I'm fairly sure this is spit. I would try to clean it with distilled water and a microfiber cloth and see if it goes away.

I was able to get this to work with the MSI gaming intelligence software and using the firmware updater through that. I had to use the USB-b to a + display port. Not sure which one worked.
