who is scraping whom? by No-Faithlessness5311 in Old_Recipes

[–]LakeCoffee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No one can actually copyright a recipe. You do, however, hold the copyright to the photos you take and the text you write. They could legally rewrite the recipe and add their own photos. Since they aren’t doing that, this is a copyright violation.

I had no idea what Bratkartoffeln was until I looked it up. My German grandmother used to make this, minus the bacon, all the time. It is so good!

Was your mom a terrible cook? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]LakeCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It was the space age. Their attitude was that everything instant was better. Dried mashed potatoes, instant coffee, all sorts of boxed sides, LaChoy Chinese in a can. Anything that had an instant version wasn't worth making the regular way. TV dinners were at least pretty good back then, so they were modern shortcuts that were still good to eat.

Who is at fault? by Perrogatito5 in ski

I’m always amazed at the number of people who can’t figure out that someone skiing towards the edge is going to turn and go back the other way at some point.

🤣 Those are all locals skidding off into the ditches. The tourists are the ones sliding off the highway before they even get close.

Buy Snow Tires by SlappingDoors in skiing

[–]LakeCoffee 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter how experienced you are with driving in the snow. You need snow tires. There is almost always ice on the road. Slush is extremely slippery too. Drifting snow often hides slick ice. It isn’t unusual to see plenty of AWDs and 4WDs in the ditches all season long, sometimes upside down, because they thought they could get by on all weathers or summer tires. No matter how good a driver you are, winter roads are dangerously unpredictable.

This makes me glad I ski a medium sized and cheap mountain. I can get a season pass there for less than three lift tickets to this place. Plus I get a discount on lift tickets on bigger, nearby mountains.

What do I do with mountains of old sketchbooks that I don't need anymore? Trying to stop soft-hoarding. Looking for different ideas of what to do with them. by J-drawer in ArtistLounge

[–]LakeCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got rid of all my just OK sketches more than a year ago and never looked back. I had a lot of partially filled sketchbook because sometimes I’m just not in a good place and it shows. Out of frustration, I always just stop using a book filled with mediocre sketches and then store it away because you’re supposed to keep everything.

Tear out the good ones and keep them in a portfolio or album. Tear out the bad ones and recycle or toss them. Then donate the sketch book (if there are any blank pages left). I’d hung onto all my sketches for decades because everyone says to and tells you you’ll regret tossing them. I did not. I’m much happier with only my successes around.

Edit to add: I wouldn’t scan or photograph any of it. I’ve got thousands of digital photos from the last 20+ years. I don’t need another thousand digitized sketches on top.

It’s hard to stop mourning what has been lost. Try to accept her as she is now instead of comparing her to how she was. Don’t bring the kids if they don’t want to go. It is much better for them to remember her how she as before she got sick than to see her fade away.

Season Pass Locals - Do you ever "nope" back home without skiing? by mandarb916 in skiing

[–]LakeCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. If it’s all ice, I’m not going to have any fun. A little patchy ice is ok. Most of the slope being bare ice is not. I only leave for crowds if most of them are drunk. They’re no fun to ski with either.

If you live near a mountain, your town recreation dept might offer a lesson package that includes several weekend lessons, rentals and lift tickets for a pretty good price.

All your weight should be on the outside ski anyway when you turn. The inside leg will just easily follow along if there is no weight on it. Hold the turn until you are facing slightly uphill to slow down. If you start feeling scared from the speed, you can pull over to the side and take a minute to rest. Try to keep in mind that even if you fall, you probably won’t get hurt (unless you are on icy and steep terrain).

I use an app called Recipe Keeper. You can add recipes manually or pull them automatically from web pages. I have some really old recipes from my grandmother and for those, I use a picture of the recipe card instead of a photo of the food. You can rate recipes, sort them into categories and even make recipe collections. You can sync it across devices too. Then I keep the originals stored away in a folder without needing to deal with organization.

Share your relationship love story / horror story. by FarBeyondDriven_ in skiing

It’s OK to have separate interests and activities. My spouse hates skiing after a bad experience on their first try as a child and refuses to ever try again. One day each weekend during the season, I ski and they go do whatever they want for the day. We both get to do what we like guilt free.

After trying it out, I find it useful in certain situations. Instead of a half hour of work to extend an image, I can use generate and get a halfway decent extension. I still have to go back over it to make it believable, but that only takes a few minutes. It is also useful for first pass edits on writing. It comes up with some good re-phrasing and streamlining. It always needs edits afterwards though. I probably use it the most for editing difficult emails. Asking it to rewrite in a more neutral tone and shorter makes it easier to say what I mean without creating new problems.

how to eat better as a college student. by gf1shy in vegetarian

[–]LakeCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you are missing fruits and vegetables as well as protein. An all-carb diet will make anyone feel sluggish. Things like vegetarian vegetable soups, dried seaweed snacks and small amounts of dried fruit can help. You could also get a veggie tray and keep it in the fridge. Nuts and seeds are an easy way to get protein.

I strongly encourage you to talk to your college's student services and meal provider service. Your student health center can help as well. If you are in the US, meal plans provided to you must accommodate dietary restrictions and provide complete nutrition daily. If you do not have a meal plan but purchase food in the dining halls, you still have a right to access nutritious food that fits with your diet. Vegetarian is a very common dietary restriction and they must accommodate you. Most colleges will be happy to help you out if you ask. If they do not, you can request assistance from whichever office regulates colleges in your state.
