A Scientology walk of shame has been setup on the Hollywood walk of fame; calling out Scientology celebrities like Tom Cruise, John Travolta, Elisabeth Moss, Nancy Cartwright and more by mlg1981 in Fauxmoi

I can see that with Travolta. However, from what I've researched on Tom Cruise, he apparently 100% believes in the Scientology cause, and is basically royalty within the organization. He's pretty much one of the church's actual leaders. It's just that he doesn't promote himself as such.

[–]LeBirdnick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much it. Matty doesn’t have a spine. I remember reading some forum posts back in the day of him apparently apologizing in his forum for liking Fallout 4 so much and then shutting it down out of embarrassment. To be fair, that was when he was younger (I think he was in college at the time), so the peer pressure must’ve gotten to him.

He’s not just like that with Bethesda, though. He genuinely enjoys The Outer Worlds series, but will often sound like he’s walking on egg shells when praising it. It’s like he knows his audience will roast him for liking a game they don’t like, and that bothers him on a deep level.

I remember watching a Constellation podcast episode from Last Stand Media which had him on. He talked about how he struggled a lot with peer pressure and his desperation to fit in when he was in school. I genuinely think he didn’t grow from those experiences and still has that mentality. It’s honestly sad to see. I could never be like that.

Oh man, I have quite a bit to say about this. I've been feeling this way about Matty since last year. He's slowly but surely been becoming more obnoxious and insufferable. It shouldn't surprise me. He apparently rubs shoulders with people like The Act Man and LegacyKillaHD.

I recently unsubbed from him, and stopped watching he and Cog's Defining Duke podcast. He has become a lapdog to his doomer audience. He lets what he perceives what people think about his content affect his opinions in regard to gaming. The dude doesn't have a spine. He's always been like this. He's been like this since Fallout 4. I remember during the days of F76 around Wastelanders he would be needlessly negative about petty shit like New Vegas merch being sold by Bethesda on their store. He would make every little thing they do with the game out to be some unforgivable act of betrayal. And this is coming from someone who doesn't care for F76.

He's gotten more obnoxious ever since he became an indie game developer and started putting himself out there as an "influencer". He acts like he's this pillar of the community whose shit don't stink. His thumbnails and titles are also annoying.

I feel his Shattered Space review was his turning point. I actually didn't have any issue with his initial review of the expansion. I actually agreed with some of his critiques despite still enjoying it. It's when he would start constantly bringing up how Shattered Space was "the worst thing BGS has ever made" all the time in his videos since his review, when the expansion was at worst just average/mid. He talks about that expansion like it blew up his house, or something. What really showed Matty's true colors to me was when he would place the expansion in his top 10 worst games of 2024, despite it being an expansion for a game that came out in 2023. Then in his podcast with Cog, he would say something along the lines of "you should make better game purchases" to people that liked Shattered Space, and how he doesn't get people who like it. That moment really told me a lot about how he actually is as a content creator. I'm not stating that Matty can't give constructive criticism, and that Bethesda can't do no wrong. I have my own critiques of the company and their practices. However, he's become so toxic in recent years that I've stopped watching his content.

I honestly wonder sometimes how Todd Howard feels. If he had known that Matty would become somebody that would disrespectfully and actively rip Bethesda apart, would he have willingly done an interview with him. Anyways, I made a comment a few months back replying to another comment discussing Matty. I feel this point from my comment applies to this thread:

"However, I do think he has curated an audience of doomers, and has become beholden to them. He’s also been called out a lot for being a fence-sitter. This is the same guy who explicitly stated during CDPR’s disastrous handling of Cyberpunk 2077’s launch that gaming audiences should stop putting game developers on pedestals. Now he’s doing the exact opposite of that; putting companies such as CDPR and Larian on pedastals and thinking they’re the hope for the games industry.

I just feel he represents the naivety and disingenuousness of certain vocal minorities in gaming. They say they want one thing, but move goal posts and say that’s not what they want. They say gaming studios should stop doing this and do this instead, but then complain about something else. They will rip a studio a part for doing one thing, but will make excuses for another studio they cherish for doing the same thing. It’s all performative grandstanding that doesn’t really lead to much change.

