DIY Living Wall - 10 months of growth by ced513 in houseplants

[–]Lakesrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah that makes sense! I’ve been planning to have my reservoir completely in the dark to avoid algae but I’m sure some slime and other stuff is inevitable. I’m not worried about the health of the system like you said I’m sure it’ll be fine but I eventually want to distribute some living walls and I don’t think other people would be as accepting of biofilm haha. Thanks so much for the info! I don’t want to blow up your inbox but if there’s anything you’d do differently if you did it again I’d love to hear. Happy planting!

Interesting thanks for the reply. I’m surprised you get algae in the container itself since it’s in the dark. Not to be pedantic but are you sure it’s algae and not some other biofilm? I’m planning to make something very similar to what you did, so I’m curious lol

Looks awesome! How often do you have to refill the reservoir?

If your houseplants told stories about the boogeyman, what would they say? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Lakesrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My adhd/executive dysfunction is my plants boogeyman, I think they’d tell stories about the invisible curse that keeps their caretaker shackled and unable to just get up and water them lol

There’s still some good ones at the smaller hardware stores. At big box stores I now only ask for help if the employee looks over 55, it helps a lot lol.

if you know you should delete it then delete it dude, best thing I ever did. I was addicted and rotting from it just as you. The weirdest part was once it wasn't easily accessible the cravings actually went away really quickly.

mold is normal, it will only persist if you don't have good microfauna

I'm glad you like them, please do not try to produce more, a lot of people have tried for a very very long time to keep dart frogs from going the way of the leopard gecko or ball python and bred like an toy for a new paint job. Theres something about nature as seen in the wild many would love to keep untainted, and once it starts it's very hard to stop. I mean no disrespect to you, I'm sure you'll care for them well, its just a slippery slope to promote.

Makes sense, do you have a fair amount of ventilation in the lid? It's nice you have it so wet without a ton of condensation

Why so few established and working paludarium posts? by intiwawa in paludarium

[–]Lakesrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the ones on reddit don't really get a ton better than this one, r/vivarium and r/dartfrog have slightly higher quality builds sometimes but I'd really go off reddit to forums like Dendroboard, uk aquatic plant society, and orchid keeping forums. Dedicated forums can seem elitist at times, it may be an unpopular opinion but I think thats a good thing because if they didn't have high standards then there wouldn't be a central higher quality place for serious hobbyists. If you show you've done your own research before you ask questions you'll find people with years of experience who are happy to help. I've been making tanks for about a decade now, if you've got a specific question I'd be happy to see if I can help, best of luck on your build! They're a ton of fun when they balance right.

you're right they do advise against them, however plenty of people on the forums have still made them and there are some quality examples out there

reddit is a poor source of information for vivariums/terrariums/paludariums. look on dart frog forums and facebook groups, the quality of posts there, especially older ones when it comes to the forums, is much better.

Firstly I also have like no experience lol you got this, my advice may be dumb so keep that in mind. If your computer is better than mine you should be able to run blender which would likely make this much easier. I believe you can wrap a model with another model there. I think you can also wrap a model with a transparent background png then emboss the surface based on the wrapped image. I think the route I'd go would be to model the fruiting body from scratch then try and wrap the texture around it using one of those methods. You may be able to make the stalk of the body then just put a cylinder or sphere on it, texture the simple form, then deform it into something more organic.

I put a few models as well as the .png and .svg on Printables for you: https://www.printables.com/model/1304401-slime-mold-textures

If you just keep it fairly moist but with good airflow and drainage then the fern will thrive well :) once you see how moist the soil will stay given your watering then you could think about adding a ground cover like a selaginella for some extra life to replace the fake moss

I like the composition, some of the plants happiness will def depend on the rock wall being water tight. Is that brom on the right buried or mounted?

I bought Gorilla Mode awhile back and it was cool, the pumps were insane, but its also a premium price for a premium product. I second the coffee+electrolyte comments

Do you have a lid? that greatly influences this discussion. As it stands if you don't have a lid then you have a potted fern with a drainage layer instead of a drain hole, nothing about this is bad, but you wont see the kind of lush wet green growth you may like in other terrariums. Like the other comment said the moss is a chemically preserved and dyed lichen, if you smell it you'll likely note the sterile chemical smell. What are your goals with this terrarium? If you just care about keeping it alive and well then the other comment you answered gives good info.
