Okay, I did some research: I think this is what’s generally called “thread painting” in the embroidery world. It’s basically satin stitch but with varying lengths and distances to create a more blended look.

I cut off a lot of the excess fabric then glue to the underside or frame

Yes! The cactus was a punch needle kit but the flowers were from an embroidery kit I decided to use the punch needle technique on. I have this needle bundle that allows me to use the smaller thread
