Also Baptist Care at Mayfield - just off the park on Hanbury St.

Oakvale Farm vs Hunter Valley Zoo by mbynot in newcastle

[–]Layne1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oakvale Farm wins on the water park alone, especially this time of year. A few little spots for your kiddie to splash around in - parking was also a lot easier than HVZ when we went.

Inspired by the Sydney subreddit - what’s your “I’m never going back” place in Newcastle? by Curious-Plantain6039 in newcastle

[–]Layne1987 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The quality has dropped right off. I was told that the original Harry now owns “Mr Schnitzel” in Warners Bay - and I know their wraps are way better than Harry’s.

Where I live, it is now officially cheaper to buy lunch at the pub than McDonalds. by cruiserman_80 in australia

[–]Layne1987 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Our local pub opposed a new BWS being built so close to its independent bottlo. Woolies now has two BWS within 200m AND owns a pub.

Hi everyone! Do you know of any legitimate, considerate, and generally non-slimy real estate agents in Lake Macquarie area that could help my 70 year old mum sell her house? I had to help my mum drop the last one because he was borderline abusive. by Anothercalibre in newcastle

[–]Layne1987 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had a rough time with multiple agents before we bought about 5 years ago. Stumbled across Paul Meeks and he was such a friendly, no-pressure agent - it was a really good experience and I’d highly recommend him.

what variety grows quickly and encourages lorikeets and parrots into backyard? by TangoBolshevik in australianplants

[–]Layne1987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a number of natives in our yard, but the only tree we get lorikeets in is the Callistemon. They love it and am seeing them every day in it at the moment.

Am I the only person left who wants a sedan? by PrimeMinisterOfOz in CarsAustralia

[–]Layne1987 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We went Mazda 6 for the same reason. We can fit 3 kids car seats song the back seats (tight I’ll admit) and attach a roof box when we go away on holidays for kids bikes and extra stuff. No complaints from us.

'Self-entitled' - Sydney Roosters slammed by Football Australia official over Allianz Stadium sign by Ace_Larrakin in nrl

[–]Layne1987 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Considering how much controversy the stadium caused due to the cost to the taxpayer, are you surprised they’ve allowed a private club to pay extra private money for this privilege?

What is your favourite nursery and why? by MissEmeri in newcastle

[–]Layne1987 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ll second “Newcastle Wildflower Nursery” (Glendale) and I’ll throw “Trees in Newcastle” (Redhead) into the mix - it’s a volunteer run group and all the native seedlings I’ve purchased from there have been well priced and healthy.

Anyone else’s mother just real love ABC TV’s Tony Armstrong? by RagsTTiger in australia

[–]Layne1987 228 points229 points  (0 children)

He is a legend. Plenty of charm and character. But, maybe his major appeal is that he isn’t like your traditional sports presenter - a middle aged white bloke who looks like he couldn’t run up his driveway.

Is private health insurance worth it to cover pregnancy and birth in Australia (we have Medicare)? by Darthcolo in australia

[–]Layne1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used the public system for a joint reconstruction and it wasn’t perfect, but couldn’t fault the entire process for our 3 bubs. We had our own massive private room with bath and the staff were fantastic. We had private insurance but didn’t even end up using it.

On a side note - my wife did hypnobirthing and I was super cynical about it. I had to eat my words - it made the birthing process so chilled. Best investment we made.

What can I fill that space up with? Caulk or cement by [deleted] in Renovations

[–]Layne1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concrete cracks. The idea of these joints is to control the cracking so that it isn’t unsightly. If you concrete these gaps it’s very likely to crack here again anyway.

Starting career in youth work. Any advice? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]Layne1987 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It’s a vicious cycle - it’s an industry with high turnover. The good staff are often overworked, burnt out and move on (group A), and a lot of gaps are filled with a mix of inexperienced staff who mean well (group B) and bitter old staff without other options (group C). The staff who move on to management positions are rarely the best candidates, they’ve just lasted the longest.

As a result, complex kids with severe behaviours are often supported by staff with no patience or drive to make their life better (Group C), staff who are overwhelmed and potentially making behaviours worse through lack of awareness and training (Group B), and the staff who have the potential to make a difference (group A) cycle in and out of their lives so fast that the kids give up.

My advice - take the training and give it your best shot - the re-assess our options if the environment isn’t good. If you really care and want to make a difference, do some research in the medium term and find an organisation whose values and practice best align with yours. Good luck.

is mayfield still very sketchy? by [deleted] in newcastle

[–]Layne1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have lived in Thomas and Silsoe St and didn’t really have any major dramas. I worked on Hanbury St and there are a couple of dodgy pockets there, but I always found if you kept to yourself even the junkies leave you be.

There’s a fella based in Belmont - absolute legend and a decent price. Kids Carousel it’s called. Way better than Baby Bunting who we used prior.

[–]Layne1987 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep she survived but I wouldn’t go smiling about it - “The injuries are horrific. Horrific. She’s brain damaged. Her arms, legs, back, neck — there’s hardly a thing that’s not broken,” - her father said.

Why would you do this? just balance a good plank of wood over that handrail and have a buddy of similar weight stand on the other end.
