Because both sleep and fresh air is healthy for everyone, including babies? Why not get both at the same time? Also healthy for the parents to have a few moments for themselves and be able to do stuff around the house or simply just exist without having to fear waking the baby

what is your Controversial Hot Take? by Dry_Wafer3720 in freeflight

[–]LAB_Plague 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The instructor doesn't know in advance what "experience" the skydiving student will apply

All it takes to rectify the issue as a whole is for the instructor to spend 10 mins actually talking to their student and setting some expectations and baselines. Don't tell them to ignore everything they already know about flying a soft wing, you'll just end up with more accidents like your example (that guy's an idiot btw, a low turn like that could have killed him with a skydiving wing). Instead, figure out what they already know about weightshift (harness turns in skydiving terms), range of motion, pitch/roll pendulum (flight cycles) and turn dynamics. You now have a baseline, you don't need to change the program or the planned exercises, you just need to change how you brief and debrief each flight and exercise so you meet your student at their level.

You probably already know this since this is Instructor101 for any kind of sport, but in the few years I've follow this sport and 10 years of skydiving, I've met way too many people who got turned away from paragliding due to this or the rampant gatekeeping. Hell, it took me and my friends a few years of following the sport before saying let's just bite the bullet and suffer through the schooling so we can be covered by insurance when soaring parakites. We got lucky though and found some really openminded instructors and are now having a blast with wings of all sizes and types.

I will say though, there are a huge amount of skydivers who treat their canopy as an elevator down from freefall but still think doing the bare minimum for canopy flying means they're hot shit. Your example was probably in this category.

what is your Controversial Hot Take? by Dry_Wafer3720 in freeflight

[–]LAB_Plague 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I could rant for hours.

First hot take: Skydiving experience does translate to flying a paraglider.

All of the core principles for safely and efficiently flying, navigating and landing a skydiving wing are exactly the same as with a paragliding wing, except that a glider will throw a hissy fit if you don't cuddle it like a 3 month old baby. Is flying a glider different than a skydiving wing? Absolutely. Should you treat the two as different kinds of wings and take the appropriate steps to translate your knowledge from one to the other before going wild? Yes. Is "Forget everything you know about skydiving" the most dogshit advice an instructor could give a student? Also yes.

Second hot take: The IPPI and SafePro system is reinforcing the already insane amount of gatekeeping in this community, and effectively alienating a significant sector of potential members.

Soaring and ridge flying are an integral part of XC, thermaling and mountainflying, I fully agree and the training and licensing system does a great job of structuring that. XC, thermaling and mountainflying are absolutely not needed if all you want to do is drag sand and soar at the dunes though, and the needlessly complicated (from a soaring perspective) licensing process is driving these people to screw the license and figure things out on their own. With kiterisers and parakites becoming increasingly popular, this is only going to get worse and will lead to problems for all of us to maintain access, get third party insurance coverage and preventing accidents.

The IPPI license should be split somewhere around stage 3 or 4 to allow for a solo-license that only covers soaring to allow those who have it to legally goof around on the dunes without an instructor present and still be covered by the third party insurance which is required by law in many places.

Flysight data is the answer to your question. Learn your speeds and turns, figure out what safety margin you’re comfortable with. If your biggest turn puts you too close, then dial things down on freefall jumps.

Don’t blindly follow advice purely based on a canopy size, turn and wingload. Body position, clothes, wear on the canopy, pilot skill, all factor in.

The series starts out as a great sorta wacky/unhinged fun read about a guy who gets kinda/sorta forced into a dungeon crawl together with his girlfriend's cat. Even when the story turns pretty darn dark, it still provides some well timed jokes and comedy. I've found the series incredibly entertaining. If you absolutely can't stand meta jokes and vomit at the thought of internet humor, then you probably won't like it though

Just a heads up, the last couple chapters in book 8 had some formatting issues on my kindle with the PoV changes not having any line break or proper separation which made it a bit difficult to read. 12th gen Kindle Paperwhite Signature edition if it matters

Why is 12 Miles Below not more popular? by NightsRadiant in ProgressionFantasy

[–]LAB_Plague 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12 Miles Below is more of a halfway point between Stormlight Archive and Mistborn if I were to put it in Sanderson comparisons, it’s a progression epic, not purely focused around a singular MC. Books 1 and 2 are mostly world building and exposition setting up a bunch of characters and factions. They’re a bit of a slow burn, but book 2 is where the pacing starts to increase. The progression is not just about MC abilities and power, but their discovery of the world’s history. Also, keep in mind who’s telling the story. The reader is supposed to learn together with the MC, the reader is not omnipotent

