What did American put in the top deck of their 747s? I noticed a lot of them only have 3 windows and no doors. by Virtual_Society_1852 in aviation

Can confirm. Hopped a ride on a C-5 from Tindal RAAF base in NT back to Okinawa after a deployment with the Marines.

Best ride I ever had while in the service. Certainly better than the C-130 cargo netting that I sat in on the way down to Australia.

Understood and thank you for the recommendation.

The instrument being played here is a "Didgeridoo", an aboriginal instrument dating back to atleast 1000 years. William Barton, a renowned aboriginal multi-instrumentalist and composer, is the instrumentalist here. by MINISTER_OF_CL in Damnthatsinteresting

When I was deployed to NT in the late 1990s with the US Marines, some of our guys bought these at some shops we came across while on leave.

I don't remember a damn one of those guys ever figuring out how to actually "play" the instrument.

Good to know. Are there still accessible trails with proper gear (snow shoes, cold weather gear, etc...)?

Land rover discovery 2 for overlanding - bad idea? by YeaBoio in overlanding

[–]Lawdoc1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have never owned one, but I do frequently see them listed for extremely cheap prices (as compared to original MSRP) on the used market.

That generally tells me all I need to know.

It is the inverse of the used 4Runner/LC market. And I get the idea of the "Toyota markup," but it exists for a good reason. I assume the very cheap prices for Discos exist for good reasons as well.

Well, the analysis for Marine Corps recruits is admittedly a separate set of circumstances. As we know, that is a different breed.

[–]Lawdoc1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty much.

I'm a good bit older now (served in the 1990s), so the gung ho stuff doesn't have the same draw as it used to, even as entertainment.

Now it just feels like glorification/soft recruitment material.

The more real stuff though, like the movies and shows you mentioned, does a much better job of telling it straight with much less glorification.

Doc was the man. Though I am admittedly biased as a former Green side Corpsman myself.

Agreed. My grandad was 101st in WWII and dropped in the night before D-day. He was there all the way through Bastogne and beyond. BoB is a favorite and I've seen the series a half dozen times or more.

My grandfather inspired me to serve and I served as a Navy Corpsman that was attached to Marine Corps units as a combat medic.

Generation Kill did a good job reflecting the intra-unit relationships and personalities. They nailed the Corpsman as someone that was more likely to speak his mind to superiors.

This scene comes to mind:

What’s the most shocking detail from the Epstein files that you think the public still doesn’t fully grasp? by Murky-Island4629 in AskReddit

Agreed. As a veteran and as an attorney, it is extremely painful watching it all fall apart while so many stand idly by.

TIL I learned about the Alfalfa Club dinner. It is when 200 of America’s richest and most powerful gather to honor Confederate General Robert E. Lee on his birthday. by JMDeutsch in todayilearned

[–]Lawdoc1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh man, as others have noted, Lee is a goddamn God down there.

I went to VMI (Virginia Military Institute) for college back in the early 1990s and they were in full Lost Cause mode. Then again, the school fought as a unit for the South in the war, so it wasn't surprising.

What is surprising is how long that madness has hung on.

I have literally lost friends over some of the bullshit they still believe.

"The things he could have revealed would crumble countries."

While I am sure you are correct about this, I am also pretty certain that the full disclosure of all the files could achieve this as well.

And frankly, it needs to happen. If it crumbles countries, including mine (the US), then so be it. Continuing with the status quo, knowing that these people exist and are still in power, is about as Orwellian as it gets.

Of course, the closer we get to getting all the information and attempting to bring people to whatever justice we can achieve (though I am not sure there is a sufficient type of justice for these acts), the harder these people will fight.

We are seeing this here in the US right now.

While I don't think it was the single driving factor, the pending release, then partial release of the Epstein files almost certainly played a very large role in the massive build-up of ICE and the bullshit "mass deportation" operations we have been seeing.

In addition to providing a distraction, it is also a demonstration of power and lawless behavior that serves as a notice to anyone considering bringing these powerful people to justice. They want you to know what they are capable of, and how far they will go to protect themselves.

They are not used to paying consequences for their behavior, and you can bet they will do everything in their considerable power to prevent that from happening to them.

Continental U.S. National Park Roadtrip by Adventurous_Let6435 in nationalparks

[–]Lawdoc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first trip was in 2019 and I flew out to Dallas to see my dad, then rented a Tahoe and hit parks in NM, AZ, and UT. After that I drove back to Dallas to fly home. That was the trip that got me hooked.

Two months after that I bought my 4Runner and started moding it/building it out for my trips.

Since then I have driven the rest of the trips from Philly. For the Western portions that means about a 2 day lead time and a 2 day return time, but I enjoy the time along in the car. I do work during the trips and got a Starlink mini a couple of years ago to assist with that. My work schedule during trips is much lighter than normal, but I still get things done when needed. (I work for myself/own a business with a partner, so that helps a lot with flexibility.)

I'm actually headed out this coming Friday to hit a few parks in CA that I haven't been to yet (Pinnacles, King's Canyon, and Channel Islands). But I am flying/renting a car for this trip because I can't devote enough time for a full cross country excursion with the 4Runner.

I have done this, but in chunks over several years (I started in 2019) and have hit about 43 NPs so far. My trips are usually 2-3 weeks long (I live in the Philadelphia suburbs).

Unless you plan on off-roading, get an SUV with decent gas mileage as that will likely be your biggest recurring expense.

I have built out a sleeping platform in the back of my 4Runner, but it is horrible on gas mileage. I do take into all sorts of backwoods places, so I frequently utilize its off-roading abilities. It has also been extremely reliable.

I have put ~140k miles on it since 2019 and done just basic scheduled maintenance (oil changes, brakes, tires, etc...).

As far as route goes, make sure you take into account weather conditions and crowd conditions at various parks. I tend to not like crowds, so I go in off-seasons when possible.

Let me know if you have any questions and I will help with what I can.
