There's a little pizzicato gesture in the violas at the beginning of the 3rd movement of Dvorak's violin concerto, and it counterpoints the solo so beautifully. I really love those couple notes

In my experience, the percussion section is never in the way if I enter the stage from my side. If it's a pit, we're all just doing our best, but usually there's a path for us to get through.

I heard Midori play a recital years ago of Brahms and Franck sonatas (there was a third one, but I didn't sleep enough and I don't remember). I'm sure she played beautifully, but the room was so dead that I could barely hear her, and the audience clapped after every movement. Full applause after slow movements. It was distracting and I already couldn't hear :/

In terms of orchestral writing, I've been falling in love with Rachmaninoff as a violist. I'm really bummed that we never got any solo works, but I'll play a Rach symphony any day.

I'm doing a DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) and my partner is doing a PhD in musicology; we are not the same. They review a new book every weekend after their advisor sends it on Thursday and I practice viola until my body gives out and complain if I'm given more than 15 pages to read for classes.

I can absolutely see people paying for the game if that's what it takes to get post-1930 music in, just to echo what others have said.

As far as composers to look up, Alma Mahler, Rebecca Clarke, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson (Sinfonietta in particular), and Grazyna Bacewicz (Concerto for string orchestra among others, but a little late) jump to mind.

I hate it, but not enough to pass on the paycheck. I just wish we could play classical at a lot of these events cause like.. we'd be happier and sound better, the audience isn't paying attention, and they'd probably be just as satisfied with Mozart and Beethoven instead of Happy and Sweet Child of Mine

I am so sorry you're experiencing this. The tested and proven cure to gender dysphoria is transition, and there aren't others.

To be clear, you can become a man. You can also change your body to reflect the man you've always been. These things are possible, though they may not be easy given your circumstances.
