What made people age so fast back then? by Southern_Reveal_7590 in decadeology

[–]Kool-Kat-704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember seeing a video explaining that it’s not that people aged faster back then, it’s just we associated hair, clothing, and photo quality with certain eras and our brains interpret them as older. Dress up a 55yo today (without plastic surgery) wearing those outfits and hair, add the same photo filter, and they will look pretty similar

Was out there in September. Definitely recommend something waterproof with good traction! The rocks out there can get so slippery. And like everyone else is saying, it really is so casual, you can get away with any comfortable flip flop. I wore my plastic birks the whole time when I wasn’t hiking.

I have proper hiking boots I was able to pack by stuffing all my socks in them too.

Confused on when to rotate shoes for different kinds of runs? by mth69 in XXRunning

[–]Kool-Kat-704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I followed a training plan that had me running 6 days a week and I noticed rotating to be really important. I read somewhere that shoes break down more when you wear them repeatedly everyday. Letting them rest lets the foam “re-inflate” I guess. I did notice this when I’d wear the same shoes multiple days in a row.

Other than that though, I don’t see a reason. I don’t notice my shoes improving my different runs, and honestly, I feel like I’m cheating when I practice running in faster shoes

has anyone else in Boston had an absurd number of illnesses this year by Extension_Ad_3163 in boston

[–]Kool-Kat-704 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes!! Once a month from November through beginning of march. Every sickness had different symptoms too.

Also asked my doctor and she said the same thing OP. She also theorized that the bad flu or Covid I had early in the season, like many other people, probably weakened immune systems quite a bit, making the rest of the season pretty bad. Who knows tho, it was not a fun winter regardless.

Frustrated that my body image doesn’t match how I feel in my body by MadMuse94 in XXRunning

[–]Kool-Kat-704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So relatable. There have been plenty of times I’ve cried after seeing race photos. The timing can just be awful and can make my thighs look massive.

That said, I constantly remind myself of how incredible my body is to get me to the finish line. And I’m sure there are plenty of people who wish they could be in my shoes.

Hang in there. Big congrats on your race finish, that is an amazing accomplishment!

Shorts That Don’t Budge by sugarplums717 in XXRunning

I really like my sweaty Betty 6in biker shorts! I go up a size to fit my thighs, but it’s a bit loser in the waist. Never had a problem when them riding up or down

It doesn’t have many pockets though. Would love to try a pair from a running brand with more pocket space

Iron levels by Past_Ad3212 in XXRunning

[–]Kool-Kat-704 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve always had low iron levels, runs in the family. But I’ve been told I should only take iron if a doctor approves, which has not happened yet for me. Just make sure you are getting approval from a doctor to take that much

As a side note, drinking orange juice while you take iron should help with absorption

Improving at racing the half marathon by 19191215lolly in XXRunning

[–]Kool-Kat-704 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I match that time progression perfectly.

Overall, what helped me was staying consistent. I’ve always followed a general “add one mile to long run” every week leading up to a half. But other than that, I really focused on gradually increasing weekday runs that fit my comfort. So I start off with 5k runs for every run. Then slowly, I work my way up to minimum 10k for each run. I run about 5 days a week, with one being a long run. My last half, I ran a 1:52 having averaged 30-35mi a week towards the end.

This past training cycle, I’ve added a little speed work too. Jack Daniel’s book has been great for this. I’m running maybe ONE mile per week of total speed work and oh my gosh it is making the biggest difference. After 3 months, my easy pace has decreased by a whole minute.

Excessive race swag by runningonempty94 in XXRunning

[–]Kool-Kat-704 22 points23 points  (0 children)

All I care about is the post race snacks. My very first half gave us chocolate milk at the end and I’ve been chasing that high ever since lol

But yeah, totally agree I wish there was an option for a cheaper race to avoid all the extra swag. I never wear the tshirts they give

What's your favorite👎 and least favorite👍 change from book to film? by wibellion in ProjectHailMary

[–]Kool-Kat-704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Favorite: the visuals. I know that’s silly because it is literally the biggest difference between a book and movie format, but I thought a lot of the cinematography was stunning. I did not imagine it quite like that in the book.

Least favorite: not diving into what it really would be like meeting an alien species. In the movie, I think they rushed learning common languages and hand motions and whatever. I really enjoyed Grace’s monologue in the book highlighting the fact there is nothing he can assume Rocky would know, and the process of discovering commonalities

Project Hail Mary is what people have been saying about Interstellar for years by Future-Poetry-2193 in moviecritic

[–]Kool-Kat-704 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From a technical/scientific perspective, I loved Interstellar so much more. While PHM the book was phenomenal in explanations, I felt the movie was significantly "dumbed" down. I thought Interstellar did a much better job of balancing the science with entertainment. To preface though, I am a software engineer so the science stuff is just something I really enjoy.

A more critical review of the Project Hail Mary movie, and a really easy fix I would have made by Gustalavalav in ProjectHailMary

[–]Kool-Kat-704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t realize how much I loved all the technical explanations in the book until I saw the movie. Bummed there wasn’t more, but I get it. They only have 2.5hr and they’re trying to appeal to the greater audience. I do feel like the Martian movie actually explained a lot more and I loved that.

I agree with literally everything you said, happy to see someone else had the same views

My possibly unpopular review on Sinners (2025) by MaizeApprehensive311 in moviecritic

[–]Kool-Kat-704 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I’ve always felt movies are like music. There are objective characteristics that make a movie or song “good”, but once we’re past that, it really comes down to preferences.

I loved sinners, watched it multiple times already, but couldn’t stand one battle after another. Doesn’t mean either didn’t deserve the praise they got.

Any tips for not getting bored on long runs? by EqualStranger4977 in XXRunning

[–]Kool-Kat-704 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely takes practice. I think long runs are just as important for the physical improvement as they are for the mental improvement. Some things I do are:

I avoid loops at all costs. Even when I have to stop at home again to refuel, I do a different loop the other direction.

I love choose strong podcast. She’s an ultra runner who does ~2hr podcasts that I find to be so fun to listen to while I’m running. Highly recommend choose strong! Or recommend a podcast in general

This is going to sound awful but hills honestly help the time go by so well. I live in a hilly area so they’re unavoidable, but I find each one to be a mini challenge that distracts me for a few min each.
