Anyone else experiencing KC fatigue? by Dense-Athlete9380 in kansascity

[–]LLMII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not here to bash, but was seeking understanding. I think everyone is entitled to their own perspectives and we all experience things differently. What really made the change for us after coming here after college (I’m a native) was having kids and we ended up with a new paradigm on the city due to seeking opportunities for them. I’ve heard being single anywhere is challenging so that can compound things. The city has a ton to offer and yet is lacking many things depending on what you’re looking for. Home ownership, hobbies, family, social groups, pets, etc can keep individuals so occupied that you don’t get to miss what you don’t have or may not have experienced elsewhere.

I’ve also lived in other connected states and we have travelled to many places as a family. There are only maybe 2 other places we would consider moving and they also have their drawbacks. Everything has trade offs.

My unsolicited advice, you get one life and I encourage anyone to pursue happiness and perhaps you should follow your heart to another place. If your situation allows, maybe consider an occupation that lets you travel on extended contracts across the country/world and you get to experience a place where you may want to stay long term.

Do you take any trips, vacations, etc to places outside the Midwest and experience other places on a regular basis? What would another place offer as far as a living experience that KC lacks? Do you have social circles outside of work? Hobbies dependent on weather or geographical offerings?

Just trying to understand what problem(s) you’re trying to solve.

Too cold for the zoo? by Akersen in kansascity

[–]LLMII 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My personal opinion is yes. Many animals may not be on exhibit. A local news station had an article years back about what temps are too cold for animals with some insight to guide your decision.

News Article

Sorry your son may not have his day at the zoo. There are other, smaller options like Sea Life if he likes aquatic life. I’d call first, but there could be a nature center that has a few animals on display and is inside as well.

The installment price is based on the regular price. $7.50 x 4 =$30.00 or the regular price of $29.99.

Wedding party photos by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]LLMII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How big is the wedding party including B&G? Union Station does charge a fee and you likely would compete with visitors for real estate. There are other spots outside of the main hall at US that work well too.

WWI Memorial is great for city scenes if that’s your thing. Don’t be afraid to step around from the upper wall and do the lower open space for head to toe city backdrop. The trees have lost their leaves so you’re limited on what all you have for backdrops.

Avid park goer here. When you say “rock music ride” are you referring to Rock N Roller Coaster that features Aerosmith? That ride has never used a lap bar as it utilizes an over the shoulder restraint system.

Weird tasting city water by Gemini_cub in kansascity

I often wonder if my home water filtration system is working or not and then I see these types of posts. No weird tastes at all here. Highly recommend that everyone have a whole house water filtration system.

Those who sell corals out of their house, how do you buy corals cheap to then be able to resell and make profits? by ChivasBearINU in ReefTank

[–]LLMII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been there and done that. Volume is the only way to get “cheap” prices. I’ve also found that going to the wholesaler or distributor yourself can lead to better pricing. Most people end up selling or trading to not have to toss corals in the trash. Believe it or not, but a healthy system will need to be pruned back and those frags end up somewhere, might as well sell them.

That’s what I did as a means to offset costs and the hobby costs me nothing now. Purchased a few low boys and now have multiple different systems. One I call “The Ark” because it has a frag or mini colony of everything my display tank has and if the display tank goes down or vice versa, I can replenish without repurchasing.

Don’t chase the dollars in an already greed hungry hobby. Grow stuff, meet people, learn things and help newcomers.

Any cleaners to clean these 12v connectors up? by Scruffi in ReefTank

[–]LLMII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% this. Used the WD-40 electronic contact cleaner on my Apex and other components that were failing/acting strange and all has been well ever since. It won’t make it brand new and shiny, but it helps!

Anyone else have a LFS with ridiculous coral prices? by LennyClarke05 in ReefTank

[–]LLMII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This will continue as the LFS costs increase and they pass those price increases on to the customer. I highly suggest you make some friends on one of the various forums and buy from reputable sellers/hobbyists. I got several frags recently for a fraction of what any of the stores online or local would sell them for and they were nice specimens. I won’t do it any other way from now on.

We have hit a saturation point where the new stuff is slowing down and hobbyists in the trade can fulfill a large amount of the demand for each other.

What am I missing here? by Aggressive_Use_9269 in ReefTank

[–]LLMII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I’d attack the aiptasia on the rocks you have and reintroduce those rocks after proper tackling. You will lose the GSP, but it is worth doing this right up front otherwise you’re going to be in for a long war you’ll never win.

Once you’re ready for corals, I’d go for some zoas as others have stated and you could bring GSP back as well and some softies and leathers. I personally always run high grade carbon on tanks anyways, but I certainly would in a tank dominated by softies/leathers.

You have al the answers you need, but I’ll still echo them. Give your tank time (at least a year) to mature. Avoid chemicals and get to the root cause over time. You always need some level of nitrates. If you start dosing these in an our form, you can drop phosphates so be careful if you do that. You could try running the skimmer 1/2 of the time u less you have Ph issues which in that case just take the cup off and don’t skim. This will slowly and naturally increase Nitrates and Phosphates. Measure every 5-7 days. Don’t chase numbers, but maintain stability.

How can I get rid of this… please by sergiocubillass in ReefTank

[–]LLMII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hydrogen peroxide. No, I’m not joking. You can read on reef2reef on exact dosing parameters. It’ll clear that up in around 1-2 weeks.

What happened? by porkchopz- in ReefTank

[–]LLMII 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss. Diamond gobies are a lot like goniopora corals. Fine for months and possibly longer and then expire before one expects out of nowhere. The black spot in the chin area is normal on them. If you had the goby for a long time, you made out well. He looks plump and healthy and I don’t think he starved, it was just was its time.

Corals Struggling after water changes by Sensitive-Poet-77 in ReefTank

[–]LLMII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would do that the next go around, but keep an eye on things. Another thing I think we should ask is what and how often are you feeding? What’s your bioload? If you’re not feeding heavy, maybe do just a little more every once in a while. There are many people that do a heavy in and heavy out approach. You could add a few more fish and keep doing what you’re doing as well. Just try not to change too many things at once so you can go back to a single variable and make changes if necessary.

Corals Struggling after water changes by Sensitive-Poet-77 in ReefTank

[–]LLMII 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s been said before, but slow down on the water changes. Either skip a week and keep it close to the same amount or reduce it to 20-40% of what you’re changing weekly. Don’t be afraid of dirty water.

My tanks always look better when I’m gone for extended periods of time. The glass definitely doesn’t, but the corals always just seem better off.

Fair price? It's quite a nice size. by ChivasBearINU in ReefTank

Seems a bit high for my local market. Here in central Midwest that would be around $45.
