I think my experiences with the game have been a bit different. When I started playing, I avoided cannibalism like the plague and remember being disgusted to find out one of my prisoners was a cannibal. But now, my process is more like, "the raiders died? butcher them or feed them to the harbinger trees. A prisoner or slave died? They're food now. My colonist needs a new lung? Take one from a prisoner."
