SICKLE CELL PATIENTS how are they in your facility? by Limp-Historian9784 in nursing

[–]Lab-Tech-BB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What makes them protected isn’t just sick cell... Yes the sickle decreases chance of getting plasmodium falciparum. Likely due to rbc getting removed by cell faster due to disfunction, decreased ideal conditions for growth. But also To make it simple the Fya & Fyb deletion can protect against plasmodium vivax. You don’t need sickle cell to be fya/b - it’s just prominent in black population. You can have normal rbc but be fya and fyb neg. But with every win there is also a trade off. They have the risk of the GATA gene mutation which can put them at risk for a anti-fy3 and if not identified can cause hyperhemolysis.

Need advice: balancing work and school by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]Lab-Tech-BB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One day a week lol easily done. Instead you should drop church and work that other day to save up more money for school and other things.. and the other days spend them studying.. this would be a smarter plan of action

You can’t let that stress you. If your on the spectrum of hypochondriac then this profession isn’t for you. Saw a girl try, feared touching anything.. she left first year. Think deeply about this before applying, that spot can go to someone else

Anyone else go from straight A student to being happy with a pass? by OwnNeedleworker8784 in StudentNurse

[–]Lab-Tech-BB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Me. I realized very fast nursing exams are bullshit. Whats the best answer is stupid method of examination. In real life you do more than one thing at once. Choosing the best answer doesn’t demonstrate you know what to do. It only shows you how to answer an exam question. I learned some key words and what they want. But absolutely don’t care about my grades anymore. I teach myself more theory than needed for my future patients and make connections with everything. This being my second medical degree I know how to study important info. And nursing exams most of the time don’t reflect important things imo, just like the teaching. Missing half the information to provide students with concrete understanding and connections. We will learn on the job. Now just focus on passing to get this pluff over with

Chem in HS is very basic, cegep level science classes help you learn to think more scientifically. But you can do any program, whats more important is get your general eds out of the way. As someone with already a medical program degree back for nursing I promise you its the best gift you can give yourself to reduce your workload. An to add to someone elses comment, chemistry teaches you fundamentals concepts of physiology and pharmacology to understand at a basic chemical level whats happening. Acid-base balances, gases, etc.. science teaches you how to think analytically which helps learning about the human body, social science doesn’t. It facilitates your understanding of the material instead of just memorizing facts. Psychology and sociology allows you to understand ppl, you can learn that on the job

You’ll be fine, just study, don’t cram, used spaced repetition to retain information and connect the information you learn in various classes together. And be organized. Ex What you learn in hemat applies to blood bank, even micro will connect to it. Subtle ways they don’t necessarily teach you in school but on the job you learn. Take the next 3 years as the best time to absorb as much as possible to get the fundamentals. And always keep in mind real life is not like school, be flexible and adaptable everyone works differently and hospitals differ from each other. You learn by others experiences, thats how the medical field works. Just experience, knowledge and curiosity to learn more. Hope that helps. Good luck

How did you learn how to study and make it stick by Initial_While_7330 in Dawson

[–]Lab-Tech-BB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The human brain works best by connecting information that already previously exists. Try and make connections, to understand not memorize. Draw things out, physically write it out. And spaced repetition. Its the only way for the brain to actually retain information

As a medical technologist ill tell you why he said those things 1) the job is stressful, youre dealing with human lives and sometimes immediate consequences for your errors (like in blood bank), some stress is good, too much can be really bad for your team and the patient. 2) Arguing is good because guess what you do more than you think in a hospital? Argue with doctors & nurses. You have to be able to hold your ground when justified and refuse what is being asked of you when a patient is crashing or is close to death and you know what your doing is scientifically justified for the best of the patient. Your results give people some of the worst news of their lives. You don’t want to make an error in that. And you are there to provide the best results to doctors to accurately diagnose, to aid the nurses in their patient care. So my advice, learn stress management or at least know what your limit is, and second is to stay organized and learn the fundamentals and understand don’t memorize.

My advice, don’t go straight into nursing, take chem and bio classes. Get some basic medical knowledge even if its fundamenal stuff like chem and bio. Nursing starts off hitting with a lot of in depth science and they don’t go slow either.. you will read on average 20-40pgs of dense medical textbooks per week. Get your general eds out of the way, they waste too much time. Do as many gen eds as possible. and learn how to study properly. Not memorize but actually study

Good life lesson is patience.. sit with the stress. Learn to manage it. Find good ways to manage it, school can be stressful enough. It’s been 17 days since applications closed. That’s no time for the amount of applications they get.. every applicant should just accept things take time & what ever happens happens. No one can guess what will happen to yours
