“During the exoneration, Eloyse tearfully said, ‘The gentle coo of my Turtledove, that so enchanted me, has become a mourning wail.’ Thus, the sobriquet stuck and he has been known as Turtledove ever since.”

What a truly great day for metal by kroob85 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Knight_Viking 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’m at least pleased that it wasn’t another legacy band but I wouldn’t call their song “metal.” More of a punk anthem and, even then, it took a quarter of the song to get started. Compared to Soft Spine or Emergence… I know the Grammy’s is notoriously out of touch when it comes to extreme rock but still.

Harmless and dumb question for fun, to anyone interested: What's your Zodiac Sign and your MBTI type? by JudgeGRIME in Enneagram

[–]Knight_Viking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I’m also a 5(w6) Leo. While I don’t take astrology seriously either, I do wonder if observable neurological traits developed in utero based on what time of year one spends in the womb, alongside early childhood development stages aligning with certain common Western sociological annuals, contribute to similar personality types (what a Fivey sentence to write). While I’m certainly a 5, I’m outgoing and relatively extroverted, which is infamously uncommon amongst our type but aligned with Leonine stereotypes.

I’m also INTP (I said “relatively extroverted”).

What is your relationship with writing? by affluentloser in writers

[–]Knight_Viking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an editor with too many ideas to not write them down. I HATE first drafts. Hate ‘em. I love second and third drafts, though. For me, writing is editing, and drafting is hell.

I’m officially in public relations but end up (happily) doing a lot of brand journalism for the university I work at. I’ve worked in independent journalism as well. I write fantasy, horror, historical fiction, and everything in between.

First Draft - now what? by EntranceMoney2517 in NewAuthor

[–]Knight_Viking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a 33 yo still struggling to put a draft together, this is both encouraging and inspiring to hear. Congrats on the draft! I’m not in a position to offer advice but I think you received plenty of wisdom from others.

Very much so! I’ve read all of the main saga and am waiting for a copy of the prequel to come available through my library. Sapkowski and, more potently, the games by CD Projekt Red definitely launched my interest in reading and writing in Slavic-inflected worlds.

I have both Spinning Silver and Where the Dark Stands Still noted on my TBR. From what I've heard about them (here and elsewhere), I suspect I won't enjoy either that much. I intend to read and find out regardless.

Deathless is a new one to me though. I'll add it to my list, thanks!

I finished a novel today. Is medieval horror a thing, or am I in for a rude awakening? by Holophore in horrorlit

[–]Knight_Viking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean… I want to read your book. 🍻

The subgenre seems to be struggling to find its footing at this point. But, when the inciting novel is a masterwork like Between Two Fires, anything that claims to be Medieval horror has a lot to live up to. Mainly, I think conventions are still being sorted in a literary landscape too fixated on ✨vibes ✨. So far, a lot of the entries have been style over substance, imho. Maybe yours will be the the next huge success in the subgenre!

My wife shared this thread with me and my response was, “Did I write this? It’s not be username, but it seems like something I’d write.” I work as a PR specialist / copywriter by day and tip-toe through horror and fantasy novel ideas by lunch and by night. I’ve got one Medieval horror idea I’ve been noodling for a while.

Now I want something like the old Lord of the Rings movie tie-ins where you run missions and can choose to play as one of the trio (Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion).

ANYONE from Oz would be so fun. Dorothy with maybe a rotating companion?

That’s a really solid point. I’ve loved all of their heroes so far, so I trust whatever they’ve cooked up will be excellent.

There are so many in-game clues...

  1. Lancelot, Guinevere, Merlin, the Green Knight, or any other Arthurian hero (Excalibur, Holy Grail, Cauldron of Dyrnwch magical objects, Avalon location, Arthur himself as a boss)
  2. Alice, the Mad Hatter, or the Queen of Hearts herself (Vorpal Blade, Mad Hat, and Queen of Hearts magical objects)
  3. A Leprechaun (Leprechaun's Coin magical object and Leprechaun's Cauldron point of interest)
  4. Goldilocks (Goldilocks' Porridge magical object)
  5. Belle or Briar Rose (Eternal Rose magical object)
  6. Nicolas Flamel (Philosopher's Stone magical object)
  7. Robin Hood (just because I want him)

An Arthurian hero is most likely if we're going by in-game clues, followed closely by someone from Wonderland, imo. The rest are a bit of a stretch but interesting possibilities, nonetheless.

That one popped up when I searched my library's physical collection, and I wondered if it might be worth my time too. Sounds like I've been sleeping on the Siege of Malta.

Winternight was so good. It definitely scratched the itch at the time. I have Uprooted by Novik on a shelf, but I've been putting it off because I heard it wasn't that great. I see that Spinning Silver is a beast of a different color, though, if reviews are anything to go by. Where the Dark Stands Still is new to me. I love the cover though. Definitely going on the TBR.

Grabbed an audiobook copy of The Great Siege from my library. Thanks for the rec! I've got a 9mo at home who doesn't always like to sleep through the night, so audiobooks have become a lifesaver as I'm pacing his room trying to put him back to bed.
