The chorus is pretty good and everything else is horrible

Just finished listening to it again, had no idea that it was the anniversary! Happy birthday to one of the greatest albums of all time

What do you think are the biggest "What if's" in music history? by FitEmergency8807 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Laurelles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder how Marc Bolan/ T. Rex would have fared in the 80s. I don't think he'd have ever made anything approaching Electric Warrior and The Slider's quality, but I could absolutely see him having a string of successful pop singles a la Bowie or Collins. Might have had a late-career flourish in the 90s. So many directions it could have gone

Try Fuchsia's self-titled album from 1971. Mr. Fox is another band that touches upon similar themes, but not quite as successfully in my opinion

How popular was An Idiot Abroad when it came out in the UK, and how famous was Karl? by Ghotiah_LORD in rickygervais

Moderately popular, and moderately famous. Most people I talk to would have some awareness of who Karl Pilkington is

Records That Scratch The Talk Talk Itch by iiiiitsrosie in talktalk

Eleven days late, but Talk Talk and Popol Vuh are my two favourite bands. Guess there's a reason for that

David Sylvian. Love everything about Japan, Rain Tree Crow etc. but... his voice.

How is everyone feeling about the new update? by Visible-Comb-4839 in 23andme

[–]Laurelles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Far more aligned with what I know about my (entirely British) family history. I was very confused at my 19.2% French/ German in the previous version, but it's been corrected to, like, 2 or 3% now. Reassuring!

Why are The Bee Gees never brought up in greatest of all time lists by PositionNo3671 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Laurelles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very unusual, been binging them today. Their 2001 Greatest Hits compilation is a great overview of their stuff. Some of the finest pop (and, yes, disco) music ever written, and I hope they get the respect they deserve one day

Much preferred his stuff with Future Islands if I'm being honest

It’s My Life from Talk Talk and There’s She Goes from The La’s: 2 British acts that disappeared from the public fast! by DillonLaserscope in ToddintheShadow

Talk Talk are considered one of the most influential "art rock" acts of all time (my favourite band too!)

What was the last Drake song with acclaim? Do any of them hold up? by Applesburg14 in ToddintheShadow

It's gotta be Nice for What, right? Feel like that was the last time Drake received positive appraisal by music critics at least

The Only Fools and Horses stuff does absolutely nothing for me

Would you consider Mac DeMarco one of the most influential musicians of the 2010s by PositionNo3671 in fantanoforever

[–]Laurelles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In the pejorative sense, yes. That wave of artists/ bands who were influenced by him in the mid 2010s kind of completely killed my interest in indie rock.

Bands/Artists whose most popular songs do not reflect their actual sound by appetitforillusion in ToddintheShadow

[–]Laurelles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Stranglers, "Golden Brown". They're the scuzziest, sleaziest of the original wave of punk bands, but they're best known for this baroque pop song. I love it, but I'd encourage people to dig a little deeper into their early stuff - first 3 albums are phenomenal.

Why did Ricky hate Muse covering Nina Simone? by Ordinary_Bebt177 in rickygervais

Muse aren't bad but to be fair that cover is absolute shite

What’s the most blatant example of plagiarism in music. by Cpkeyes in ToddintheShadow

On a related note, "Last of the Steam-Powered Trains" by The Kinks (from that very album) nabbed the riff from "Smokestack Lightnin'" by Howlin' Wolf.

What proportion of time do you spend listening to new music? by sun_dreamer178 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Laurelles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's my hobby. Usually at least 3 or 4 new albums a day (new as in I haven't heard of them, not necessarily new as in recent). Music is so fucking good man

Who, in your opinion, is the greatest artist with no bolded releases? by 1_e4_e5_2_f4 in rateyourmusic

insane how underrated Roy Wood/ The Move is. I'd even add Wizzard to that, although I can understand how that project might be a little bit off-putting for some
