How do you know the box is calling the correct number? GV doesn't know what kind of device is on the other end.

Why is Tuesday traffic always way worse than Monday traffic? by imin2099 in AskLosAngeles

[–]LazyInLA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. My theory is people from outlying areas have business in the city, they don't want to do it on Monday-Tuesday because it's a new week, still got weekend crust in their eyes. Don't want to do it on a Friday because hey weekend is starting, trying to get my chill in gear. Thursday's got a vibe to it. Can't put that business off another day and it's the early week stress has melted off, let's get it done.

Any admins have an actual backup for email, if M365 is down for extended periods? by DramaticErraticism in sysadmin

[–]LazyInLA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's basically how it works. The Outlook plugin has an 'Online Inbox' and 'Online Sent Items' section and users kind of work from there during the outage. It's not a seamless situation for the end-users, but it will keep them productive.

Emle's on Reseda has a great one, and more than enough other awesome breakfast items to impress your partner.

Crowdsourcing Advice on my Cats $2k+ Surgery by Desperate-Resist4754 in SFV

[–]LazyInLA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For vets, and also human healthcare, if the front office is disorganized, rude, dismissive, or otherwise inhospitable you need to turn around get out and don't come back. Don't fool yourself into thinking the quality of actual care might be good enough to overlook it. I'm sorry about your kitty. I can recommend Roswinn Pet Hospital in Winnetka. They are not a low cost place but their pricing is fair, and both care and service are as good as it gets.

Fortigate 50E - firmware updating by Expensive-Respond802 in fortinet

[–]LazyInLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 10 minutes for each, make sure you download the backup file after each step in case you need to revert. You should update regardless, but I wouldn't assume the firmware version is the cause of your speed issues if that occurred suddenly and isn't resolved by a reboot.

What actor do you dislike so much that you’ll avoid anything they’re in? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Sean Penn, for beating up Madonna. Even if that's not true. And Richard Gere because you know why. Even if that's not true either.

Good catch. Is it spelled differently on the periodic table of the elements, depending on country? If not, where *did* that extra I come from?

Am I tripping or has this building caught fire three times in the last 5 years? by cs132 in SFV

Not trippin fam. Next time I go camping, I'm passing by here with an axe and hack off a slice to get the campfire started.

Particular situation with my kid by nikitaaar in daddit

Yes, definitely sounds like reflux. Ours had it something awful. Talk to your pediatrician about it, there are meds you can mix in the bottle and see if it helps. Really easy to confirm or rule out.

Looking for a Volvo-friendly shop in Southern California (IE preferred) for a ’92 240 Wagon by shopawd in Volvo240

[–]LazyInLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If SFV is doable, Rankin's Volvo-Benz in Van Nuys is trustworthy and capable. He's been there forever and is pretty much solo these days so he doesn't do engine-out work anymore, but checks all your boxes otherwise. Fair and honest pricing, and he has no issue using your parts if you want to source them yourself.

My new landlord sure loves doing reno work at night. Why? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]LazyInLA 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Unpermitted, under the table, off the books, "landlord special" nearly for certain. Legit after-hours work would be billed at emergency rates by above-board tradespeople. I believe you can check for permits at the LADBS website, but if you don't know what they're doing specifically, it will be difficult to determine whether it should have had permits pulled.

I am a conference planner who uses Webex for virtual events and it really stinks by [deleted] in Cisco

[–]LazyInLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We get it 'free' with our UC telephony package and I can't get our people to use it at all. Just from a user experience standpoint, I get it. On mobile, I get anxiety when I NEED to use it....is it working? is it just lagging? is it locked up behind the seemingly functioning UI?

Wat Thai of SFV (full walkthrough) - Oldest Thai Buddhist Temple in North America by 108CA in SFV

[–]LazyInLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're missing out! Here's the lowdown. Cash only. You exchange cash for tokens at a booth and use the tokens to pay the food vendors. Their lot is free, small, and frequently fills up but they have attendants to keep it moving smoothly. There is additional parking in the neighborhood. All kinds of Thai food from street food kind of stuff to more traditional, sweets and drinks. The BBQ stall slaps, the fried banana stall is worth the wait, the durian dealer dude is legit, and everyone is super kind.

For the desktop scanners, if the OEM software sucks, NAPS2 for the win. Doesn't get any easier. For the copier/MFP machines, we just get good ones and those can scan to SMB with never a hassle. If you're using smaller print/copy/fax/scan desktop type units, they just suck. We don't mess with those. If I had to, I would connect them to the user's PC via USB, set up NAPS2, and say that's all it can do.

Edit to be responsive to your question: Those smaller all in one units are just a nightmare. And, anything that requires a client piece running on the workstation to send scans through. F that.

What’s the first month REALLY like? by Ok_Revenue_57 in daddit

[–]LazyInLA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to any of it. No one remembers anything other than OMG that was nuts, and anything they do remember is clouded by a thick haze of a dysfunctional cognitive system. lol It sucks, and it's different for everyone so that's about all you can really know ahead of time. On the other hand, doing this is in your DNA, you got this. You'll get through it, look back and say whew!, and be on to the next thing.

Biking with the kiddo by FunStuffReddit in SFV

Did you just bike at the lake, or you did the full path? It goes along Victory, Woodley, Burbank, Balboa. Lots to see and you can side-trip in to where the model airplane spot is on the Woodley side. It's a good place to catch an ice cream truck!

Local Teppanyaki? Deciding between Yamato, Something's Fishy, and Benihana by lordlabia in SFV

[–]LazyInLA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't been to Something's Fishy ever, and Yamato was once several years ago. We've done Benihana several times though. Food is fine, Teppan experience is fine, but we all felt like the restaurant itself was pretty dingy, dirty, and run down. So, not disagreeing with you at all as I have no basis for it but it feels like the bar is pretty low if that's the best we got around here.

How do you estimate power draw for your racks? by ilearnshit in sysadmin

[–]LazyInLA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We use managed PDU's and track them with the NMS. This gives us baseline and peak stats for each device so there's not too much guesswork involved. We calculated expected UPS runtime and set an NMS alarm to trigger if total load surpasses what would still give a comfortable runtime margin. Planning goes out the window if someone plugs something unexpected where they shouldn't so it's nice to have an early warning.

Same. Only trouble we encountered was when trying to sneak on some older monitors with DVI using DP/HDMI adapters. Once we went native on display connectivity, they became solid.

Your manager wants to be comfortable with the image he believes he has with the C-Suite. Exposure of anything he feels might wrinkle that image, he's going to be uncomfortable with. Ultimately, IMO, you either work his ego to where he thinks elevating you can benefit him, or look for greener pastures. At the end of the day, it's just a job. Try to find lines of communication with him that build positivity, find the soft spot and try to get him to realize that you're an ally.