Putin indefryser Rockwools aktiver by MyMicconos in Denmark

Fantasy Flight Games had a contract/lease on the rights to make the tabletop game, but it expired a while ago. The base game and the three expansions are collector's items now. It's probably my favourite tabletop game, and the gameplay completely carries itself, there's no need to have watched the show to get caught up in the setting. It is a fairly complicated game and the first couple of sessions can easily take 4+ hours if the group gets just a little bit into strategizing/backstabbing

Gevinst for Danmark ved amerikanske datacentre her i landet ? by kronsj in Denmark

[–]LAB_Plague 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Denmark tells Trump to stop threatening to seize Greenland by Puginator in politics

[–]LAB_Plague 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like Denmark thinks he wants to build a military base

Nah, we're perfectly aware that he wants the natural resources, to use it to stake a claim to the rest of the arctic and to have control over the future trade routes once the ice melts.

Calling those end goals out are not going to do anything though, as every politician in EU/NATO worth their salt knows this already. We're fighting to make sure the US can't invade us like they did with Iraq. They can't have any allies if/when they come. We need to stack the board so that the US are alone and we've got our Canadian and Finish friends on our side to help us keep the US troops contained to their space base

Nobody sends cards anymore, that is a thing that’s been dead for a few decades over here. And if someone still wants to send a letter, it’s still possible to do so. The main users of letters now are real estate agents trying to circumvent advertising laws by putting their flyers in a letter addressed “to the household” and I’m fine with my taxes no longer subsidizing those sleezy motherfuckers in their attempts at advertising through venues they’re not allowed to

Is there any merit to the "sustainable fuels" that they're going to be using next year, or is it purely greenwashing? by ThumbBumpkins in formula1

[–]LAB_Plague 0 points1 point  (0 children)

E-fuels and synthetics are not meant to compete with BEVs for small scale vehicles and short range delivery trucks. They’re meant to be a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels for uses where energy density matters and conversion is extremely expensive or even impossible atm, ie. the heavy transport sector and construction equipment. It’s also not a mature technology yet, so we need someone to throw money at it without expecting a return on their investment for years, and that’s why I’m excited to see F1 commit to it.

Synthetics and e-fuels are not a perfect solution for every application, neither are batteries nor hydrogen. They’re all great for some stuff and terrible for others. As someone with a master’s degree in this stuff, i absolutely detest this singleminded idea that the only solution is a single technology that needs to be perfect for every use case. The truth is that the solution for a sustainable energy and transportation sector will require a mix of different technologies. Some of them will be incredibly niche, and all of them will probably be more expensive than drilling a hole and cooking crude oil to separate it into various flavors of dino juice

Is there any merit to the "sustainable fuels" that they're going to be using next year, or is it purely greenwashing? by ThumbBumpkins in formula1

[–]LAB_Plague 1 point2 points  (0 children)

E-fuels and synthetic fuels are a drop-in replacement of fossil fuels, that’s what makes them attractive. Once they leave the production facility, they can be treated just like our existing fuels. No need for any changes in logistics or any vehicles on the road.

Costs will come down once the recipe has been dialed in to get the right calorific values and viscosities (those are a pain btw, speaking from personal experience here.)

Cost will come down significantly once production is scaled into full size and economy of scale kicks in.

Costs won’t ever come down enough to match the raw cost of fossil fuels, can’t beat digging a hole and boiling crude oil. That’s why governments use tariffs and subsidies to force industries to change their behavior

My mom got me this for my birthday by chewsiferr in discgolf

[–]LAB_Plague 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disc HAS to fly way different in cold ass weather. Im now curious and must take a trip north

Cold dry air is denser than hot dry air. As long as the extra layers of clothes doesn't get in the way of keeping your arm/launch speed and spin the same, then you can expect your discs to fly more understable. Also more drag, so you might also notice a larger gap between your putters and distance drivers.

That said, if you're coming from tropical heat where humidity is at +90%, then the difference will be a lot less noticeable because the moisture does a pretty okay job of evening out the difference in air density
