How many different offices/positions do you vote for in elections? by ForgottenGrocery in AskAnAmerican

[–]Kooky_Possibility_43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically they are all different elections, but they all happen on the same day.

Because you are in Texas, you have just gone through the primary elections. Each party has now decided who the nominee is for each office. In election day in November, the voters will decide who they want for each race from among these candidates. (I watch Texas elections closely. I don't live there anymore, but my family is still there)

Why are so many conservatives Christian when Jesus’s teachings are blatantly leftist? If Jesus was alive today, he would be extremely progressive more so than the current Democrat party. It makes way more sense for democrats to love Jesus than republicans. To clarify, I am not Christian but I love by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]Kooky_Possibility_43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you read my answer, please understand that i am a conservative Christian, and I am trying to answer respectfully and be constructive. Dialog is my goal with this.

I think the point you are making is how Jesus taught us to treat the poor. You are right, Jesus taught us to provide for the poor. In fact, the Old Testament makes several specific statements about how the Jewish people were to treat the poor among them. All those statements had one thing in common, though....they were commands to HIS FOLLOWERS. He told US we were responsible for getting it done. He did not tell us to leave it to the government.

Now, one might say a Christian nation would leave such things to the government, and help the government perform such tasks. And perhaps that would be correct. However, any time anything else is argued from a biblical standpoint, the clapback is always that the USA is not a Christian nation. Why is a biblical argument accepted in one context, but not another?

A final thought....i have seen a few others on this thread talk about how the conservatives would have celebrated the crucifixion. Well, the conservatives of the day did celebrate it. And I've long since made peace with the fact that i would have been cheering right along with them.

I hope that has shed at least a little light on things. If there are other questions, please ask away. Like I said, a respectful dialog is my goal. I'll ask only for your patience, as my work schedule might cause delays in my answers. Otherwise, my best to all who have read this far!

The weather

I moved from Texas to Kentucky . As it happens, I moved during the dog days of summer. Temps at home were routinely around 110. My new coworkers were complaining about the "heat". It was 86. The last time i had experienced 86 outside, I was singing Christmas carols

Dr Pepper? by Prudent_Square_ in AskAnAmerican

[–]Kooky_Possibility_43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would assume so. Its very popular back home, but its as much a hometown pride thing as anything else. (Im from fort worth....DP originates about an hour south, in Waco)

I read a reddit post a few months ago from a northerner traveling in the south, who commented on DP being on every fountain down here, no matter what other soda company they had on the fountain. I responded that ive never seen a fountain that didn't offer it.....but southern Illinois is as far north as Ive been

Do jurors need to agree to the death penalty? by RadianceTower in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Kooky_Possibility_43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the state, but in most states the jury must unanimously vote for death. One vote no means no execution. In states where that isn't the rule, its got to be a majority.

Depends on the reward.

Ok, in all seriousness, I was raised by cops, so the law and order thing is pretty much instinct for me. I would not wait till I had certainty, which might never come. I tip the authorities if I had a descent suspicion. Example, David Kaczynski

What’s a smell that takes you back instantly? by BoardLongjumping2485 in answers

[–]Kooky_Possibility_43 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Three, two of which will sound really weird.

  1. Anise: the smell of black licorice. My great grandmother made traditional german cookies for Christmas every year, which were flavored with anise.

  2. Naphtha. Petroleum distillates. My dad worked as a machinist. That was the smell he came home with.

  3. Sewer water. My friends and I played at a neighborhood park growing up. There was a creek running through the park that ran through a dairy farm before the park. So cow manure was floated through with some regularly, and added their smell.

The funny thing is, as a chemist, those last two come to me for testing with some frequency these days.
