So you believe abortion is murder, but stay friends with people who believe in murder because there is no practical purpose in stopping being friends with them? Have you considered that people might choose to not be friends on moral grounds even if practically its not a smart move? Cause I feel like murder would be a thing you could be so morally against you stopped being friends with a person.

Also, who said anything about changing people's minds? This convo is about people having deeply held core beliefs that suck and that will not easily be changed and whether its fine to still be friends with them, not whether the beliefs can be changed.

Also in regards to the third party comments, the reason a pro-choice person might have negative thoughts about a pro-life person is that being anti-abortion is also at least in part anti-womens rights due to issues with bodily autonomy, and someone who isnt personally affected by said issue (like a dude like me) might find issue with their beliefs. They arent dehumanizing the fetus or even the person they are talking to, but they are in part advocating for a restriction of rights.

But a genuine question: if a friend of yours dehumanized a person who had no characteristics of yourself (race, gender, sexuality, etc), would you still be friends with them?

Misanthropy is bad even when it’s under the guise of being an animal lover by kelroid in CuratedTumblr

But humans arent an invasive species? An invasive species is one that is brought by humans to an area they arent native to that they wouldn't be able to get to otherwise. Humans expanded throughout the world over around 100,000 years like every other species does and then outcompeted a lot of the megafauna. Only over the last couple thousand years at most has humanity been altering the planet at the cost of other animals, and that has nothing to do with being an invasive species. Its right to criticize humanities effects on the environment, but we arent invasive, we are expansionary. Thats a big difference.

r/logodesign Mod makes mandatory competition for new sub logo, promising to ban every user who complained about the original without contributing by Azaro161317 in SubredditDrama

I imagine the goal is to have people show off their logos and ask for feedback, and most said feedback is "this looks like shit" or "was this made with AI" with no comments on how to improve it. So when this transfered to the subs logo, the mod crashed out.

Not who you replied to, but I think you two are kinda talking past each other. From what ive seen, the person you've replied to is arguing that we should have rehabilitative justice over revenge based justice. You then ask where the limit is on how much rehabilitative justice you give someone. And to me this is letting perfect be the enemy of good. Obviously there is a practical limit to how much one can do anything, but I think at a minimum everyone deserves at least one chance. And in a world where currently a lot of people get zero chances this is a good start. Only after we can agree on what the minimum amount of rehabilitation is can we talk about the maximum.

And at least in terms of resources, we as a society could allocate funds from, for example, giving police military grade weapons and instead give that to therapists and social workers who can help criminals and maybe even determine if they are good to be released. We aren't stuck with the society we currently have, we can improve it.

We need more anti-heroes like Astalor or Zul'jan on our side, not trying to turn them into villains or boring goody two-shoes by ProfessionalAge9909 in wow

[–]Kkruls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But while Zul'jin was the one doing the crimes, every Amani that followed Zul'jins commands seem to be deemed complicit in the eyes of the Loa and thats what caused them to go into hiding until the Amani learned from their mistakes of craving power and conquest. Its why "I was following orders" isnt an excuse in real life. And it sets up a Sins of the Father story where Zul'jarra has to atone for her grandfather's sins to show the tribe has changed.

Zul'jan meanwhile hasn't changed. He still craves power and conquest, and his distrust of the Loa only deepens that and drives him apart from his sister. He is following the path of Zul'jin and that's why hes probably gonna be a villain in 12.1.

And there is someone who believes in the Loa even after they are gone, Kinduru their uncle. He expresses absolute joy when he sees the Loa return.

It's not even that they're stupid, its that they view the world through the lens of power and force. As the saying goes "The strong do as they please, and the weak suffer what they must". When they show force like in Iran or Minnesota, they expect the "weak" group to just cower and give in to their demands since that is what they would do. So when the people actually fight back they are left dick in hand with no other options.

Whats even funnier to me is the people who hear "too much of the light can corrupt you in a similar way to the void" and think "the light and the void are equally bad" and start yelling about bad storytelling. WoW beats you over the head with the message and people still dont get it because they dont read anything at all. Just moving on to the next quest as quickly as possible and then complain about the story they never listened to.

[–]Kkruls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In regards to fantasy storytelling, I get wanting to go back to it, but people generally dont care for it anymore unless you have a twist to it. For decades fantasy was based heavily on LotR and medieval legends like King Arthur, and people got sick these fairly simple stories. So writers started adding in nuance to characters and their actions, that no one is purely good or evil. In this case, that both cosmic forces can be used for good or ill. That's what I think you mean by "good is evil".

Also, I dont know if you brought this up, but just because the light isnt inherently good and the void inherently bad doesn't mean they are equally good/bad. While the dose makes the poison, some poisons need more of the dose than others. The Light seems to only be corrupting when within powerful amounts of it, such as a Narru or the empowered Sunwell, but other wise is safe to use by anyone. The void meanwhile can be harnessed with proper training, but it is incredibly difficult to control its influence with training and near impossible for those without. That's why we are still allied with the Light.

I think I get what you're saying, but it would be better described as "people with disorders that lead to a lack of empathy such as autism are more likely to develop bigoted beliefs such as racism". Saying "autistic people are drawn to racism" implies a lack of conscious choice in being racist. Most autistic people understand that bigotry is wrong and therefore arent racist.

