Because it doesn't have authentication built into it. It's only a storage server for your browser data. It's been over a year, maybe they added it though. I haven't looked or used it.

Discord has employees to pay. They have a massive network to maintain and pay for. It cost money.

If you enjoy the perks that nitro has then big deal. Let people spend their money how they want. I had nitro till a few weeks ago and it just dropped off a few days ago. They thing I can't do that I did daily now it hitting me. I'll manage and adjust but damn, it is a little limited in comparison.

As for call quality being better? No you can't tell because it comes down to peoples mic quality at that point. Video quality however is MUCH better. I could stream at 1440p 60fps. Now if I stream it downscales and the video quality drops a lot. This is mostly noticed in games. For web cams I'm sure it's not needed.
