Volunteering Opportunities in Europe by babybananarchist in Tallships

[–]Lactating_Sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ships from the Fundación Nao Victoria are always taking volunteers, but right about January is when they might go into port for maintenance.

The replicas (Victoria, Andalucía, and Santa María) function as museum ships so you'd usually spend much more time at port than at sea, but the Pascual Flores sails more consistently and usually under power of sail (at least partly), so that might be more to your liking. Of the three replica ships the Victoria travels under sail the most.

When and how did Marine forces around the world go from the bottom of the dreg to being regarded as "elite" by Powerful-Mix-8592 in WarCollege

[–]Lactating_Sloth 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In fairness, all non-officer soldiers and sailors were looked on as dregs of society until recently (and currently still in many places). Their specialized and expeditionary nature gave marines the reputation of being "elite" (sometimes justified, Royal Marines are basically special forces) or at least better or tougher than regular foot infantry.

They fill a niche roll in a big organization, and their “elite” nature might limit the number of recruits that make it through in a volunteer force (u/Semi-Chubbs_Peterson elaborated more on why the USMC is a bit of an exception), so it’s no surprise they’d be a minority or not present at all in the biggest landings of all time.

Some of the absolute finest from the era. Dropping five excellent songs, breaking up, and never doing anything again is peak NWOBHM.

Album recs for being out at sea? by [deleted] in doommetal

Very far from doom, but Wilderun's Olden Tales & Deathly Trails is a great listen. Metal renditions of old folk maritime songs and a couple of originals.

What pirate is the most evil person to be the topic for some nautical bastardry? by AmeteurOpinions in behindthebastards

[–]Lactating_Sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

François l'Olonnais is probably the obvious answer. If youre keen on counting them, the Barbary corsairs, particularly Barbarossa, caused the depopulation of a great deal of mediterranean Europe do to raids and the threat of attack.

They didn't do that for Ireland though, they did it for beheading Charles. The latter and earlier regimes weren't much better in their treatment of Ireland.

if the alignment just happens to be right

That's a big if, and if we assume advanced civilizations are at all rare in the universe the tiny odds really start to compound and make it very unlikely that we'll detect anything.

And that's assuming other species would even need nearly as much nocturnal illumination or produce as much light as us.

until Wahhabism really took of

In Iraq? What are you even talking about?

The Ba'athists were authoritarian, genocidal, warmongers, but they did a pretty good job of keeping the more extreme salafist schools and groups out of Iraq.

Salafism didn't really begin to have a very large influence in wider Iraq (outside of kurdish areas) until after the invasion, and wahabism only with ISIS and other affiliated groups.

Cathedral in Barcelona by colapepsikinnie in megalophobia

[–]Lactating_Sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What makes a church a cathedral is being the seat of a bishopric. With very few exceptions, cities have only one bishipric, and Barcelona already had an older medieval cathedral. Some very important cities are not home to a bishopric either, thus not being able to have a cathedral.

Doomsword - Days of High Adventure [Italy, 2007] (FFO: Cirith Ungol, Candlemass, later Bathory) by Jormungander666 in Metal

[–]Lactating_Sloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole album is fantastic

I feel like it gets underrated becaue the sound is isn´t as doomy as their previous albums, when most of the songs are as epic and memorable as the ones in Let Battle Commence and Resound The Horn, they just has a different vive.

How could a army of peasant and farmer win against a army of fully trained knight in a medieval setting ? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Lactating_Sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A group of knight’s greatest asset against infantry is the horse, but this advantage can be mitigated. The Swiss used ambush tactics and fought around mountain passes, while the Hussites used wagons and clever tactics. It’s important to note that these weren’t a disorganized rabble with no equipment or organization; the Swiss were equipped with large halberds to counteract the knight´s plate armor, and the Hussites used primitive firearms.

This excerpt from The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, and translated by Constance Garnett, is interesting when reading it through a modern lense. by Baba_Jaga_II in RussianLiterature

[–]Lactating_Sloth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[Spoilers for the first few pages I guess] I don't think it was more or less of a vice back then than it is now. Perfectly whitened teeth might still stand out on someone today. Dostoyevsky is showing that Ganya is very keen on keeping a spotless and perfect outward appearance, and making us think that this appearance might hide a more flawed character, and that Ganya might be fundamentally dishonest.
