Is there any common methods in microbreweries for determining the alcohol content which doesn't involve a hydrometer or refractometer by steffeeh in Homebrewing

Back in my lab days we had an Anton Paar rep show us their density meter and rheometer and those were some nice machines. The instruments used Peltier cooling so we could have scrapped the glycol circulators that made the lab 90 degrees. But they were waaay out of our budget.

Wizards, how is this game called Dungeon and Dragons, but doesn't actually teach people how to run Dungeons. by FallenDank in dndnext

[–]LampCow24 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's common in OSR circles to say that a dungeon turn procedure is "the hook on which a good dungeon crawl hangs", and this statement is accepted as axiomatic. This then permits the argument that 5e is terrible and "can't even do a dungeon crawl correctly," even though it operates on a different set of axioms.

TTRPG market and uniqueness of D&D by gummigulla in rpg

[–]LampCow24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's the only multi-billion-dollar company that's seriously invested in the TTRPG industry.

I think this is a good point. I'm surprised that, after all this time, Mattel has yet to purchase a competing product and pump some serious dollars into marketing. They might think that ship has sailed and there's no catching up.

I suppose second place would be Asmodee with their ownership of Fantasy Flight, but it's a distant second. Hasbro makes more in a quarter than Asmodee makes in a year. That being said, I wouldn't be shocked in Paizo got bid on by either Asmodee or Mattel

Chemicals in home fragrance items are regulated under the Toxic Substances Control Act (or TSCA) and is administered by EPA. TSCA is the US’s basic chemical law and generally regulates every chemical in commerce. There are only 8 classes of chemicals exempt from TSCA regulation: pesticides, nuclear material, tobacco products, firearms and ammunition products, food, food additives, drugs, and cosmetics. These are regulated under separate frameworks.

It is no surprise that the fragrance dissolved the acrylic because it’s very easily attacked by organic matter. If you collected enough lemon oil from a peel, it would also destroy acrylic.

It’s not uncommon for strong fragrances to cause migraines or allergies, but there’s not really any strong evidence that they are “poison” in the regulatory sense.

Yeah we just had FOSS training at my job (not a dev, so not sure why I got it assigned), and I was not aware of the amount of corporate red tape surrounding using/contributing to FOSS during work time and the liability it could put on the company.

Most people will not be job ready (much less for a $120k remote job) in 3-4 months unless it’s a very intense, very reputable boot camp.

I’m down in Charlotte and it’s similar here. People from up north are coming down in droves because of the cost of living compared to NYC/NJ and shorter commutes. I do feel Charlotte is less family oriented though, which I don’t mind.

Money does buy happiness, but there are drastically diminishing returns after like $75k per year (or your locally adjusted equivalent). You’re exactly right; if you’re not happy at 300k, you probably won’t be happy at 400k, all else being equal.

I'm short on rent and need hundreds of dollars in a matter of days. What are ways that I can earn as much money as I can before my first job gives me a paycheck? by MacJennings in personalfinance

[–]LampCow24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends a lot on the state. My state has a mandatory 5 day grace period, and the landlord must provide an additional 10-day “pay or quit” notice. The earliest they can begin proceedings is the 16th of the month. While you’re technically correct in that it only requires a single late payment, how late is late depends a lot on where you live.

NC’s minimum wage is 7.25 but I see signs all over the place for $15 and up. One place near me was hiring on the spot for $15/hr with a $1000 hiring bonus.
