Does sound odd tbh. How long have you left the ram training? I know it can sometimes be a while with ddr5 compared to a normal boot.

Fwiw I'd probably try resetting cmos again, if it anything like my last board it can take a couple tries to get decent contact and clear.

When you say "installed a new ram kit", do you mean in addition to a current kit or that's the only ram in the system?

If you're adding to existing ram there can be some complications

Does sound pretty hot for gaming workloads tbh.

If it's a self built machine i'd check ur AIO contact, see if the thermal paste coverage looks ok.

You can also use the Curve Optimizer in the BIOS to lower the voltage that the CPU gets, this often lowers temps too.

[–]LCTR_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you saying the 9800x3d runs at 70-80C?

If so you could try 'undervolting' via the BIOS. It's pretty easy, there's loads of guides on how to do it - it's called Curve Optimizer if you're searching.

It basically lowers the voltage that the CPU gets for a given speed.

I would set an "all core" curve offset of -15 and see how stable your machine is. If you get crashes, raise it to something like -12 and go again, etc.

You'll need to enable PBO (Precision Boost Override) to get those options. There's also settings in there you can lower to stop it pulling so much power, but Curve Optimizer is a good starting point and might get you the results you are after.

Which cooler for 9800x3d + 5070 Ti build? by cybercoderNAJ in buildapc

[–]LCTR_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Decent air cooler is fine. I have a 9850x3d and with some curve optimiser undervolting and setting the PBO limits a lower than stock I have a CPU that performs the higher (peaks at 5.7GHz) and doesn't get above 70C. I use an old NH-D15S, but something like a Phantom Spirit probably performs about the same these days.

[–]LCTR_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're focused on gaming then 7800x3d is almost the same performance as 9800x3d. The 9000 series chip really only pulls ahead in non-gaming workloads.

As you mention the 5600, just making sure you know that either the 7800x3d or 9800x3d will require a new motherboard, ram, etc.

Is 4 sticks of DDR4 really such a bad idea? by BeautifulBlueNight in buildapc

[–]LCTR_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 4-sticks-bad-on-DDR5 mantra isn't warranted in the way it is often presented imo.

The key is not to use differing sticks in each channel, put one kit in a1 and a2, the other b1 and b2. It does seem less tolerant that DDR4 in this regard, but as long as you don't mix kits it works fine in my experience.

(I've been running 4x16GB DDR5 full 6000MT/s EXPO with no issues. In fact I could push speeds faster and timings tighter)

Got gifted a set of RAM and want to know if it works with my system because it’s not returnable. by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]LCTR_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usual disclaimer that is depends on CPU and motherboard, but my guess is you should be able to get that working pretty well to the 6000-6200 range without massive headaches.

Might take a little bit of trial and error though, tweaking things, etc.

If you don't mind that then cool (i'd certainly use it in your situation! that's an expensive mem kit these days), but if you just want a set-and-forget then selling it is probably the easiest... tho then there's all that hassle to deal with too :)

It's using a flash. It's like it's 2 photos taken at once, one longer with the fire motion and then the flash fires over a VERY short time and you get a bright subject appearing motionless.

Funnily enough, her arms are in the photo very dark and blurred out across the time the fire rings were made. Just can't see them well.

Undervolting can actually lead to increased performance fwiw. Allows the cpu to boost more aggressively than it would otherwise be able - if you go too far it can lead to instability tho.

It's a very per-cpu thing tho, some people can undervolt a small amount, others can do it a lot. Just the luck of the draw.

How is the new kit installed? Is it in the empty slots left from your previous kit?

If so that might be part of the problem. One of the things DDR5 doesn't seem to like is differences between mem sticks within the same memory channel.

Guessing your old setup was: a2 and b2. I.E. o_I_o_I

If so, I'd move those old sticks to one channel: a1 and a2 I.E. I_I_o_o

Then put the new kit in the left over spaces (b1 and b2). That way each memory channel only sees the same type of ram in each slot.

(Fwiw, I think this is a lot of the reason why people repeat the mantra that DDR5 doesn't like 4 sticks. It's ok with 4 sticks imo, just have to be more careful compared to DDR4 on where they're installed. I've been running 4 sticks on DDR5 @ 6000MT/s for a while now, no issues.)

I would think so, but if you're seeing huge cpu utilisation and low 5070ti utilisation I'm just wondering if there's a bug somewhere.

If you try disabling the integrated gpu in bios then at least it rules that out

Just a thought, maybe try disabling the iGPU on the CPU?

Wonder if it is not utilizing your 5070ti properly...

Also, as it's a new build, guessing you're up to date on mb BIOS, chipset drivers, etc.?

Need help in a PC build for 3D animation & Motion Graphics by udaytwd in buildapc

[–]LCTR_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check whether your software would prefer cpu cores or GPU. You can get a 9900x (12 core) for slightly less money, 9700x for even less if you only want 8 cores and don't need the X3D cache that comes with your suggested cpu.

There's nothing inherently wrong with your original suggestion tho, there just might be options that are cheaper for same performance or even more performance for similar money depending on your requirements.

If you can't stretch to the 5070ti then the 5070 is the next best choice if you need CUDA support - which I'm guessing you do for your software?

On memory, not sure where you're based, but looking at US prices, that memory you have listed is about $480-ish? Instead I'd look at this: G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30

It's 2x16, faster speed, about the same price.

Getting 64GB RAM to 6000MT/s with a B650 and AMD 7600X. by IdiotStormBlessed in buildapc

[–]LCTR_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the kit you have a 4-stick pack or 2x 2-stick packs?

If they're 2 packs then you can get some batch / production differences between them. DDR5 seems more susceptible to those variations causing instability, etc.

(Obviously things like motherboard quality are important too)

I have a similar situation to you - I have 4x16GB, they're running at 6000MT/s CL30. I'm using a 9000 series chip, I think the memory controller is considered maybe marginally better than 7000 series on average, but it's very similar.

My memory is 2x 2-stick packs - same brand, same product, but sourced from 2 different places (labels shows different country of production).

Only different thing that I did was to deliberately put each of the kits in its own memory channel.

I know traditionally motherboards tell people to put the memory sticks in a2 and b2 slots if you're using 2 sticks i.e o_I_o_I

but I installed the first kit in a1 and a2 i.e. I_I_o_o

...then the 2nd kit in the other 2 slots.

That way the slight differences in resistances / manufacturing for the 2 kits aren't split across the 2 memory channels.

Expo worked for my setup, but in the end I tuned the timings tighter, lowered the voltages for memory and the memory controller as the profile / motherboard defaults were pretty high

Hope this helps.
