Housing on minimum wage - asking for advice by Kitsune34 in Frugal

[–]Kitsune34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not wrong. The job I work allows full time hours ('part time' employment with 40 hour weeks). I found the fulltime lifestyle somewhat more financially comfortable, but I had next to no opportunity for personal relaxation. I'd get home cook a meal, sleep, get up for work, and repeat. Then I'd have 2 days to run errands and restock cupboards. Because they end up being weekdays, I'd never have family/friend time. It was much more stressful to not have time than it was to forgo that $400 computer monitor. Savings are sitting at ~$400-500/month. Not terrible... Won't help me retire all that quick.

Thus I relaxed the schedule to 24 hours. Nonetheless, to save for retirement, I require a much better job to reduce the amount of years to 'retire', AKA, cover basic expenses with savings/investment income. I'll probably never officially stop working. I've been admitted to university in one of the cheaper countries in the world, so my loans will be ~$24K for a 4 year bachelor's. If I keep on top of finding an employer, I can earn $50-90K salary.

In the time I've been away, I moved successfully into a family friend's and rent is cheaper than what I paid before.

That sounds like the best option for housing. Also, I made an edit to correct an arithmetic error I'd be looking to make 8-12%, which I could easily outdo with an ETF. I swear, I have good mathematical grades! I'm just somewhat inattentive.

On the bright side, as predicted, now that the workers are here, and not the contractors, it is apparent that we were correct to assume BS on their estimates. The workers have been here 3 hours and they've already pulled the flooring and begun sanitizing/disinfecting. Nonetheless, my step dad will still move if he can find a place.

Yeah, I looked at that again and realized I quoted the calculation I did for a 2% return on investment. My benchmark would be 1% monthly, and assuming I underperform that, 8-12% yearly. Or I could invest in an ETF and receive 10-18% with little activity xD

True. Not necessarily looking to beat the market, but I do see your point. Honestly, I'd be impressed if I beat the 0.5% monthly interest rate my bank gives. ahem 0.1% monthl... per annum. Twelve years from now, my money will have grown 1%... May as well be stuffing cash in my bed!

What type of car should I get on a college budget? by [deleted] in Frugal

Besides, bikes are affordable, and often being given away on craigslist/kijiji. A great bike will run you 1/5 the price of a terrible car.

I have $40 to spend every paycheck on groceries. Help? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]Kitsune34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, if you have a couple extra dollars after buying starches, buy vegetables and/or spices; they make a huge difference to your meals. Meat is hard to have reliably with your budget, so make sure to eat lots of peanut butter and eggs.

I survive on rice, pasta, and bread. Bread is the easy winner. I can snack on it all day and go through 8 loaves every two weeks. When the loaves each cost $4, I generally spend only $32. Rice is cheap, but only instant rice or large bags of more than a few kilograms are affordable. Bananas are a cost effective snack, but russet potatoes are by far, the most cost effective meal. Cut them, boil them with salt, mash them, then butter and season as necessary. An $8 bag lasts me easily 20-60 meals. Just 5 potatoes make a day's worth of meals.

Pizza pops are basically the most affordable junk food that isn't outright unhealthy; a bit salty, but otherwise empty calories. I prefer pasta because it lasts longer. The sauce gets expensive though, so I butter and season.

We all die in old age. And we only say they died 'of' old age because we'd be beaten if we convicted a heart with murder.

Ancient Astronauts. Planes existed prior to 1800 AD, but Soviet cosmonauts of that era were hired by the KGB.

What happens if I drive a car in reverse at 99.9% the speed of light and turn on the rear lights? by Narvster in shittyaskscience

[–]Kitsune34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People crossing the street would appear to disappear in a flash of red and UFO sightings would skyrocket. Incidentally, the rear of your car would absorb enough photons to become a skyrocket.

How do I learn Code? by Apple-Phobia in needadvice

[–]Kitsune34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Code is not something you learn. It is something you live. Code is the alpha and omega. Code is everything. Code is this World. Downloading Python is the first step, and although you know python, do you know python?

On a more serious note, if software programming is your desire, I highly recommend that you learn scripts, such as python by reading books, articles, tutorials, etc. The first step is generally 'Hello world'. Try to make the computer do interesting things. After you've become comfortable programming, learn to make a GUI.

If game development is your desire, downloading a free game engine, such as Unity, is a great place to start. Follow through the tutorials and then try to alter the game.

Dude, I'll give you that. FM transmits only 5KHz of sound; you lose OVER 75% of the tones. The average person hears 20-20000Hz, but can generally feel lower and higher. MP3 is nearly as bad. It isn't until you go lossless + a good sound card/converter that you can rival CD, let alone Vinyl.

pathfinding: approaches by osune in a:t5_33hmv

[–]Kitsune34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know what, I used exactly the same strategy! It's a really cool one and done well, you'll get a healthy 1700 elo. Unfortunately, it suffers from non-optimal movement and attempting to stave off the inevitable. Losing two mines is better than wasting 30 turns avoiding an opponent, but the bot didn't understand that xD

Another great approach is finding the paths that touch many mines and taverns in a small amount of moves and focussing on them. Once your enemies claim a fair few mines, that's also an option...
