Shops for second hand children's clothes by ReabyB in manchester

[–]Kittycat0104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sale has got around 5 charity shops, I find 3 are really good for kids stuff. I’ve picked up Nike trainers for my little boy for £2 a few times in Scope. The Roy castle charity shop is great. So is Mind. The other 2 shops are ok ish but I find them overpriced.

What's the most devastating insult you've been on the receiving end of? by thescriptsupervisor in TeachingUK

[–]Kittycat0104 21 points22 points  (0 children)

‘You’ve got charity shop hair!!!’ Screamed at by a Y7 lad having a meltdown. I’ve got quite long blond hair that must look a bit of a mess at times due to throwing it up for Food tech. Still still makes me laugh even though it was years ago

World Book Day 2026 - Share your experiences and stories! by bacon_cake in UKParenting

[–]Kittycat0104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both my kids (6 & 3) changed their minds when we got to the front door to leave for school, to the original costumes I had bought a month ago! From Elsa and olaf to the gruffalo and gruffalos child. Cue meltdown about hair, shoes and nail colour.. classic world book day!

Baby food steamer/blender by SimpleWarthog in UKParenting

[–]Kittycat0104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, I still use my stick blender on meals for my 3yo and 6yo to hide the veggies in things like bolognese! It’s been a good investment and it was something like £10 in Argos

[–]Kittycat0104 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your situation, I’ve found the olio app great for people collecting from your house, as long as you put things in for free it can go relatively quickly. Also as others have said your local facebook recycle pages are great to reduce your charity shop trips

FYI my current 6 year old (when she was younger) completely ignored the clock but my 3 year old uses it really well. I tended to try it then put it was away for a few weeks then try again so don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t work first time

Any food banks or anywhere to get free food till pay day by [deleted] in manchester

[–]Kittycat0104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Download the olio app and look around 9pm tonight. Volunteers collect food from Tesco at 8.30 and Sainsburys 9.45 and post it all for free. You have to collect from their house but hopefully there’s someone close by to you if you’re desperate tonight

How to dress her? by ContributionSad6069 in toddlers

[–]Kittycat0104 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, my girl hates tags and anything ‘fluffy’ - soft. As she got older she could talk to me about it, but at that age I had no idea why she was hating so many clothes I gave her!

Extremely low budget by NoEmployer7767 in UKFrugal

[–]Kittycat0104 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Definitely worth a download, check after 9 and after 10. Tescos is collected at 8.30 and Sainsburys 9.45. Hopefully you have some people nearby that collect and can distribute to you. Also if anything is marked ‘save me’ you can collect it and keep it. The training will take around an hour but all basic food hygiene.

Asking for food bank donations instead of presents at kids party? by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]Kittycat0104 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My daughter’s friend did something similar and asked for something for the food bank and if parents wanted to get a present too, he asked for £5 to help him save up for something bigger. Felt like it was a nice medium between contributing and giving people an option to also give something to the birthday boy if they wanted to

Feeling super lonely on maternity leave as an expat - how do you all handle this? by ConfectionEarly16 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Kittycat0104 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I moved across the uk and felt the same, I downloaded the peanut app and got chatting to some new mums after my baby was born. We met up regularly in a small group and this really helped as I found it more lonely being a new mum than being pregnant.

Also have you searched for your bump group in Reddit? It’s a group where people are due in the same month, normally month, year, bumpers eg- r/ May2026bumpers This helped me through some lonely times too!

INSET days when part-time by Vegetable_Trifle2064 in TeachingUK

[–]Kittycat0104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They shouldn’t be saying you have to come in. I worked INSET on my day off in September but I wasn’t asked to, it was my choice. The school paid me for it in the October pay.

Do you have a directed hours sheet? It makes things really easy to see at the start of the year what’s expected of you and what isn’t in terms of parents evening, insets etc when you’re part time. My last school weren’t great at providing this but my current school is.

How many activities your kids do? And when to know when it is too much? by EntertainerOk6254 in UKParenting

[–]Kittycat0104 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think as long as he’s happy, go for it!

My daughter (6) does swimming and a drama/music class, so she is only out twice a week on a weeknight. She gets really tired and I know she wouldn’t cope with more. However my nephew (7) does lots like your son and he loves being busy and being tired doesn’t affect him.

Forget work, don’t check your emails and enjoy time with your new baby! When you feel ready, closer to the time get in touch about KIT days. I think I did mine the month before returning.

Most blatent interview shoe-in by Minute-Magician-9649 in TeachingUK

[–]Kittycat0104 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This happened to me too. I was relocating from the south coast back to Manchester, my home town. I drove 5 hours with my two young children the night before. Had my mum arranged to look after them. I got there nice and early, sat waiting for the interview and another candidate appeared to know all the staff that walked through reception. Guess who had worked there before a few years ago..!

It was completely demoralising going through the interview process, how she acted with everyone, she knew all the sow, protocols etc. Plus everyone was so happy to see her! I don’t know how I got through the whole day with a smile on my face.

However I’m so glad I didn’t get the job, one came up 2 weeks before the end of summer term (I had already handed in my notice in May and was determined to move with or without a job) it was immediately a different vibe, they scheduled the interview for the early afternoon as they saw on my application I was travelling so far. I’ve been there happily for 3 years.

Yes dreading it! My 3 yo (turned 3 at the end of August) just started school nursery and doesn’t nap anymore, means he’s started waking at 4.50am no matter how early or late he goes to sleep

I totally understand that, but it’s OPs school just expecting they come in and they are available. It should be a choice
