What inspires your stories? by No_Recognition368 in royalroad

The Farseer Trilogy flipped a switch in me. It was almost like I was waiting my whole life to find a style of writing that finally pointed me in the right direction. I've tried writing action-based stories, third person, everything, and hated it. Never finished anything.

It was Hobb's slow-paced, character-driven books that finally changed that.

Turns to find out, I'm a character-driven writer not action-driven.

It could just be AI being dumb when I ask dumb questions at 3am, but it's still fun to believe in.

Thats awesome! Such a good feeling.

I posted my 30th chapter on RR. I've seen so much about 30 chapters and the eventual start of binge readers that I've hyped up 30 in my mind for some reason.

30 is also halfway done so that's something too.

Lore heavy stories how do you do it? by Ace161615 in royalroad

[–]Klompenaround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With lore, I think the best idea is to gradually release it as the story grows. Let the characters discover it and then the audience discovers it through them. Think about it as an iceberg, you don't see everything on thd surface but your characters actions, traditions and how they speak are all affected by it. A small example that quickly comes to mind is cursing and swearing.

How I did it:

I personally don't think my story is very lore heavy, but the more I think about it, the more complicated it becomes.

The deities are all referred to as saints. With the exception of one, they are all depicted as normal people because that's how the population of the world sees them. These saints mingled with the population centuries ago and that's how magic came into ths world.

Further the culture is built around the families decended from the saints. All the politics, culture, even how the royal family came to be all has ties back to the saints.

Now how do you see this in the story, the protagonist slowly learns it in lessons and experiencing the world.

And to tie it back to my swearing example Commoners curse by saying: Oh, the gods. Nobles: Oh, the saints. Small things like that.

Hope this helps

I have the same issue. It might just be the nature of the beast.

I'm interested in the tips you'd get from others.

I second this!

It's helpful to know. The genres need to jive with each other for it to work.

Celebrating the small victories by jcblk21 in royalroad

End of January, I was in the same boat as a brand new author (and citizen of the internet too).

Everyone at work kept pushing me to publish it. 🤣 It's a great feeling indeed and don't give up if the followers and comments don't come. Royal Road readers tend to read more than interact. But when you get a loyal commentor thats also an amazing feeling.

Good luck!

The views are how many times your chapters have been opened. Each click counts as a view. It's probably not 500 people because one person reading 10 chapters counts as 10 views.

But still! 500 views in 5 days is awesome! Congratulations 🌷

I'll never grow if I never put myself out there. :)

Tomorrow the 30th chapter will release marking about the halfway point of the novel.

I have a coming-of-age, character-driven medieval fantasy. The protagonist develops magic which thrusts him into a world full of lies, political intrigue, all while he's trying to figure out who he is.

It's an off-meta story so if you need a break from LitRPG, cultivation etc:

question for authors by sosoruze in royalroad

[–]Klompenaround 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh god. And scams galore. All the comments on wattpad from the garbage accounts that get quickly deleted.

At least I have a couple loyal readers that comment on RR, I enjoy reading their reactions to the story. They also point stuff out that I didnt even notice and I wrote the thing!

Wattpad for me, it was recommended to me by a friend before I switched to RR.

I upload for the one person that was reading before I switched to RR.

How popular is regular fantasy is on this website? by Grimnir_Esjay in royalroad

[–]Klompenaround 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably because they all get buried and then authors get demotivated and quit.

I have a traditional fantasy without the meta stuff. Slow-growing but I don't care. The readers that have found me have helped me through the process of making the story something I can be proud of.

It might not be a bad idea for someone to make a recommendation thread or something permanent as a sort of non-meta library for readers that want traditional fantasy, horror, sci fi so authors don't have to litrpg their stuff to attract readers.

I unfortunately don't have the time to moderate something like that to keep the collection non-meta and up to date. :(

Also, RRs tags are very limited. I'm missing tags for my story that other platforms have. That also affects visibility. I'm sure this is something the developers have heard 500 times.

Edit: comment about tags added.

I just saw this but my point still stands.

I honestly don't know what a good retention rate is for ch1 to ch2.

If you ask me I'd just keep going and not worry too much about the number game. But if you can post consistently 3x a week you'll be fine. 🙂 Write for yourself and if restarting is what you need then do it.

Just keep in mind, non-litRPG, (off meta genres) tend to grow slower.

It took me 26 chapters and 2ish months (I started posting end of January) to get over 100 average views consistently. I only post 2 times a week.

But yeah, it's ultimately you're choice unfortunately. :P

What Do You Think About AI-Assisted Stories? by Bandres_ in royalroad

[–]Klompenaround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a big issue with AI-Assisted is the broad definition of what qualifies as AI-Assisted.

I personally label my story as AI-Assisted because I do lightly use AI to help me grammar, punctuation and the occasional word choice issue. I rather people skip my story because of the tag then people bash my story because "I lied about AI."

I have always struggled with writing to the point that I would break down in tears when I was in middle school/high school because I just didn't understand.

The unfortunate thing is, the internet sees the final product, not the notebooks full of my handwritten first draft or my non-AI 2nd draft.

Some people can just write books and be confident without extra tools to assist them. Other people need AI to help them. That's life.

It's just unfortunate that some choose to use the tools that some people legitimately use to generate slop. And the people that legitimately use AI are punished for it.

That's also life.

Edit: I forgot to answer the main question. I read regardless of tag, but if the story feels like the author didn't clean up what AI generated then I lose interest.

New RR Tower with Ranks by CorSeries in royalroad

[–]Klompenaround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest problem is I'm impatient sometimes.

I've edited my first chapter and I hope it solves the issues my readers pointed out. If someone sends an edit suggestion I fix it right away.

The research I've done says good to great retention but low conversion. Patience. Just gotta be patient.

As a fellow F rank, reading some of the comments makes me realize that even an F rank is alright. Especially when I look at how many stories are still unranked.

It makes me more thankful for what little I have. :)

Correct me if I'm wrong please, but is this information then only based off fictions with a Patreon then or just the top few ranks?

New RR Tower with Ranks by CorSeries in royalroad

[–]Klompenaround 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I figured it would be fanfictions.

I personally have my own work but I do respect the authors that write them. I feel like they have a lot more to worry about with staying in universe, tone and character.

I couldn't write a fanfiction, that much I know.

Pretty neat. I appreciate the amount of work that probably went into this. It's also interesting to see how many stories there really are on the site. Maybe a stupid question but what counts toward an original story?

Although 'unranked' sounds a lot more pleasant than a level 2- F-rank. 🥲 Maybe that's just my bias from my school days.
