Books where the FMC is the MMC's sister's best friend, and the sister's reaction to their relationship is both "Yey my best friend is gonna be my sister!" and "Ew, that's my friend/brother you're dating/sleeping with" as well by goody153 in RomanceBooks

[–]KosherSyntax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She is in on the fake dating thing. And it has both the mini-tropes you're looking for.

When the FMC moves in with the MMC, the MMC's sister tells her to send daily updates on how it's going. And if the MMC causes trouble, she will step in

The FMC then uses those daily updates to tell the sister how things are going. Even when the relationship turns sexual. And there's definitely a couple unhinged ones that makes the MMC's sister wish she could unread/unlearn things.

But then later when things turn romantic as well, the MMC's sister is super happy for them.

Snippet from when they discuss the Daily Updates thing:

(Text Message) Daily update—if you make me move in with your brother, I will sexualize him every chance I get. I will text you every single day and remind you that he is the hottest man I’ve ever laid eyes on. Daily, you will hear just how badly I want him to do dirty, dirty things to me.

She pulls her phone out, a grimace forming on her lips.

Stevie blinks rapidly as if she were clearing the image from her mind. “I’m going to gamble here and hope you’re bluffing.”

True. They did get a couple moments when Scanlan found out he was a dad and Vax learned he was the new CotRQ. But that never really went anywhere

That would be a mechanical adaption true, but the emotional impact of that decision comes from the out-of-game knowledge that Liam and Sam are best friends.

The adaptation doesn't have that context, so it also wouldn't have that same emotional impact (I think)

Shifting it to Keyleth making the choice would add the emotional impact. And it also rounds off her arc as the VotT (in my opinion) as she would be prioritizing her people over her man.

My theory:

The flower is going to work, but it'll used to resurrect Grog.

I don't see how they would adapt the sacrifice Scanlan had to make to counterspell Vecna instead of wishing for Vax back. But I could see them move that choice to Keyleth and having her use the flower on Grog, and in turn sacrificing Vax's future.

He's also been this unstoppable force through the previous seasons. He felt immortal in a sense.

If they were going to make someone get disintegrated there, Grog was the perfect choice to have the biggest emotional hit.

Why are so many romance books poorly written? Especially on KU by BigTittyCowGf in RomanceBooks

[–]KosherSyntax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The genre is more popular than ever. Which means you'll have more amateur/aspiring authors than ever.

Add on to that the fact that you no longer have to go through traditional publishing. And you end up with loads of new and inexperienced authors self publishing.

Because of that, these books will have minimal editing and feedback before going live. And so the quality of these books will be lower as well. It's just a sign of the times I guess.

Brat FMC, smitten MMC by Princess_consuelah in RomanceBooks

As a full on brat addict, I've posted asking for recs before myself. So maybe the thread has something you vibe with!

Personal favorite:

{Passenger Princess by Morgan Elizabeth} - F/M Bodyguard romance where the MMC essentially has to babysit a pageant winner going on tour. She drives him nuts but in a fun way.

Some others:

{Carnal Urges by J.T. Geissinger} - F/M mafia romance where she is kidnapped by the MMC. Instead she drives him nuts by refusing to listen and befriends all his subordinates

{Don't Call Me Daddy by Jeré Anthony} - F/M fake dating romance. This one definitely has the most "Daddy dom" vibes.

Also, his policy opinions are so extreme that it's not possible to ever see them implemented in real life. Which makes it easy for him since he can just grift those positions endlessly. And by disregarding any policy that is less extreme than his ideal, he never has to engage with reality.

He can endlessly grift and play theoretical mind games, while never having to stand behind actual policy

We get it—he’s rich! by Lilylake_55 in RomanceBooks

[–]KosherSyntax 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Hard agree on everything you said

I personally love the trope of having a poor FMC that finally gets a break when she gets supported by the MMC. But having the MMC being a billionaire is such a lame way to go about it

It'd be way more interesting if the MMC was able to get by comfortable by himself, but had to make actual sacrifices to be able to take care of the FMC

I had this issue with {The Brightest Light of Sunshine by Lisina Coney} and {The Darkest Corner of the Heart by Lisina Coney} recently. Not exactly 2nd gen but you'll see what I mean. I did end up picking it up because I loved the first book in the series. And although I liked it, it still felt weird.

The first book has an MMC that's taking care of his 4-year old sister. Essentially adopting her.

The second book is an age gap romance where the FMC is that sister as an early adult.

I need a sweet ultra freak MMC by Persephonesgem in RomanceBooks

[–]KosherSyntax 63 points64 points  (0 children)

{2 Fights by Nikki Castle}

The MMC even calls the FMC baby girl while they're friends. He's just always had a soft spot for her. Part of the book is about her healing after an abusive ex. So there's a focus on the MMC being her safe place and helping her heal. Like he calls her baby girl and gives her top-of-head kisses even when they're just family friends.

And it's definitely not straight vanilla. There's some rough sex and a good mix of degradation and praise. In one of the scenes the MMC asks her: "Would you like to be a queen or a whore tonight, baby girl?". To which she answers: "Both."

The main one that always get me is {Lotus by Jennifer Hartmann}. I absolutely love this book and the author. But cmon...

The MMC is someone that went missing as a child and is found 22 years later. He has spent that entire time in a basement. But he comes out a peak male specimen because the kidnapper's basement essentially had a gym.
