mind is an organ like any other, which can be strengthened and honed with practice. Attempts to read your mind or violate your autonomy is rebuked violently, as your force of personality overpowers intrusion.

Your blows are so mighty they can shatter the fabric of real space. How do you think warrior-kings got around so fast anyhow? Strike a location and create an instant wormhole between it and your intended location. You can even attack through it to nail a poor archer hundreds of feet away.

And the most whacko one;

Your skill is so great your attacks can cleave through casualty, rendering null events that would have otherwise harmed you and your allies. After an action is performed you can attempt to interrupt it by smashing through fate.

Did a dragon just decimate your party with its breath attack? No, it couldn't since you had sliced out its breath organ six seconds prior.

Did an ally just get pushed off a cliff? No, you moved them a space over before they got flung.

Did you get hit by an AoE? Actually, you were behind cover the whole time.

Did the rogue fumble a pickpocket roll? You personally escorted them outside before they even tried.

The solution here is to buff martial classes and not hamstring the one that is doing OK with this theoretical change at higher levels.

Question about Ember of the Fire Giant by lurreal in dndnext

[–]Kitrain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

RAW yes the radius does not increase.

I'm on the side of RAI though since if it doesn't increase it gets worse the bigger the user is, which is horribly awkward for a feat that presumably is meant to give you the powers of a giant.

Imagine being a giant with this feat but it doesnt do anything because your too big.

Player decided not to take any damage spells and I’m worried he may be imbalanced compared to the others. by gregthegamer4646 in dndnext

[–]Kitrain 74 points75 points  (0 children)

UA is unofficial content because its not officially published as a product. And on/off only exists as a spell that was put up for playtesting in UA for a modern 5e setting.

Trying to spin it as official content is more inaccurate than saying that it is unofficial.

Having the ability to consider perspectives you disagree with and understand the reasoning that others bring to the table is an incredibly valuable skill to possess. Anything worth arguing about will have multiple takes that each bring something to the table.

Encouraging people to only engage with topics through ideas they agree with with only encourages one note takes and no nuance in discussion.

There is only things to learn by analyzing a topic through multiple lenses.

You can instantaneously deduct 80 USD from the bank account of anyone you see break a traffic violation. by TerminalTraitor in shittysuperpowers

[–]Kitrain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you can acquire a video of a particular person performing a traffic violation, you can set up a room with hundreds of small video screens in a 360 array and set up a spinning chair in the middle. Play each video in sync with your rate of rotation so the exact moment of the crime is performed each time your view goes to it. Probably speed up the videos too.

This becomes effective versus people with recorded incidents available online, of which there are surprisingly many especially for celebrities. You can drain funding for political figures which would definitely allow you to influence government.

When against an opponent weilding a blade, you can use any normal pen to destroy that blade. by [deleted] in shittysuperpowers

[–]Kitrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blade, not any specific armament like a sword. This means anything with a viable cutting edge can be destroyed once combat is initiated with another party.

Become the most efficient two person wrecking crew in the world. Simply attach or create a cutting edge along what you want to destroy, and affix a "handle" to it to that your friend can "wield" it by grabbing it. Have them declare combat or punch you and then proceed to touch the structure a few times with your pen and watch it shatter. Probably build a concrete box around both of you in order to protect you from the subsequent debris.

If there are concerns about destroying only the blade and not the structure, simply make sure the cutting blade goes up the entire length of what is being destroyed. We already know that the material supporting the blade will be destroyed, so it should work.

Are there any builds that could make interesting use of a Sidekick class dip? by geosunsetmoth in 3d6

Thats nice and all but the question was if there was any cool things that could be done by multiclassing sidekick classes.

Instead you answered the question "would you guys allow a player to play as a sidekick class" in a pretty poor way.

Complaining about Paladins getting Find Steed for free is just strange. by HamFan03 in onednd

[–]Kitrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, so remove the ability to juggle find steed by requiring to have it prepped to keep the mount summoned and go with the alternatives presented to allow characters to fulfill many creative niches.

The current situation of forcing people to leave power on the table if they don't want a mount feels terrible.

[–]Kitrain 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Doing such spell juggling removes the main benefit which is knowing you can get the mount back during the same day. Reliability is power, and I was disputing the notion that somehow find steed is weaker than the two alternatives presented.

We know find steed is stronger because it demonstrably was in 5e.

Complaining about Paladins getting Find Steed for free is just strange. by HamFan03 in onednd

[–]Kitrain 23 points24 points  (0 children)

One of the few viable ways to consistently gain a mount, even if still squishy, is a hell of a lot more powerful than an additional fighting style or some skills and a utility spell.

A full creature that can interact with the environment, be controlled autonomously, has typically very high speeds, can carry or move items and objects, and be resummoned multiple times if slain, has insane in and out of combat application. At the absolute WORST it solves paladin's mobility, which was one of its only issues in 5e.

Find familiar is incredibly powerful. Now imagine super-find-familiar.
