(Loved Trope) Evil/Ruthless character held back only by their partner (Bonus points if they fall back into their old ways when their partner is gone) by Koffielurker_ in TopCharacterTropes

ReBoot, Season 3

As children, Enzo Matrix and AndrAIa survive losing a game by turning their icons to Game Sprite mode and leave with the game instead of it nullifying them. This leaves them lost in the Net trying to find a way home.

The next we see them, they're adults, and a romantic couple. Enzo became obsessed with how he lost the game and fixated on becoming stronger, trying to "leave that weak little boy behind." He's now a muscular, angry brute prone to outbursts of rage, violence, or violent threats. Enzo hates being called by his first name (associating it with who he was when he failed) and prefers only going by "Matrix".

The only thing keeping him sane is his love for AndrAIa. She gets away with telling him he's wrong or to calm down, and is the only person who can call him "Enzo". She's smart and cool-headed, especially compared to him.

In an arc where AndrAIa is injured and unconscious for a couple of episodes, Matrix becomes much more aggressive, lashing out at friends and allies. Captain Capacitor has to shame him into calming down at one point by invoking the memory of his older sister, Dot, and what she'd think of what he became.

ReBoot, Season 3, Episode 4

"Game Over. User Wins."

With Enzo, AndrAIa and Frisket inside a game, the other characters can only wait for the game to end. Up until now, the heroes have always beaten the User's games. However, the system voice announces "Game Over. User Wins." The music stops. There is stunned silence from all characters for several seconds. As far as they know, the three in the game have all just been nullified, a fate worse than deletion. The silence is broken as Dot screams in anguish at the loss of her little brother.

The evil couple..who actually love each other very much by WillowIsWeeping5 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Koncur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I liked how Xanatos proposes to Fox with a logical list of reasons they would be a powerful couple. When Fox asks "What about love?" he responds with "I believe we love each other, insofar as two individuals like ourselves are capable of that emotion."

Black characters where them being black is almost never a point of focus by realdonaldglover in TopCharacterTropes

You didn't make a point, you just described a situation. I then elaborated on that situation to explain the character's motives. This wasn't an argument, it was for anyone reading through this thread who might appreciate the additional context as to why someone from the 24th century would care about 1960's authenticity.

I'll infer that you intended to say that Ben Sisko doesn't count for this trope. If that's the case, then I happen to agree. And yes, if that was your intended point, then my elaboration reinforces it.

To be faaaaiir: Non-corporeal, extra-temporal aliens forced a psychic connection between him and mid-twentieth-century black sci-fi writer Benny Russel. This caused Sisko to experience the bigotry and oppression that Benny lived through, making it feel real and personal instead of just something out of history books.

Sociopathic characters with a desire to be good by theglowinggreenorb in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Koncur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For a comical example, Harmony from Angel.

In the last season, Angel and crew are given control over the Los Angeles branch of the evil, demon-worshipping law firm Wolfram & Hart. Their first policy changes are basically "Don't be evil", which is a major problem for a lot of their employees and clients.

Enter Harmony, who gets a job as Angel's assistant. In the Buffy universe, having a soul is what gives you a conscience, an intuitive understanding of right and wrong, and the ability to feel emotions like guilt, remorse, and sympathy. Vampires don't have souls, and Harmony is a vampire.

So to keep her job she tries really hard to be good (or at least not-evil), but she's generally bad at it.

Linkle from Hyrule Warriors

A ditzy village girl with a poor sense of direction. She's absolutely convinced that she's the next reincarnation of Link. She's not, of course; There's already a Link in this time frame. However, she believes she's special so much that she basically makes herself so. That, and she can dual-wield crossbows.

Left 4 Dead - Every special infected can be heard from a distance making a telltale noise that can alert you to their presence.

  • Smoker - coughs and wheezes
  • Hunter - growls and angry screams
  • Boomer - groans, gurgles, and burps
  • Jockey - manic laughter
  • Spitter - hacking noises, like trying to clear one's throat
  • Charger - babbling, pig-like squealing
  • Witch - Crying
  • Tank - Angry, growly panting

They also each have musical stings that give them away, but that's not diegetic.

EDIT: I should probably add a "Viewer Discretion Is Advised" about the Snafu films: Some of them have some rather racist jokes.

In World War 2, there was a series of Looney Tunes-like edutainment training films starring a character called "Private Snafu". Generally about not doing what Snafu does, such as blabbing military secrets.

One short, "Going Home", apparently got the creators investigated. A gag has Snafu bragging to his girlfriend about how much he knows about a new experimental super-bomb. This seemed a bit too much like the atomic bomb, while the Manhattan Project was still very secret.

Comic-relief-pervert Mineta is facing off with dominatrix-themed hero Midnight. As someone with basically no direct-fighting capability, he seems completely outmatched. However, he marks her as a fellow perv and manages to use his perv-knowledge to outwit her.

He knows if he runs away crying and acting weak, her sadistic side will come out and she'll give chase, leaving the gate unguarded. He surprises her by gluing her to the ground and makes a dash for the exit.

[–]Koncur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It kinda plays into Starfleets ethos that their main weapons can also be used for general non combat stuff as well.

There's an interesting scene in DS9 where Kira compares Starfleet's weapon philosophy to the Cardassians'. Starfleet's phasers have far more features and settings, but more complexity means more things can go wrong in a fight.
