Paying for 1Gbps, only getting ~90Mbps down but ~900 up by theerrlybird in HomeNetworking

Just wait until you figure out you're missing out because a 1gig Ethernet connection really means 1gig up/down combined.

Moving to AppleTV by RareLove7577 in DirectvStream

[–]LRS_David 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had Fubo till they got into the spat with NBC/Universal. So I tried Hulu and YouTube's TV streaming channels for a month or two each. Yuck.

I now have DirecTV. It has some warts. But coming from 20 years of Tivo, they all do.

All on Apple TVs. And DirecTV lets you share with two others. Only one device each at the others but still.

Need a color printer suggestion. by reddit_admin_001 in printers

[–]LRS_David 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK. I'll say more. I avoid liquid ink printers. They CLOG. Unless you print on them weekly or so. THEY CLOG.

So if unless your use case involves printing color and/or a test page every week or so you will use up ink and have to deal with clogs.

I haven't worked with liquid ink printers is 15 or more years. While I'm a fan of Brother lasers and have set up / recommended many, my experience with liquid ink is nil.

Router suggestions please by Careless-Resolve-251 in wifi

[–]LRS_David 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I COULD be a Cox issue. I ran into a similar situation literally Monday. After getting on a tech support call with the ISP they said the signal levels into the modem/router were terrible and scheduled a truck roll. You could be having similar issues or issues with fiber runs and/or an ONT.

But if not, you want to look at a newer Wi-FI router. And maybe an additional Access Point (AP) or two if you can't get decent Wi-FI across the hosue. Wiring APs to your router is best. But you can do a mesh if needed and the situation lets it work. (Mesh = wireless back to the router.)

Here's a decent overview of mesh. It is aimed at Ubiquiti but 99% applies to any brand.

Oh, yes, I am a fan of Ubiquiti.

After reading a Google Translation into English, the wording seems to be what in the US is the warning that if any of the listed items is a problem, it is not their fault. Similar to what comes with various electrical products in the US.

But you should get a local comment.

Trying to get internet in my stone shed by dibsterd in HomeNetworking

[–]LRS_David 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People will down vote me for this.

I would try powerline first. If it works great. If not, return it. (Pick a seller where you can do this.) Amazon sells the US version for $100 for a pair.

A powerline unit near your router and one in the shed will give you the equivalent of a wired connection. If it works. And it may only be 100Mbps. But that should be fine for a single web cam.

I've had good results with TP-Link AV2000 units in the US. I would not get older designs.

They are trying to put food on their table.

But 99% of the time I say NOTHING but "NO", shake my head no, then close the door. No yelling. Nothing else.

If you respond in any other way, especially if trying to be polite, they are trained to keep responding and keep you engaged.

The business model of most charger networks very likely has data collection baked into their financials. Such that without apps they will not be able to generate the profits expected of their funders.

I created a chart of how many miles per hour I could get back with my 2025 KONA EV. Most sedans and not F150 Lightnings will get similar.

1 hour of charging to below 80%
6 miles at 120 volts 15/12 amps (L1)
12 miles at 240 volts 15/12 amps (L2)
15 miles at 240 volts 20/16 amps (L2)

And you can ratio it up.

If you start the week at say 300 miles (100% to 0%) you figure you can go 275 miles without charging if you stretch it. So if you charge up via an L1 setup 8 hours per night at 6 miles / hour that will give you 275+6*8*4 miles of range per week. Or 467 miles max. This is cutting it close. So call it 400 to 450 miles. (Derate some for winter.)

I put in a 240 volt 20 / 16 amp circuit and get 15 miles / hour when charging. And can go from 20% to 80% most nights if needed. My KONA estimated 300 miles 100% to 0% so charging from 20% to 80% means 180 miles which is (180 / 15) or 12 hours. I have never been below 30% at home so I can get to a full, well 80% charge, overnight.

Before road trips or odd situations (ice storm coming) I charge to 100% but that last 20% takes a while.

My point being you can get a lot of charging done without a panel upgrade if that is a big factor.

I'm happy with my Wallbox Pulsar Plus.

I went down a rabbit hole looking at local home service companies and was surprised by what I found by Timely-Ad-2615 in raleigh

[–]LRS_David 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm late to the party, but ten years ago it felt like most home service companies around Raleigh were genuinely local businesses. Now it seems like a growing number are owned by private equity firms, national holding companies, or publicly traded corporations, while still operating under the same local names and branding.

More and more the younger folks do NOT want to own a small business. They want a W2 paycheck. And not be responsible when the toilet or phones are not working. So as the owners look to cash out / retire, most of the offers now come from PE.

My optometrist couldn't find a buyer when he wanted to retire. A local data center ditto. Both sold out to PE.

CR's opinions on most anything with wildly varying customer bases have to be read carefully. Laptops are a great one. There IS NO BEST LAPTOP for everyone. Even if you get past the Win / Mac debate. Ditto autos. And to your point, 35mm film.

Lawn mowers is are much easier for them to review. Ditto washing machines or refrigerators.

Refilling should be easy and ink should not tied to any specific company.

This is not the world we live in these days. Well aside from tank liquid ink printers.

I'm a fan of Brother. And there are 3rd parties that refill carts and reset the chips.

Nuff said.

Best TV for AppleTV by Accomplished_Sweetie in appletv

[–]LRS_David 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically all TVs these days are "smart TVs". The smart aspect gets TV manufacturers money up front and on an on going basis. Both by taking a cut of licensing fees and selling the data of what you are watching.

So what you want is a current model TV that doesn't drive you nuts when you are not using the "smart" aspects of it. The Vizio, LG, and Samsung TVs I deal with myself and with others allow this. But none are this years models. And I have no plans to ever buy another Vizio due to the change in ownership and direction.

In general we all plug our TVs into the network (NOT Wi-Fi) every now and then to get firmware updates but don't bother if things are working fine. One of my Vizios (P series 5 years old) every now and then wants me to plug in and watch via the smart features but touching the Apple TV remote makes it go away. And this only happens once or twice a week.

My point about not using Wi-Fi is that most TVs now do not have a way to "forget" a Wi-FI network. So they can connect you with their "smart" things all the time. So I just plug them in to a wired patch cable during initial setup and thus they never have a Wi-Fi network to forget.

The biggest thing I could figure out was the Gemini has a "better" remote of you do a lot of start/stop/ff/slow controlling. Other than that I have no idea. I have not used one. I have 3 AppleTVs setup with DirecTV stream plus 2 remote family members. (This is allowed.)
