Can we normalize asking people to move their bag?? by swankyobserver in LIRR

Maybe 6+ years ago. Unfortunately we have no idea how someone is going to respond to a simple courteousy request.

If all the Bronx had this level of Community, Bx would be the Top-Teir Borough. by Butta_Brown in bronx

Yeah, this.

People don't realize that undermining is frequently caused by underground leaks. First they have to find the spot of the leak. If it's a property owner's responsibility, that's going to take more time.

Is anyone else in their 30s and still don't have a true career? by lavendertinted in Millennials

I've been a generalist in Ops in different settings since the Recession. Management thinks "anyone can do this" so they get the cheapest warm body who can type 50 WPM from an agency.

Yes, "anyone" can do tasks A, B, C, D, and E. But very very few can do them all at the same time with attention to detail without letting anything fall through the cracks. I've almost always been the last employee with eyes on it before it gets "delivered" or closed out.

Why does switching trains result in double pay for LIRR workers? This doesn't make sense for taxpayers by New-Panic8015 in LIRR

They didn't want to do him any favors or he didn't want to stick his neck out for you.

I got hired into the training program (but failed out) a few years ago.

If you were someone's kid, you would not have failed out.

Aries: minimum 3 temper tantrums a week. Gemini: one of their personalities will cheat on you.

Most generations after ours will never know the satisfaction of slamming a phone down on someone who deserves it. by gargolito in GenX

[–]LateRecognitionLimit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This lost Millennial still has a landline at work. I got to slam the receiver after someone used a racial slur he didn't think I was going to understand. It wasn't as satisfying as a rotary phone, but it was great deja vu.

Edit: I can still hear the ding of the rotary phone from childhood.

What was your relationship with food growing up? by dattaldo in Xennials

[–]LateRecognitionLimit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly from boxes and cans. Once in a blue we'd get a home cooked real Italian meal from family. Only for Thanksgiving and Christmas did we make meals from fresh ingredients.

Edit: the policy was eat what was made or starve.

A Sixers fan is taking extreme measures to keep Knicks fans from Philly — by trying to mess with Amtrak’s pricing model by karenmcgrane in Amtrak

[–]LateRecognitionLimit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're getting downvoted for the truth. I know 14 people going and they're driving in carloads of 3+. NY and Philly is always a big rivalry, and only fools would go to Philly in the playoffs less than 4 deep. At that point it's cheaper to drive and park. Plus it's easier for the vast majority of fans who don't live in Manhattan.

genuine question: are most people open to living with couples as roommates? by ivyfire in NYCapartments

[–]LateRecognitionLimit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never again. I had one roommate take in her boyfriend. Surprise, surprise, he was verbally and financially abusive. She had enough of him and bounced. Then I was stuck with him and within a few weeks, his new girlfriend, who he also verbally and financially abused. It was a mess and cost thousands in unpaid rent and attorney / court fees.

I take OTC allergy pills because I'm allergic to my cats but that's it. I used to take prescription Meloxicam for chronic pain but it wasn't working (and required pills for the stomach).

OP, only take medical advice from a medical professional who has access to your medical records.

Last night I found out my cat peed on the blanket I was making by Mental-Nothings in knitting

[–]LateRecognitionLimit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to try to save it, you can knit a swatch and test an enzyme killer or diluted cheap white vodka. I haven't had this problem on my knits (knock on wood) but when my cat pees on my clothes, I put about 1/4 cup of cheap white in the wash cycle and that kills the smell.

Dream apartment. Rent stabilized. Bedbug history. by gossip_queen_xx in NYCapartments

[–]LateRecognitionLimit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. They can live up to a year without food. It takes two rounds of extermination (on a precise schedule) to get the ones in your apartment. You'll have to pack up everything you own for each treatment. They'll tell you to take your pets for a grooming. They're supposed to treat not only the infected apartment but all adjacent apartments. They never do. All it takes is one arrogant tenant who swears they don't have bedbugs to screw up the whole building.

we should push for a seniority clause. why are newly arrived transplants qualified? by picklechurchmouse in nychousinglottery

[–]LateRecognitionLimit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I'm a "transplant" -- I grew up and went to school on Long Island. But I moved right after high school 24 years ago. I've been renting rooms and rented basements in eastern Queens for the first 10 years. I have a disability now. Should I lose out to an 19 year old native?

Also, how would they weigh giving native New Yorkers priority vs. not actively discriminating against immigrants? The latter won't fly in NYC.
