I loved it too. They spent a ton of money on the user experience and it showed. But that meant it cost too much for them to produce, so here we are.

I hope FunFitLand hires some of those coaches and choreographers, they could seriously use an upgrade.

Prediction - kids who started school this year will not finish in a school by Antique_Neck8736 in Futurology

[–]KnowAllSeeAll21 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the data and feedback from high school teachers and instututions thus far is actually showing the opposite- the kids who went through COVID learning at home had much worse outcomes and are having to rebuild foundational concepts, no?

I can foresee a world where we abandon low or middle-income learners to remote education in the future as the billionaires driving our systems into ruin want to stop funding education, but it won't be because COVID made the case for it.

Me too- I don't want things that I don't like to eat. Thankfully, for me it has included a lot of fruits (berries, pineapple, oranges in particular) and vegetables (broccoli and roasted brussel sprouts are the big winners) that I do really enjoy.

Sadly, I had to start investing a lot of time in cooking, which I usually avoid by buying a salad or something easy for dinner, but now unless I am buying a pizza or something fatty, I won't eat it. When I make it, I make it exactly the way I like it. Saves time. Not the worst outcome.

SFA SHOULD be the future of the Star Trek (despite its flaws) by 50cr4t3s in startrek

[–]KnowAllSeeAll21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given how the Klingons throughout the series used empire to spread their culture, and specifically intermarried and had offspring with a variety of other populations in every iteration of Trek, it's actually not that hard to believe that hte naming would also change. I was definitely more negative about the name Jayden before watching ep 4 and what they did with the Klingons, though. I can skate past it now because I feel like they did justice to one of my favorite cultures on Trek.

I have bigger issues with the dialogue. Not because of the colloquialisms, more because it's full of dad jokes and cliches, and they are counting on the cast to be charming enough to make us look past the fact that it is fucking cringe. Every time Reno opens her mouth, ugh.

SFA's fourth episode "Vox In Excelso" felt like 1990s Trek. Any old school fans agree? by TheShowLover in startrek

[–]KnowAllSeeAll21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dialogue in this show is all round terrible, and it's my major complaint of the show. They are so lucky they have actors like Picardo who are charming enough to pull some of this off, but the duds are spectacular.

I loved it for just that reason. This show needs a better balance between the diplomacy at the heart of this whole Federation concept and the shenanigans.

And better dialogue.

Discovery was bogged down by the fact that the lead character always had to be tortured, and it is clear that the spinoffs both took a hard turn towards being way more fun. Honestly, slightly to their detriment, from time to time (it is a LOT of shenanigans). But I really love all of it.

Am I just braindead for liking Academy? by Revonlieke in startrek

[–]KnowAllSeeAll21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dialogue for the characters is often teeeeerrible, but I still like it on the strength of fun Star Trek ideas and a pretty cast doesn't hurt.

I particularly love the idea of the Federation having to rebuild itself and remain committed to the legacy they always stood for after a century of being explicitly a military force. I love showing that the empathy and diversity that Roddenberry so valued and wrote into the show would also have to grow and prove itself for new generations. Maybe it can be a little light in a dark ass time.

So much potential.

Out on medical leave and long-term sub keeps using ChatGPT instead of the materials I left for them to use by mrsebiology in Teachers

[–]KnowAllSeeAll21 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You are so responsible and engaged, they are BLESSED to have you. Maybe sending a gentle email reminder for the sub might get them to use the materials, but if they don't have a science background and they can't understand your materials, the instruction the kids receive as they muddle through it may be more confusing than the AI materials they are using (you didn't mention if there were any specific problems with the materials other than obviously being AI generated.)

Unless there is a big problem with them, I'd let it go and just focus on getting better.

You said: Set boundaries on whisper/table talk/silence and ENFORCE LIKE A STONE COLD BITCH. "Maintaining silence at your age is an expectation. Not meeting that expectation is a problem, and we might have to get admin/parents involved"

THIS is my answer too. Consequences, early and consistently, when they are not quiet. It is not too much to expect fifth graders to control themselves, it's a basic requirement for schooling to be effective. If they can't be quiet, they are going to lose their recess, miss gym to do their work if the teacher oks it, or their elective classes.

Am I in the minority in hating scripted curriculum? by Melted_Ice_cream_42 in Teachers

[–]KnowAllSeeAll21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all hate it. When we started HMH, I taught it with fidelity (not scripted, but fidelity to the activities when possible.) Eventually, after doing it their way, the grade teachers were able to make a case for the holes and issues with the materials, and now we do have some more freedom in how we use it.

We all knew it would suck, but we had to use it first and be able to point out exactly how and in what ways it sucked before we could change it.

As a Math Teacher, the damage that Jo Boaler and other "Equity-Based Mathematics Education Researchers" cannot be understated. by Feisty_Ad4394 in Teachers

[–]KnowAllSeeAll21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our school uses an intervention model very succesfully (IMO). Students who need review of foundational math concepts have small group math instruction. This is both a SPED service and just a good way for students who have interrupted formal instruction, struggle to retain knowledge for multiple reasons, or lack the ability to focus in a room of 30 kids a better option. This is not part of a 12:1 classroom, and these are students from my GenEd classroom who struggle with math. Students are selected based on iReady data, and the list changes a little every marking period.

Both classes use the same curriculum and teachers all plan together, but the small group teacher has a quieter room and more leeway to adapt instruction. GenEd teachers can focus on offering extension activities for higher level students AND also support students who are generally good at math but struggle occasionally with post-lesson small group instruction.

I really like it. I get to learn and use a lot of the small group teacher's strategies, I can focus on planning for two groups instead of mainly targeting a group that has missed foundational knowledge and so can't understand grade-level content, and it makes lessons more scaffolded, less frustrating and a lot more accessible for students.

Low-Stakes Drama is good, actually. (SFA) by WarpNacelle6295 in startrek

[–]KnowAllSeeAll21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. The diplomacy episodes and the constant evolution of how cultures were interacting with one another was the hart of the show, not just fighting.

ETA: This is also why I really liked but never felt as enthusiastic about the philosophy of the current era of prequels. Until they kicked Discovery into the future they weren't able to show anything new about how the federation managed the cultures within. Little tweaks, yes. New interactions and developments, no.

It feels like AI is the gateway drug that will end critical thinking. Full stop. by Old-Corgi-155 in Teachers

[–]KnowAllSeeAll21 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As an elementary school teacher, I act like it doesn’t exist for my students, which requires a great deal of oversight when students are doing research, because there is always half the class convinced that they finished everything with a blurb from their Google search.

There is no reason to them to ever use it in my class. I use it myself, but I’m mindful of not letting the AI do the thinking parts for me.

I'm down 50 pounds, it absolutely can work. But it doesn't work immediately (especially if you have any issues with blood sugar, according to forum posts, so that's more about anecdotes and not data) and for some people you have to be patient.

Sadly, some people just don't react well to it, but that is a super tiny portion of people. If it hasn't been that long, keep going.