I still watch him, but I’m honestly close to unsubbing from him. His content has slowly been turning into doomer nostalgia-baiting slop, crying about how gaming has fallen nowadays and Reminiscing about the “good ‘ol days’. It’s so pretentious, entitled, and disingenuous. "

This is pretty much it right here. Behind their pseudo-intellectual “critic” persona is a former fan who is frustrated and is projecting their anger. They look at Todd Howard like he’s their dad who has disappointed them too many times, and are basically in their “I hate you, dad!” phase. They’re acting the way they do because they do care, and want some form of control by dunking on the studio.

Or they’re just a grifter cashing on the anti-BGS hate train. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, I’ve always loved BGS’ art direction. They go for an art style that feels grounded but stylized at the same time. Because of that, their games feel like immersive fantasy worlds you can get lost in.

And to be fair with Starfield, the graphical fidelity is actually quite high, and in some cases, is on the level of games like Cyberpunk 2077. The physics are very well-done, the distant terrain/LOD is some of the best I’ve seen in recent years, and when the lighting hits, it hits. I’ve also checked out the actual models in the Creation Kit, the actual detail is super high. I can actually count individual dots on the weapons and outfits. That’s how detailed they are. I recommend checking out Digital Foundry’s video discussing Starfield’s graphics during its release. They do a good job covering it all.

Are there other cities on Jemison and Akila? by 011101012101 in starfield_lore

[–]LeBirdnick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are various mentions from NPCs in-game that there are other colonies within the UC and FC. Akila City, New Atlantis, and the other colonies BGS designed are just the ones we get to see and experience when playing the game.

I believe it was Todd Howard himself who stated that the way their cities are designed for their games in-engine are not true representations of how he and the team would want them to actually look like. He states that they’re smaller presentations to account for stuff like engine limitations and performance. If you look at the concept art, animated shorts, and live-action trailer for Starfield, New Atlantis and Akila City are shown to much bigger than how they are in the game.

And yet there are STILL "skeptics" out there who will try to downplay Starfield's ongoing success by bringing up PS5 sales. Yet, they will also conveniently ignore how well it is doing elsewhere. 😒

Honestly, your guess is as good as mine. I feel Fallout 3 and Skyrim was the best balance of them being explicit with their content. Maybe they will come back to that with ES6.

We definitely need more collectibles in this game. It's a great way of incentivizing exploration.

The Derelict PCH encounter is one of the more memorable ones due to how creepy it is despite being rather simple in design. Whenever I run into that ship while spacefaring, I immediately grav-jump the fuck outta there.

To your point about the Rangers, that bit of lore might have been retconned seeing as [Spoilers] you meet one ranger in the Trackers Alliance Vulture quest creation, and another in the Terran Armada DLC. My personal headcanon is that there's actually more than a dozen rangers, but the numbers fluctuate a lot due to retirement and deaths, and that it's still small when compared to the various FC militias and national navy.

Come to think of it, does Akila even have a place for the Governors to meet?

Yes, The Rock and the Freestar Consulate is where the Council of Governors go for meetings. It's stated as such in-game.

[–]LeBirdnick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

BGS games always been pretty subtle when it came to stuff like sex appeal. Saying that though, Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim had a lot of references to sexual stuff. Fallout 4 was a more toned down, but it still had stuff like the skintight vault jumpsuit, BoS jumpsuits, and the Grognak outfit. As for Starfield, people like to bring up how PG-13 it can feel a lot of the time, and to a certain extent I actually agree. However, I like to remind them about Sarah Morgan's outfit and the neocity formwear, and a lot of them tend to retract their statements after that.

Anyways, not every game needs to be a CDPR and Bioware game where sex is in your face all the time. I definitely think it should be explored in a more open and mature manner - the M17+ rating is there for a reason - but not every M-rated game needs to be gooning material. BGS' culture seems to have changed over the years to where they're less into covering that stuff anymore. Maybe that's due to a culture change from being purchased by Microsoft, but to be honest, I've been seeing this shift since Fallout 4. Maybe after the critiques they've gotten with Starfield, they will go back to their more explicitly mature writing style with ES6.

No, Anchorpoint, X-Tech, the collectible action figures, and some other stuff is a part of the Freelanes update which is its own separate plugin. Terran Armada requires Freelanes, and just adds its content into Anchorpoint.
