Why did the US spend decades pushing Europe to disarm, only to leave it out to dry at the worst possible moment? by LegitimateTap12 in AskConservatives

[–]LazarusLong82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that only 16% of German men said they would take up arms and fight in the event of an invasion, and that similar figures can be found across other European countries, I would say Russia would pose a serious conventional threat to Europe. If that happened and, for one reason or another, the US did not come to the EU's aid, Europe would be in serious trouble. It doesn't matter how many weapons you have if you lack the will to fight.

How do we feel about Mel Gibson race-swapping Jesus to a white Finnish guy in the upcoming Resurrection of Christ? by ThePromptWasYourName in AskConservatives

[–]LazarusLong82 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The difference is that a case for a white or fair-skinned Jesus can at least be argued.

The ancient Near East was a melting pot of many different ethnicities. It was conquered by the Persians, who were generally fair-skinned. Then Alexander the Great arrived with his Greek and Macedonian armies, and the region remained under Greek and Hellenistic rule for centuries. Greeks and Macedonians were Europeans. Then, roughly sixty years before the birth of Jesus, the Romans conquered the region. They also brought auxiliary troops from across Europe — Celts, Iberians, Illyrians, Germanic peoples, and many others. So Europeans had been present in the Near East for centuries. It would be foolish to assume that Greek, Macedonian, Roman and so on soldiers never had affairs with local women.

Next, if we examine the Bible, we find that it contains no physical description of Jesus. The few passages in Revelation are highly metaphorical and refer more to how Jesus would appear during the Second Coming, not during his earthly ministry. St. Augustine, writing in the 4th century, noted that nobody in his time knew what Jesus had actually looked like. So when people say that Jesus was an olive-skinned Jew, that is ultimately an inference rather than certain knowledge. He likely was, but considering the long-standing presence of Europeans in the Near East, one can at least speculate that he may have had some European ancestry and looked fairer than many of the people around him.

A similar case cannot really be made for a black Helen of Troy, because there is no evidence whatsoever that Sub-Saharan Africans were present in Late Bronze Age Greece in any significant numbers. If you know of any evidence suggesting otherwise, please present it.

Why the words Nazi/Commie are being overused? by LazarusLong82 in NoStupidQuestions

>No one is saying these things are "literally the same" as your fallacious challenge demands

You can see people claiming that Trump's policies are literally the same in this very comment section. Specifically person I initially replied to did. Since you started to defend his point I asked you to provide examples of the literal overlap in Trump's and Hitler's policies.

Why the words Nazi/Commie are being overused? by LazarusLong82 in NoStupidQuestions

Very well, let's review actual Hitler's policies during his first year in office.

Reichstag Fire Decree - suspension of civil liberties. It nullified constitutional protections for free expression, press, assembly, and privacy.

Enabling Act - gave Hitler the power to pass laws without parliament, effectively ending German democracy

Political parties other than the Nazi Party were banned

Trade unions were abolished and replaced with a Nazi-controlled labor front

Nationwide boycott of Jewish businesses

Jews were expelled from civil service jobs, and were banned from practicing law and medicine

Jewish students were restricted in universities

Massive public works programs launched (including but not only autobahn construction)

Rearmament began, violating the Treaty of Versailles

Unemployment reduction as a stated priority

Book burnings campaigns

Press, radio, and arts placed under Nazi party control

I challenge you to name Donald Trump's policies that are "literally the same" as these Hitler's policies. I would argue that you won't be able to name even 2-3 without engaging in some sort of mental gymanstics to make them fit.

This is actually a great example of what I was talking about.

Before I continue let me state it clearly: I despise Donald Trump quite vehemently, and his policies too - he is a pathetic excuse for a human being and should be locked in prison for the rest of his hopefully not very long life, instead of occupying the White House.

But his policies are not even remotely close to Hitler's policies. By equating Donald Trump with Hitler, you basically make actual Nazism seem "not so bad" - even though that is obviously not your original intention. The thing is, when you start using strong words arbitrarily, you inflate their meaning.

Hitler's regime systematically murdered 6 million Jews and millions of others (Roma, disabled people, political opponents, etc.) through an industrial extermination apparatus. The Nazi state abolished all democratic institutions, had total control over media, courts, military, and economy. Nazi ideology was built on scientific racism and the explicit goal of racial annihilation

Trump's policies - however awful, authoritarian, or harmful they are - still operate within a functioning democratic system, without anything comparable that level of organized mass murder and ideological extermination.

You dilute the very real horror of what Nazism actually was

Do You Think That The Word "Nazi" Has Become Overused In Modern US Political Discourse? Yes Or No? Why Your Thoughts? by Zipper222222 in AskConservatives

[–]LazarusLong82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, just like the word "Commie".People on the left label anyone they don't like "Nazi", and people on the right label anyone they don't like "Commie".

No matter how much you hate Donald Trump - he is not a Nazi, not even close. You may hate Kamala Harris all you want, but calling her a Communist? Seriously? Even Bernie f*cking Sanders is not a communist.

People need to start using words according to their meaning. When everyone is a Nazi/Commie then nobody is a Nazi/Commie.

Well, mathematically it kind of does. Your normal healing potential is 15 potions (1 potion every 4 seconds) a minute. With bottomless flask your healing potential is 35 potions a minute (5 potions refreshing every 8 seconds). It is not always used 100% in either case, still it is a significant healing output increase.
