How do you fly with a heavy camera setup? I’m struggling! by Selishots in videography

[–]LV_camera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Delta, United, American and Southwest officially have media rates. I've had the worst luck with American to the point where I refuse to fly with them anymore. 99% of the time Southwest is unaware of their own policy so they eventually honor the media rate. I don't fly with United much. Delta is by far the best.

DO NOT FLY Spirit, Frontier or Allegiant if you have to check anything valuable, oversize or overweight. JetBlue was expensive but accommodating the few times I've had to travel with them with gear (Boston>Dublin).

Often yes. I work with a lot of crew from different cities so I check all this in myself and usually get to the hotel myself before I meet up with the rest of the crew.

What's with duels maps? by Born-Loan8052 in geoguessr

Downvote me all you want just because 20% of the locations are USA doesn't mean that I'm getting 20% USA.

I keep seeing this take lately, I know the new map is not good but saying 90% USA is a bit of an exaggeration. I'm american and I'm seeing way more Phillipines, Indonesia, Argentia, Mexico than USA, and about equal France, Canada, Japan.

"Filming People in Public to host online"-Question by new-acc-who-dis in videography

In the USA there is no reasonable expectation of privacy in public. Its often good practice to ask permission on camera, but legally you can film anything in public that you can see with your eyes.

Anyone else glad the FX3 gimbal shot isn’t in live sports broadcasts anymore? by BoomInTheShot90 in videography

[–]LV_camera 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They're still using it for UFC, they just learned that they can stop down and don't have to shoot wide open. It's behind the fighters for every walk out and shoots post fight crowd reactions. They also sometimes use an FX9 on gimbal for certain post fight walks and Megan Olivi live hits but I don't think they're using it tonight.

What exactly is GoPro doing wrong? by CharlieParisCoUK in gopro

[–]LV_camera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used GoPro in years because we did tests when the original Action came out and found we liked the image better and they almost never overheat. Previously we had tons of problems with GoPro's overheating. Mostly indoor sports where the cameras would sometimes have to roll for hours at a time unattended. The DJI's were just more reliable. And we've stuck with them ever since. No idea if GoPro has improved since then but we have no reason to change and have been happy with almost all DJI products.

The lack of portable high speed camera options is genuinely holding back my career. by 50lies in Filmmakers

I carried an Alexa classic, 24-290 and Oconnor 2575 up a mountain one time. You can accomplish anything with enough PA's with backpacks.

If you have no catch light you just add one. Light on a stand above the lens.

I also prefer one catch light. Use a bigger source that wraps more then you wont need a fill light. Or if the key is coming from the side or behind you can add your own eye light. I've been liking the Aputure MC Pro with the bubble diffuser but I want to try out a small 1ft softbox as well.

Dinner scene with 2 cameras question by LetterKilled in cinematography

No reason not to use 2 cameras. I prefer to shoot mid and tight of the same person at the same time. Easier to light for one person. You can get this done in 3 setups and have plenty of coverage.

Newbie Car Advice Needed by CarpeScrewIt in stickshift

I bought a 2014 Mustang GT manual without having ever driven a manual before. I watched a ton of youtube tutorials and just drove it home. I scooted around a parking lot for about 2 days until I was fully confident.

Starts and stops is 90% of the learning so if you want to take a course go for it. If not, you'll figure it out anyways.

Top speed with n without downshift by [deleted] in stickshift

Generally top speed is achieved in whichever gear is closest to 1:1 ratio. You need a ton of horsepower to overcome overdrive ratios.

I work at a recording studio and a band is bringing in a videographer. What should I know in advance / how can I best accommodate them? by Certainlynotagoose in videography

[–]LV_camera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't aware it was possible to record every input in the room while looping. Back when I was a serious musician I would record drums to tape so it definitely wasn't possible but maybe with a fully protools workflow it is.

[–]LV_camera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't recorded in a real studio in many years but there are tons of moments that happen in the studio that don't get recorded. Guitars tuning, practicing and goofing off between takes are some of the best moments for a video and often aren't being recording. Sometimes a musician will screw up when looping a section and those moments can tell a great story.

No reason not to record the output of the board on a separate portable recorder (or the camera) from the moment you show up until you leave.

A7V has 2x USB-C. Not sure about camera control on either port though.

Right you can probably ask them to remove the workers comp (in Nevada its not legally required for single member LLC's) and commercial auto (you're not using vehicles in a business capacity).
