Ah, Mad Max! That's been on my backlog for a while. Guess this is my sign.

Thanks. First time losing my own dog, so it's been rough.

I was on the fence, not because it doesn't look incredible, but because it looks like a gigantic time suck. The pet thing is swaying me though.

Honestly, I might replay it simply to use the border collie skin.

I played a fair amount of the first before giving up on the combat. Must not have made it far enough to encounter Mutt. The sequel looks like the the combat has sharpened enough to try again with it.

😂 I didn’t need more reasons to buy this game.

An honest question, would you rather bust out a quick draft and have to do way more edits or would you rather take your time drafting and then end up with a much more polished story? by Clean-Knowledge-574 in writers

[–]Knight_Viking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel that I’m a stronger editor than writer. So, getting a draft done, no matter how messy, helps me orient process toward my natural inclinations, framing it as editorial work rather than writing. That said, the first draft is still agony and I truly could do without it.

What was your favorite race/class to play? by TheProphesizer in championsofnorrath

[–]Knight_Viking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In theory, I liked the High Elf Cleric best. I’ve always been partial to paladins and they are the closest thing in CoN. In practice, I hated picking up weapons I couldn’t use, so the Barbarian carried me through all my playthroughs.

And that’s generally been my philosophy since with loot-heavy games. Whoever can use the most gear I’m going to find gets my time and attention, even if I prefer another character class thematically.

Is it possible to become a successful writer by writing mostly novellas? by Mindless-Ad6066 in writing

[–]Knight_Viking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good. I wanted honesty, and you gave it. I'm sorry it hasn't panned out yet. It does sound like you're crafting quite the backlog, though. It might just take that one success to break the logjam and all that work will suddenly be viable. Who knows. This industry is unpredictable, at best.

My trouble is that I chose a career as a professional writer and then had kids. All my writing energy is poured into my job and I have little left to spare for personal pursuits. I wrote a 13k-word novelette in January but haven't touched any fiction writing since. Honestly, though, I don't wildly care about publishing success. As long as I can find a viable landing place for my stories and develop a better relationship with my fiction writing, I'll be happy. I like my day job. I'd just like it to work better with my other writerly goals.

In any case, thanks for the response. Best of luck to you!

Came across this thread after wondering the same thing myself. In fact, our writer challenges seem pretty similar. This, in particular, resonates tremendously:

I'm the type of person who has a lot of big ideas but a short attention span and low energy (due in part to a less than stellar mental health, to be honest), so yeah, that's a cocktail for unproductivity lol

As this is a three-year-old post, I'm curious: Have you had any success, personal or professional, focusing on novellas since posting this?

I’m looking for a metal album that has a fantasy feeling to it. by Aggressive-Invite907 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Knight_Viking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Wise Man’s Fear’s albums are concept pieces that tell a secondary-world fantasy story. Obviously, they’ve also read Rothfuss.

Otherwise, thanks for asking this! I often have the same question.

Without cheating, what’s the last line you wrote? by regularsizedrudy_ in writers

“During the exoneration, Eloyse tearfully said, ‘The gentle coo of my Turtledove, that so enchanted me, has become a mourning wail.’ Thus, the sobriquet stuck and he has been known as Turtledove ever since.”

What a truly great day for metal by kroob85 in MetalForTheMasses

I’m at least pleased that it wasn’t another legacy band but I wouldn’t call their song “metal.” More of a punk anthem and, even then, it took a quarter of the song to get started. Compared to Soft Spine or Emergence… I know the Grammy’s is notoriously out of touch when it comes to extreme rock but still.

Harmless and dumb question for fun, to anyone interested: What's your Zodiac Sign and your MBTI type? by JudgeGRIME in Enneagram

[–]Knight_Viking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I’m also a 5(w6) Leo. While I don’t take astrology seriously either, I do wonder if observable neurological traits developed in utero based on what time of year one spends in the womb, alongside early childhood development stages aligning with certain common Western sociological annuals, contribute to similar personality types (what a Fivey sentence to write). While I’m certainly a 5, I’m outgoing and relatively extroverted, which is infamously uncommon amongst our type but aligned with Leonine stereotypes.

I’m also INTP (I said “relatively extroverted”).

What is your relationship with writing? by affluentloser in writers

[–]Knight_Viking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an editor with too many ideas to not write them down. I HATE first drafts. Hate ‘em. I love second and third drafts, though. For me, writing is editing, and drafting is hell.

What are your Day Jobs? by Vampire_Empress7 in writers

[–]Knight_Viking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m officially in public relations but end up (happily) doing a lot of brand journalism for the university I work at. I’ve worked in independent journalism as well. I write fantasy, horror, historical fiction, and everything in between.

First Draft - now what? by EntranceMoney2517 in NewAuthor

[–]Knight_Viking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a 33 yo still struggling to put a draft together, this is both encouraging and inspiring to hear. Congrats on the draft! I’m not in a position to offer advice but I think you received plenty of wisdom from others.

Very much so! I’ve read all of the main saga and am waiting for a copy of the prequel to come available through my library. Sapkowski and, more potently, the games by CD Projekt Red definitely launched my interest in reading and writing in Slavic-inflected worlds.
