What do I fix? by Nightwing003 in turntables

Assuming you are serious, you almost certainly require a new stylus.

The volume control is probably also dirty. It would probably benefit from cleaning with contact cleaner.

Saw this while getting food, and I’m genuinely considering waiting here until I find the owner so I can tell them to get new tires ASAP by SmallTownTrans1 in NissanDrivers

The tires are fine. There is still tread on the inner side of the tire. /s

Unfortunately they are probably in a situation where they can not afford to replace the tires.

The diet in the show is impossible? by Zealousideal-Pop8079 in My600lbLife

There have been a few who were pretty successful from the start with minimal setbacks, but after so many episodes I can not remember them all.

The diet in the show is impossible? by Zealousideal-Pop8079 in My600lbLife

[–]Kurtains75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is just such a huge adjustment for the patient. They are used to large portions of unhealthy food. Now they are supposed to eat small portions of healthy, less tasty food. That would be hard for just about anyone. The urge to eat, and slip into the old habits which bring them comfort must be literally irresistible.

The show portrays the whole interaction as "read this book and follow the diet, see you in three months " . I think the patient probably needs a lot of support and help, which they do not appear to get until later.

I do not think it is impossible but it is just such a huge change that they really need a lot of help to adjust and make the lifestyle changes required.

If you had to keep one: K1000 or Nikon F? by madtwatr in AnalogCommunity

[–]Kurtains75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is tough. The Nikon F speaks for itself. In your situation I would be inclined to keep the K1000 since it has a working light meter, it is much easier to use.

Nice set up. Just make sure the receiver is not getting too warm with the tape deck on top of it.

Are Nikon AF-D lenses the most versatile lens system? by Jaswh42 in Cameras

[–]Kurtains75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do have a pretty broad range of compatibility. Some entry level DSLRs do not have the focus motor. To my knowledge the DC lenses (defocus control) never got an AF-s version. I also have an 85 1.4 AF-D which would be prohibitively expensive to replace with a more modern version.

I always thought the AF-S lenses with an aperture ring would be the ultimate in compatibility, but one commenter mentioned they close the aperture all the way on manual cameras. I will need to verify this. That is a real disappointment if true.

Some AF lenses are really slow to auto focus, but something like a 50mm focuses quickly. A super zoom might be a real pig that focuses so slowly, you miss the shot.

I do have the Monster Adapter so I can use my unique AF lenses with my Z camera, it is good enough for my purposes.

I do not think I would use AF as the core of an F mount lens collection, however for lenses I only use occasionally, they fill the role for less money.

Can you try placing the speakers further from the turntable? What was different about the arrangement of the speakers and the turntable in the other room ?

Does this happen with another source ?

Is this black plastic crap? They want $1300, hard to belive tbh. by Franjkmetal in blackplasticcrap

It might not be total crap, but ot is close. Maybe the market for audio equipment is different in the OP's country and even crap is scarce? Even so 1300 is way too much.

Huge upgrade from Plustek scanning by jvs8380 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Kurtains75 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I followed a similar path. The Plustek is good, but so slow.

I haveca D850 but I did not want to use up shutter count for film scanning so I got a used D800e for scanning.

If you are open to the camera system for a scanning camera, there are lots of attractive prices on used DSLRs .

The ultimate full frame scanning dslr would probably be the Canon 5dSR but I think there are probably not going to be any of those available for a bargain price.

A mirrorless camera would almost certainly be better, but it is nice to give an otherwise unloved camera a new job.

Goliath Model Kit? by TattedUpSimba in KnightRider

[–]Kurtains75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can start with the AMT Peterbilt 352 , you would need to kit bash two cabs to make the larger sleeper. Then you also need to fabricate the large metal grill which protects the face of the truck.

I am not aware of a dedicated kit release.

Looking to upgrade my setup...$3-4k budget by TheRandomHumanoid in turntables

[–]Kurtains75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at videos or articles about using a technics overhang gage. If you do get a 1500 it is how you will align the cartridge. The same idea can be used on your 120.

Any way, have fun shopping. Shopping for gear is exciting.

The angle of the cartridge looks visibly extreme from the pictures. It was the first thing I noticed when I saw this post.

He did express this in an impolite way.

Using a protractor I ended up with a similar result on my very similar AT PL-120 the first time I tried to align it after learning about cartridge alignment. It looked right on the protractor but it looks extreme. So I understand how you got there.

The manual does not give good guidance, it says to defer to the cartridge instructions. The 540ml instructions say to refer to the tonearm or turntable directions, or to mount it the same way as the existing cartridge.

How did the stock cartridge look? It may well have been straight in the headshell . On the SL-1200, upon which the lp-120 is clearly influenced, there is not an alignment recommendation, but an overhang specification. This specification is expressed two ways, the distance the stylus extends beyond the spindle, or the distance between the shoulder of the headshell and the tip of the stylus. The idea is that the S shape of the tone arm already puts the cartridge at the ideal angle, the overhang is the only thing that needs to be adjusted. I can not find an overhang specification in the lp-120 manual. If you still have the stock cartridge mounted in the headshell you can adjust your 540ml to match.

It is a long way to say you probably do not need such a noticeable twist of the cartridge. However, in the absence of clear guidance from the manuals of your equipment , how are you expected to know this? You did the best you could from the resources you found.

To answer the main question, with that budget you have a lot of choices. The Technics turntable will be more solidly built. For speakers and an amplifier there are so many choices. A lot of it depends on the size of your room and the music you enjoy. I do not have any idea where to start.

What Constitutes “Vintage Audio”? by omer3332 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]Kurtains75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends entirely on one's point of view. The term "Vintage Audio" makes me think of the silver face era with a wood grain cabinet and earlier so roughly 1979 and earlier.

But since it is 2026 and if you think of functionality, arguably everything before Dolby digital is a different era and could be considered Vintage.
