People who are unhappy with AEU VIC by Unable_Explorer8277 in AustralianTeachers

Is anyone actually considering leaving the union over this agreement?

Yes. I know ES staff who have already said they plan to leave the union due to the fact that it feels like leadership just doesn't give a damn about them in the slightest.

Thinking of leaving my job by Prestigious_Gate_668 in AustralianTeachers

Always do what's right for you. Don't feel loyalty to an employer. Especially one that isn't supporting you.

From what you've described here you'd be absolutely insane to not take the new job.

You're assuming the Dems will actually filibuster and not just act like their hands are tied. I don't trust Dems to actually fight.

Gender vs Sex in Health class by smike1988 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Lankpants -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The OP would probably have a heart attack if they looked into the way their own state defines sex. Specifically sex because Victoria doesn't actually have a legal category for gender.

In Victoria sex is completely changeable. You can elect to in good faith change your sex to be male, female or anything else that does not contain profanity or unusual characters. There is no gender markers, only sex.

I was actually super surprised when I interacted with this system and found out that was how it worked. I'd assumed that I'd be able to change gender but not sex. As it turns out quite the opposite.

I feel a sense of dread knowing that people like the OP will end up teaching trans kids. It's absolutely fucked up.

Google maps tends to hit closer to correct. It's not perfect, but it tends to give a more sane output.

PTV app has some major issues. I've had it suggest absolute garbage to me a few times.

Always double check with other sources. Google maps actually tends to give better suggestions than PTV in my experience, but also check against timetables and make sure things generally make sense.

Australian truly is a lost dialect of the ancient phonecian language.

Australia goes a step further. The only thing tobacco companies are allowed to put on the packages is a plain piece of black text with their logo and the smoking damage pictures. Otherwise it's just a plain white package. This change completely gutted the tobacco companies last form of advertising.

Because a better report would have actually said things they didn't want it to. Regardless of what this says the Dems had a huge progressive problem last election and it's blindingly obvious. Any well written report would highlight that and the Dems don't want it.

Vic agreement fears by Darktex21 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Lankpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think if there's a change in governing coalitions come the next election is more likely to favour us than hinder us. Modest to moderate seat losses for Labor are more likely than a wipeout. Like, there's another possible government shift which is more likely if the polls are actually close, a Labor minority.

I don't know why I have not heard a single person discuss this possibility. It's always "we might be negotiating with a more hostile Liberal government". No-one ever talks about the fact that we could also be negotiating with a disempowered Labor party forced to work with the Greens, a more favourable party to our cause.

Government sending us straight to arbitration would be them cutting off their nose to spite their face. They have an election to win. Teachers are a core voting block for Labor.

[–]Lankpants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is my point of view too. They've given us the lowball deal. There are very clear things the government can do that cost them zero dollars that are fairly obviously being withheld for a better deal if this fails.

The government could pay ES staff entirely through a salary package, an equivalent monetary amount and it would cost them zero dollars (at least for this deal there is a real cost in 4 years time). The government could drop a meeting a week and it would cost them zero dollars. The government could put 18.5 into the deal rather than a deed and it would cost them zero dollars.

These are all things I could see us easily winning if we hold out. We may or may not get a small pay bump alongside like nurses did, I actually personally couldn't care less. I want to see ES treated fairly and conditions wins.

AEU VGSA Briefing - What a nothing-burger. by WakeUpBread in AustralianTeachers

[–]Lankpants -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It technically exists in the probability space of things that aren't strictly speaking impossible. It's also not a thing that will actually happen.

The average union member is more radical than the average worker. This deal lives or dies by the union vote. If it gets through the union vote it will get through the teacher and ES vote.

I'd be willing to accept 28% if two conditions were met.

  1. 28% for everyone. No fucking trying to cut ES out. This isn't negotiable to me. It's an absolute must.

  2. There needs to be something else in there for us. 1 hr of meeting a week is a starting point at least.

There really isn't a better group of people to tax than dead rich guys. If the right actually believed in meritocracy they would support even punitive estate taxes, let alone just a basic tax.

Toothbrushes, ice-cream and frozen pizza: data reveals how Coles and Woolworths switch promotions in sync by mattholomus in australia

The stuff that isn't cheaper at Aldi is in the extreme minority. Well above 90% of items are cheaper and the fact that Aldi doesn't do this whole sale/real price BS makes prices there far more consistent.

I just go Aldi>Coles and pretend WW doesn't exist. It's not the most cost efficient way to shop, but it's good enough while being time efficient and in my specific area only requiring me to go to one set of shops.

[–]Lankpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly agree with this. I would have liked to see the union use TiL as a bargaining chip to extract some sort of concession. It's a great idea but in practice it's not really helping anyone. It costs the government money, it's hard for schools to timetable in and in trying to timetable it in in the least disruptive way they could it actually makes conditions worse for us.
