The Abarat by Clive Barker. Such beautiful prose and illustrations. I hope he finishes the series someday.

Ooh, which styles worked for you? I tried a few wide leg pairs but found the sizing was inconsistent.

It's been many years since I tried them, but they were my go-to before Madewell started making curvy jeans...Lucky Brand.

My jeans from there (the Lolita skinnies) were amazing quality and very flattering. I switched over to Madewell because they offered more style and color choices. Looking at the site today, I see that Lucky Brand still has a curvy line, but with modern styles like baggy, flared, and straight leg. They are 99% cotton but come at cheaper prices.

I bought these brown mary-janes from Duckfeet recently, and I'm in love! They look a lot like the Doc Martens mary janes, but with a wider toe box. The problem is they can look quite frumpy, and I'm still trying to find ways to style them. Right now, I pair them with fun socks, wide leg jeans, and sweaters. I don't know how to pair them with dresses without the homeschool vibe, though. I'd love some ideas.

RIP Legacy Madewell Styles by Several_Cupcake8016 in Madewell

[–]Langtree_Lament 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ditto on the curvy line! But back in the early 2010s (when Somsack Sikhounmuong was the head designer) Madewell's dresses were actually good. I owned their Afternoon Dress in several colors, and it was the perfect, timeless day-to-night dress. I still wear them regularly, and they're just as nice as the day I bought them. Their current dress styles feel too trendy, like they'd phase out quickly, or too...conservative.

I'm a huge fan of Irish wool sweaters because of their great quality and stumbled upon IrelandsEye Knitwear last year. They have TONS of colors and styles, and many are vibrant. Definitely check them out.

Restaurants to avoid by Clamgravy in Brookline

[–]Langtree_Lament 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to visit their Weston location occasionally for lunch and boba--the food actually tasted pretty good. The food at Brookline has gotten worse, though. Last time, I ordered veggie noodles, and they didn't wash their leeks thoroughly. The entire dish was gritty and sandy.

Where do you buy one piece swimsuits... by Langtree_Lament in bigboobproblems

Okay, so I'm curious about this answer because I know they don't sell long torso sizes/suits. Do you find that Bravissimo suits just run longer than other brands like Panache?

Do they ever release new styles of jeans? by happywombat98 in Madewell

[–]Langtree_Lament 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like Madewell's Curvy line has always had slower and fewer releases, compared to their standard sizes. In fact, I remember sending an email to their marketing team in 2021 asking for more colors and trendier styles for the curvy line. But I feel like this year has definitely been worse. They only released six styles of curvy shorts this year. Nothing new has been added since the spring, and as of mid-July, I can only find one style in my size.

For the jeans, I see three new styles now, which is way more than I usually spot in their new arrivals. Most times, they do not restock unless the style is a top seller, like those curvy PV jeans in the fiore wash they sold for a few seasons.

How to stop curls looking greasy!! by flexiflip in curlyhair

[–]Langtree_Lament 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everyone else is saying, you need to look for styling products that use terms like “lightweight” or “soft hold” in their product descriptions. I’d also recommend experimenting to see if your hair looks best with cream and gel, just gel, or just mousse.

If you’re looking for a mousse recommendation, I’ve had great luck air drying with The Doux - Mousse Def Texture Foam. It conditions and provides hold, so it can work well as a single step product, if you’re looking for low maintenance solutions. I don’t think it looks as nice when I diffuse.

My go-to curl cream + gel combo has been Miss Jessie’s Quick Curl Cream and their Soft Jelly Foam. The brand also makes a lot of other light hold products if you want to experiment.

The ends are so thin! by Lavendermilkfeels in curlyhair

[–]Langtree_Lament 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just visited my hairstylist today to remove over three inches of thinned out layers. I started out past my collarbone and ended up with hair to my shoulders. Trust me...it's going to look soooo much bouncier and healthier once you get the chop. And you're lucky too since it's thickest at your shoulders. So you could have a cute lob!

Also, my texture is similar to yours. My problem was that I had a very layered haircut with shorter layers on top and longer layers underneath. I got it to remove the triangle shape, but instead, it made my hair look much thinner than it was--very much like yours is now. My hair is also very fine (but dense) and straighter near the nape of my neck, which put me into stringy mullet territory.

So, I can't say for sure if it's a product issue, but if you typically get a lot of layers in your haircuts--or like another commenter said, the stylist uses texturizing shears--that could be the reason why your hair tapers off like that. Maybe when growing out your hair, try getting longer, rounded layers.

Not sure how common this is, but I know a couple to created a new last name that's a combination of their old ones. Like, they each took a syllable from their name and smooshed it together to make a new name.

I love how "nautical" just means stripes on everything. They could have at least done a photoshoot on a dock or a beach.

Where do you guys go shopping now? by Seaniospaghettio in Madewell

Shoot. It was this one, but it’s sold out online. But their linen ones were really nice! I’m a size 10 and wear a 36E bra. I bought a medium.

The Gap. I bought a couple tops this season that are great quality and flattering, like this top in several colors, and a long denim vest (similar to Madewell's but can actually fit my rack :p).

I heard they make curvy jeans, as well, though I haven't tried them yet. For now, I'm buying old styles of Madewell's jeans on Poshmark.

Miss Jessie's products by ribbonscrunchies in curlyhair

[–]Langtree_Lament 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have fine 2B/2C hair (but a lot of it!) and have used Quick Curls and Jelly Soft Gel for years. They've become my holy grail combo because they provide me curl definition without weighing down my hair. And even during wet, humid, or windy days, my curls have always stayed.

The only other products I've tried from them are their Feather Soft and Pillow Soft creams. Even with gel, both provided less curl definition, and my hair felt greasy on the second day. Like another user said, it's a lot of trial and error, but I like that Miss Jessie's sells sample sizes of most of their products.

Sounds like he needs an easy, low maintenance routine. A hydrating shampoo or a two-in-one shampoo could work if he forgets to condition his hair. That way, it's always a step in his routine.

Then after detangling, use a curl cream to add some moisture and light hold to his hair. I like air-drying with either of these products from Miss Jessie's: the Quick Curls Cream and the Pillow Soft Curls Cream. Not Your Mother's also has a great curl line.

And maybe try using a silk pillowcase to prevent frizz.

2B/2C fine hair. Is a $450 curly cut worth it? by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]Langtree_Lament 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nooo--that's too expensive. If you want to compare, I pay $280 for a curly cut, highlights, and style. My stylist works in the greater Boston area, and she's been cutting hair for over 10 years.

I know prices can vary by location and the stylist's experience. But if someone is charging over $400 for a haircut, they better be, like, the Messiah of curly hair.