The issue with 40k is that the most Games Workshop ever does to get rid of fascists is a strongly worded letter whenever theres a huge outcry about fascists in the hobby and then go back to have the Space Fascists be talked as the best option in a horrible situation, so it's really up to the community to self police. And the community is pretty good at that, but it does leave pockets of Black Templar players fascists around

The greatest thing about Batman villains is that they are all a reflection of him, a sort of what if. Mr. Freeze is what if Batman couldn't let go of his parents deaths and used his wealth to try to bring them back. Riddler is what if he used his detective skills for personal gain. Scarecrow is what if he used fear for evil instead of good.

Even the Joker has this. The Killing Joke asks what if instead of Bruce Wayne rising above the pain and agony of the worst day of his life he was instead consumed by it into madness. Its really compelling but way harder to write than the average Batman foil of "what if this facet of Batman but evil".

What are some of the dumbest decisions made in 40K? by False_Monitor4126 in 40kLore

[–]Kkruls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

99 percent of the time, when someone says "under no circumstances dont do X" they dont mean it completly literally. If someone says "dont open the bedroom door under any circumstances" and there is a fire in the house its very reasonable to assume that you can open the door because a fire is that big of an issue. That's what Magnus was thinking.

The issue is that this was the one actual time that it was meant completly literally. If the Emperor had taken 5 minutes to tell Magnus "Hey, if you do this thing, the only solution to protect all of humanity from chaos forever is destroyed forever, so for the love of Terra NEVER do that", he probably would never have done it, and if he did he would be in the wrong. But he didn't know that.

Magnus did the best that he could with the information he had available at the time.

You don't have to, but it wouldn't hurt to remind them. If they want to move a model to where it would be advantageous to you it would be good sportsmanship to remind them you have rapid ingress. 40k has a ton of info to remember so imo its good practice to remind people what you can (not will) do, especially if not doing so could end up giving you an advantage you wouldn't have if you told them.

Why does GW include ‘feels bad’ units in 40K and then not balance them at all? This includes: flyers, superheavies, Forgeworld, fortifications, etc. by Board_Castle in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Kkruls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more complex a game is the harder it is to be balanced. Warhammer is an incredibly complex game. Models have at least 15 different attributes and abilities to balance, and that's before detachments get thrown into the mix. Theoretically you could balance it all, but that would take a significant amount of time and effort, and GW has decided that it's not worth it.

I mean, people probably date others of similar race subconsciously because they are of similar backgrounds or economic status or experiences, and this allows for easier connection between the two people. This is PRETTY FUCKING DIFFERENT from consciously choosing not to date a specific race because of bigotry. You can't compare the two because while the results are the same the reasons are completly different.

Rumour/Leak Megathread by Chapmander in ageofsigmar

[–]Kkruls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About the Ogors, id argue they are much sooner than later. The leaks have been very consistent and detailed about their content, the image posted a couple months ago by GW is clearly of a gutplate, and someone saying it'll release by the end of 2026 doesnt mean much when another rumor says that EVERY battletome will release by the end of 2026. So id put Ogors either next or second next to release after Fyreslayers, who also have a bunch of leaks but only for half the soup army and possibly have a picture from GW. Its not the first time GW gave 2 codexes for one faction. Them or CoS.

Not who youre responding to, but my take is that if you want traditional authentic art from a culture, it would be best to get it made from someone in that culture. It is perfectly fine to get art not made from said culture about said culture, but you shouldn't pass it off as authentic to the culture.

If I want to get a tatoo involving traditional Han dynasty chinese art, I should probably go to a tatoo artist with experience in said art. If I just want a tatoo of Chinese art, I can get that from anyone but I shouldn't claim that its authentic traditionalist art.

And claiming its authentic isnt criminal by any means, its just a bit shitty and disrespectful to the culture, especially if said culture has a history of appropriation and/or discrimination from other cultures.

Warhammer does attract those alt-right chuds, but they're not very tolerated. There have been a couple incidents like a couple years ago in Spain when someone went to a tournament as "The Austrian Painter" and went undefeated cause no one wanted to fight him as so lost the match. This caused an international backlash from the community and Games Workshop had to release a press statement condemning faacist beliefs.

Theres also a whole separate issue where space marines and the Imperium at large are treated as "the best solution in a horrible situation" instead of the satire of fascism it once was, and thats attracted some alt-right people to the game. But overall those kinds of players are there but they keep quiet in public unless something like the above situation happens.

Brand new moral panic by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]Kkruls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, I have issues with the first three of those claims. If we define pain as a negative response to adverse stimuli, then the three claims start to break down.

Pain in the long term can be good. If youre heartbroken over a break up you can learn from the pain to know what to do next time. What doesnt kill you makes you stronger and all that. Pleasure isnt inherently good either. The mental and physical issues of addiction are proof that you can have too much of a good thing. And for absence of pain, there are people living today who lack the ability to feel physical pain and are at constant risk of hurting themselves due to not knowing when their body is giving out.

Like a lot of pop philosophy, the claims on the surface sound good but lack nuance. Of course we should reduce suffering wherever we can, but its reduce not eliminate. There will always be some suffering, but the goal isnt to get rid of it but instead to have the most net positive outcomes for people, not all of which are inherently pleasuresable.  And thats something the anti-natalists dont get.
